Not exactly an advertising piece but tobacco related....

Mint condition humidor presented to GH Stead by the Winnipeg Victorias hockey team 1915. (As stated on the plaque)
Stead was the secretary/treasurer of the Victorias from the early 1900's till, presumably, 1915.
The Winnipeg Victorias won the Stanley Cup in 1896, 1901, 1902.
And the Allan Cup in 1911.

while I have seen 3/4 original Bull Durham cases over 20 years - there are quite a few (many) reproductions out there - they usually show uneven signs of aging and distress for effect - and the image having been taken from an original - looking at the shading in color present in the upper "tab" it's pretty easy to see where the discoloration doesn't match the expected wear from a 100 year old case.

I've noticed the bull durham repro boxes more frequently at flea markets over the past year. I never saw any boxes in 10 years and all of a sudden I've seen a bunch.

Upon closer inspection, you are absolutely right in that it's a reproduction. All of the spots where there are apparent creases, paper loss, or staining are printed on the surface of the box as copied from an image of an authentic specimen.

It does make for a nice display piece though and I only spent $20 for it, so it's not all bad... :o

I've always wondered why no Sports or Non-Sports cards were ever issued with the Chesterfield brand ?

Liggett & Myers introduced this brand in 1912, packaging these cigarettes in the standard pack. What did they use for cigarette pack stiffiners (if not cards) ?

Thanks for the compliment regarding my World Series program(s). I have most of the Yankees World Series programs from 1923 - 1981.
I try to acquire the programs that are scored, as I find them to be more interesting.


Liggett & Myers was given the following Cigarette brands when ATC was divested in May 1911:

Piedmont
Fatima
American Beauty
Home Run
Coupon
King Bee

And as you know, tobacco cards (BB & non-sports) with some of these advertisements (American Beauty, Coupon, Fatima, Piedmont, etc.)
continued to be issued until 1919.

So, I find it quite puzzling that the Chesterfield brand was not printed on tobacco cards shortly after its introduction by L & M in 1912.

Greg sensational TTT pack, wow!! Here's something special. If another one does exist, I've not heard or ever seen it. Original Crackerjack box circa 1914/15 that would have housed a card. With the help of a very knowledgeable Crackerjack collector, we have confirmed that all of the key markings (patent date, trademark, labeling, etc) are all present confirming this time period. Yes, it had been opened prior to purchasing it. :rolleyes: Love this thread!

The amount of "stuff" in this thread is just amazing. Thanks to everyone who has posted their incredible items over the past few years in this thread. Because it has gone on for so long, people like me can go back and look at things over and over again. I still enjoy seeing everything and I notice something new that I didn't previously see each time I go through it.

Today, I was at a local antique mall and saw this piece in a frame and it just stated "tobacco advertisement, $10". I snatched it up, 99% knowing it is authentic and definitely not a reproduction. When I got it home, I took out the back off the frame, and found the back side piece of the box hidden behind the front side...bonus!!! It helped confirm that these are authentic and not just aged to look old. After going through this thread again, I saw that on page 6, Leon has the entire display box in tact. I believe that these come from that same display box. I'm sure they are not anywhere as valuable as Leon's entire, intact box, but they are still pretty neat and are desired as a T206 collectable. Pretty excited about my find. I look all the time in antique malls and garage sales, and every once in a while I hit something really neat related to our hobby. I love the hunt. (Sorry, but somehow my back scans are bigger and better than my front scans)

I had to drop out because it was still too "new" for me and my narrower focus. Only one I had seen before was at Tik's table 7/8 years ago. I tried to snag it for 100.00 and while we were talking - Jr. decided to take it off the table.....
Ted - I have a small collection of single cigarettes from a few major 19th century manufacturers - they all have their brand in the paper. As for your Chesterfield question my initial thought was they did issue branded pinbacks of women but haven't really had time to look or think about it much..........

For all the Cracker Jack enthusiasts here's a couple of ads circa 1910 and 1914.

The first is a patent for their "triple proof package" from the January 1910 Confectioners Journal.

The second is an ad from the January 1914 International Confectioner.

Those are cool Erik. I have seen a CJ package with it advertising a card I believe, but not sure. Your ad says there is a prize in a box but doesn't mention a card. I wonder if anyone has an ad saying there is a card inside a box? Thanks again to everyone for posting their ad related items. Here us a Pinkerton (T5 associated) letter that is turning down some poor quality tobacco.

Leon, the only piece that I know of which advertised BB cards with the CJ box was the original circa 1915 ad that REA sold off years ago. The box itself only had the word "Prize" on it though. Pic from REA below....

How many of you here have heard of the Scotten, Dillon Tobacco Co. ?

It's origins dates back to 1852. This 12" x 4" wrapper (circa 1910) was designed to wrap around a large cut plug of chewing tobacco.

The beautiful lithograph depicts the White Star Line's RMS Oceanic....which was the largest ship in the world (1899-1901); and, the
fore-runner of the Titanic.

actually to the best of my knowledge they issued what are known as "women's heads" pinbacks manufactured by whitehead and hoag to accompany their chesterfield brand circa 1904 - so they were around before the "T" era and beyond. I imagine different strategies were used by the parent company or the principles depending on the region, vision, and cost of sales.

I think the illustrated checklist posters by Allen & Ginter and others, are absolutely superb.

As a pensioner with very little pocket-money these days, and living on the wrong side of the pond, I was wondering if they had ever been reproduced for the 70s/80s/90s poster generation. It would be the only way I would be able to get my grubby little hands on them and drool over them to my hearts content.

Failing that, are they available in a digital format at all.

there are reproductions of at least 5/6 banners (assuming that's what you're talking about - if not my bad). Check eBay for one. There's at least 2 sellers that offer high quality reproductions. I agree that the banners featuring the cards within a set are the pinnacle of the genre......

I can't opine on why they didn't issue cards - but given the distribution date of 1904 - it was an era where cards weren't being manufactured and 5/6 major brands decided to do it as well. Why they subsequently didn't issue cards in the 1910 period like Sweet Caporal and one or two others who previously issued pinbacks did is worthy of further study. Maybe it was inconvenient - not sure where the factory was located and keep in mind that card manufacturing and distribution was expensive (although not as expensive as redemptions). Perhaps they didn't have the machinery that was capable of inserting the cards into the packs. I recently read a fascinating study of the entire process on the web (CRS - think I saved the link but I lost it?) including descriptions and pictures of all the machines and the process. I may have gotten the link from a thread here.

Well, these weekends don't happen very often, but I was lucky enough to purchase two really neat and rare packs.

The first is a beautiful Ramly clam shell. The style is slightly different from the other I own, and the condition is nearly flawless. In total, this makes about 15 Ramly packs that I've personally seen over the years.

The second box below is equally (if not more) exciting. While we've all seen the Kalamazoo Bats counter top displays, which in and of themselves, are incredibly rare, I have never seen - or heard of - a Kalamazoo Bats pack. Well, here is the first. What’s interesting about the sleeve (and it’s missing the inner portion) is that the measurements are almost spot on with the cards. I've spoken to a few others, and we wonder whether these smaller packs were placed inside the large counter top displays (maybe 10, 12, 20, etc smaller packs fit per counter top display). Regardless, I'm very happy to own it.

I would agree the larger paper CIGAR packages likely had an inner sleeve - regardless probably a handful or less exist of either of those packages. Interest level would be quite a bit higher for the kalamazoo although still limited number of interested parties. I'd be very happy to own either one - but nearly as happy just to see one - know I can't have it all. Also an underbidder on the Ramly - I dropped out and figured I'd bid on one of Leon's :-). Having a hard time replacing one I used to have when they meant less to people. O well.....

Henry - I haven't spoken to anyone who has seen the KB type packaging I posted above, but we have seen the larger countertop displays before (as pictured below). The packaging above measures approximately the size of a KB card, while the countertop displays are quite large. We've speculated that maybe the boxes pictures above would have been sold out of the countertop displays below.

just didn't know what you meant by countertop display. Whatever you want to call it - although a slightly later production - I liken the two examples and display to the Virginia Cheroots cigar packs of four - offered in cases/cartons as well as the "countertop" displays with the fold-down panels. No reason they couldn't have been shipped and sold in such a container. Next time I write the esteemed cigar master Tony Hyman I will see what his thoughts are.

I've owned a few unusual Pirate advertising pieces but never even seen the fan before. Quite nice! Fans make for a great display on a shelf or in a cabinet but one needs to be careful as when displayed OPEN and in part depending on where they sit - the fading and dust accumulation over time unequally affects the front/side/back edges of the ridges. In addition keeping it open can affect the structural integrity of the accordion ridging. I've owned 3/4 such fans (yes I repeated the mistake at least three times) and each time sold them after a few months to a year when I realized display wasn't practical or safe. Of course framing comes with it's own problems and great expense.
I'm sure the next time I have an opportunity to get a tobacco advertising folding fan I'll take the plunge again. Most old advertising is about straight lines and I still chase half moons and circles to break up the structural monotony :o

Interesting that you mention to be careful on how to display something such as this due to the delicate nature of the construction. I had plans on framing it along with a Pirates Cigarettes poster which I'd posted in this thread some time back, but doing so would only hurt the structure of the fan itself so for now it sits open at half mast in my display cabinet. Safe and sound! :)
