I enjoy dealing with Stephen. Long week and even though I shouldn't have, I snagged the Shag from him. He's easy to deal with, and has been before.
For y'all complaining that this is on the front page, why do you insist on clicking the thread title and commenting? It's on the front page because it's an ongoing adventure, not a sales thread. Are transactions taking place? Yes. But it's fun to watch what he's able to turn stuff into. If you don't like the thread, don't comment. Hell, don't even read it. Quit poking little holes in this guy's fun. Good luck Stephen! |

As "men", a lot of you guys are really embarrassing and act like high school girls. Seriously. Just don't click on the f'n page; it's that simple! Even if I had no transactions with him, I'd still like to see how this pans out. Some of you complain about everything! |
Bunch of grumpy old dudes discouraging millenials from doing something challenging and creative haha what's new. As many others have stated, how hard is to scroll past one thread out of dozens on the front page? There are plenty of unfunny, random and pointless threads started by some people that have nothing to do with vintage cards. To me this is a fun ongoing thread and it'll be interesting to see how far he gets. Keep it up Stephen, thanks again for the Jackie

I personally check this thread everyday or so. A little because it’s interesting to read the comments about this thread is terrible and he’s trying to rip people off. Well the real sellers trying to rip people off are eBay fixed price listing.…right?
Mostly I try to see if he has something I REALLY want were I’m willing to pay a bit more. He’s collecting and trading for a certain goal and seems willing to work with people. Remember those words “collecting and trading.” Something we all grew up doing long before eBay. The only thing I can grip about this thread is the cards offered are mostly small cards, except Ruth & Johnson. Remember, if you’re wanting a decent ’52 Mantle, go big are go home! |

Remember, if you’re wanting a decent ’52 Mantle, go big are go home![/QUOTE] I think this is an interesting point. I think there would be a lot more interest, and far fewer detractors, if one nice card was flipped for a slightly nicer card, which is turned into a slightly bigger card, etc. I would be fascinated by that. The current path is that a big card is flipped for multiple low grade commons, which are traded for similar cards or offered up in a fire sale, etc. I personally find the path hard to follow. But maybe that's the only feasible way to achieve the goal. I think it would be awesome if the OP could achieve this, but I understand those who think that watching the journey might be a bit cumbersome. |

After all this, what is left to flip?
I agree that trading one for one would be easier to follow, and likely make a more interesting read. But perhaps I am a just another grumpy old guy who can only track one thing at a time. In any case, as someone that does not own a '52 Topps Mantle, I watch with intrigue as to whether he can do it, and a touch of envy if he does achieve his goal. One thing for sure, I won't be around in 2071 if that ends up being the final date. |

I'm a grumpy old man- well, only 64 but unquestionably grouchy, but I do have a couple of observations to share.
I don't know Stephen but he seems like a genuinely good guy and I appreciate his enthusiasm for the hobby. But I'm not sure he's getting any closer to his goal. He trades commons for HOfers, then trades HOFers for more commons, and I don't know if that will ever get him a 52 Mantle. Plus, with the price of the card increasing dramatically, I don't even think he is keeping up with inflation. For every $100 score he makes, the 52 Mantle becomes $200 more expensive. Also, why is this on the main page? At the end of the day, Stephen is just a guy trying to add a great card to his collection. Isn't that what everyone is trying to do? If I'm saving up to buy a Wagner, but need to sell a lot of cards to afford it, can I do so on the main page? Seems like this is a BST issue. Anyway, sorry to be so grumpy. Just my three cents. |
Hey Barry,
You misspelled (typo) enthusiasm. :) The questions you raise were answered long ago in this thread. It is on the front page because the original poster (hey Stephen) asked if it could be and was told it was ok. It is a vintage card experiment that has some entertainment value. It is one thread on the front page out of 35. There is no harm in it and most likely other threads like it wouldn't be allowed again, at least very soon. It's baseball cards....We should be happy for Stephen to give it a try (hey Stephen) even though I have to agree, he has a big time uphill battle. I still think he ends up with some '87 Donruss... Thanks. I fixed it.:p
With all due respect, I've collected on and off for 35 years, and my goal was ALWAYS to trade up- tried to trade something smaller for something better. It's fine that you gave Stephen this forum, but what he is doing really isn't that unique. Again, wish him well and hope he achieves his goal. |

Now we have perhaps the far majority of the Net54 constituency chasing this thread of a train wreck, at one time or another.;) In some respects, it seems like an imaginary giant hamster wheel. Whatever. The constituency are sure running with this one. Not stepping on anyones' toes, as I am only a bemused, or is it bewildered observer. Yup, Peter. Our fellow collectors love to gawk at train wrecks. I do sincerely hope he pulls it off, and not wind up as the good train wreck in the fine old movie, "MAN'S FAVORITE SPORT". In fact, I truly hope he tenaciously keeps trading up and winds with a better '52 Topps Mick than even he, or anyone else for that matter, thought he would. Keep at it, buddy, I'm pulling for you! ---Brian Powell |
I've said it before. So have others. If you want to do a trade up, trade a card for a card. Then trade for another card. This whole idea that I trade you a card for a handful of cards that I then try to pump for the next week to get money ... just dumb...... makes it 1000 times more complicated.
But maybe I'm just a stodgy octogenarian who doesn't appreciate the genius of millennials and all their wacky fun. Like grapefruit flavored beers and kale shakes. |

I'll have to agree with some other guys that $15 cards, or even $50 cards for that matter, regardless of how many, ain't gonna get you there. You're going to bleed out on shipping costs alone. I'd think that you need to be dealing in high three, if not four figure cards to make any progress. It may take longer to move them, but I'd think you'd need to be focusing on margin and not volume. Otherwise, for every step forward you take, the Mantle gets 2 steps farther away. I'm hoping you can plug the whole in the hull, but right now you're taking on water. Good luck!

With these last 3 T-206s still outstanding his status on the front page is currently a cash balance of $1037.10 So he's + $613 at about 2 months in at this point, so he's still making progress. |

Though most of the fun of this thread has been successfully sucked out of it by the same few people who continue to inject withering (some might say "tiresome") sarcasm, I did want to make one comment regarding the last few points made. Certainly valid that Stephen is trading for lots of smaller parts at the moment, but I had the notion that he eventually might achieve escape velocity once he has a few grand to play with. A bigger item or two might be got (think the Sports Kings Ruth he had, but on a larger scale) and then traded/sold up for pricier items. Sort of like boiling water. It takes awhile to really get going, but eventually he'll hopefully get really cooking.
Anyway - I think the comparisons to Adrian are unfair and Stephen is by all accounts having fun and enjoying the hobby with vintage material, by and large. I guess we're past the point of "if you don't like the thread, don't click on it and certainly don't keep bumping it." Just my two cents. |
I have a different view. I think most in the thread are having fun with it. I know my comments recently are only for fun. I think it's a great thread so far. The scrooges don't need to click on it. It could, in the future, get long in the tooth and if it does it can be moved. And as fair warning if too many people try to derail it, in this thread, their posts might be removed as to not completely take it off course. None have been and hopefully none will need to be. But this is a fair warning so no one gets any crazy ideas.
This isn't National Security or cemented in stone stuff.....it is a ONE-OFF thread. To reiterate, others wouldn't be allowed. There isn't anarchy or martial law declared (yet). Not sure if it was said already but Stephen got permission before doing this thread too. So it's really all my fault. :) Quote:

I have received some cool offers on the Cobb, yet nothing that made complete sense from my standpoint, so keep them coming. Let's find this Beauty a new home.

Starting to think the whole strategy here might be to be so supremely annoying that someone just caves and gives you the Mantle to end this and get it off the first page. If that's the actual strategy I'd daresay you are executing it pretty brilliantly.

Also, You know that you don't have to click on the threads right? I didn't know this either at first. You see, there is this thing we use called a mouse... and if you do this thing called "Scrolling Down", your mouse actually won't click on the thread. I know.. Tough concept. I too was having difficulties with it, but after a little practice, I learned how not to click on threads. Let me know how it works out for you. Took me a few days. Let's see how long it takes you. |

Thank you for ALLLLL the offers. I am considering them all tonight, and will make a decision most likely by nights end. If you want to sweeten it up to get a leg up on the competition feel free :D I LOVE the action though guys. Hope you are having as much fun as I am.

Nice looking Red Cobb. Good Luck on the trade up or sale.

Not sure what all the fuss is all about. Love the concept and keep waiting for you to get some things I collect so I can get in on the fun.
Look folks. This is a hobby. No one is getting hurt. Stephen has been clear about his goals from his very first post. There is enough garbage going on in the "real world" that we don't need to bring that stuff in to what I'm thinking most of us consider our safe haven. Cut the guy some slack and remember the old adage...treat others the way you want to be treated. We're all big boys here and we don't have to like each other...but a little respect goes a long way. Good luck to all in their collecting endeavors whatever they may be...M@tt McC@rthy Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Stephen - just some friendly advice, take it for what it's worth. If you really want to reach this goal (and you obviously do a lot of other selling apart from this thread), you should really invest in a scanner with a CCD element, so that your slabbed cards aren't so blurry. It really makes a world of difference, and will help your sales/trades. They're not terribly expensive - you can get a Epson V550 for about $160. Just a thought. I think people will be very hesitant to trade for $1000+ cards when they can't see a good scan.
