Pretty impressive for your 5th post ever on this forum!!

rmacpa 06-18-2014 09:06 PM

to those that have sent e-mails in regards to the victor mills postcard, thanks for your inquiries.

in that this postcard represents the earliest jackson related item ever recognized (and likely ever to be recognized) by psa or sgc, i would prefer to retain it at this time. that said, if an offer were to be made that was too good to pass up, i would be foolish not to accept it. absent that, it is not being offered for sale at this time.

Beautiful postcard. What did you have to do to get SGC to authenticate it?

Bicem 06-20-2014 10:06 AM

Guessing nothing, they weren't so crazy strict on player identification back in the day like they are now.

1914 State Champs (possibly Indiana) with Edgar Burch (French Lick Plutos, Indianapolis ABCs) holding the bag. If anyone has any information on any of the other players or this team, please let me know.

Simply stunning. Thank you for sharing. I would love to hear the back story on this pc. Did you find it in a Carolina flea market? Where did it come from?

Congrats on a wonderful team image. Southern teams are hard to find pre 1910. Adding Joe to it, is utterly ridiculous.

Haven't checked-in with this thread in about a week. Thanks for the amazing surprise RMACPA. I was scrolling down and my eye went to Joe Jackson and my jaw dropped. Would have written about nine minutes sooner but was in a catatonic state.

Would love to know anything more you feel like telling about this card. Mainly did you find it in S. carolina area and is there any interesting note if postally used?

Thanks for posting.

(Okay so now it's Christy shaking hands with Rube followed by Joe Jackson Victor Mills. No, no, it's Joe Jackson first THEN I would want the Christy..... sigh.)

Ty and Cy

5 Attachment(s)
Image 1: Game action real photo postcards of Ty Cobb taken by spectators are exceedingly scarce (I know of just one other). Image 2: I don't recall ever seeing a real photo postcard of Cy Young from during his playing days, and this one is noteworthy as it is among his last photos as a major leaguer.

In the first image, Ty Cobb is shown at bat in an outstanding photo snapped by a spectator who wrote on the back of the postcard, "I may not be able to Ty Cobb but I can snap him. Taken at the Wilkes Barre and Detroit game Sunday, Sept. 24-11." Just before the end of the 1911 season, at about the time the Detroit Tigers were eliminated from the pennant race, the Tigers visited Boulevard Park for a game with the home town Wilkes Barre Barons, champions of the New York State League. The Tigers prevailed 3-2, according to a box score of the game. Cobb went 0-3, so this image probably shows him recording an out. His teammate Sam Crawford was 4-4. Behind the plate that day for the Barons (and behind Cobb in this image) was Joe Briger, whose minor league career spanned 1907-1925.

In the second image, Cy Young stands wearing a Boston Braves uniform in 1912. His statistics show his last year as 1911, but he was a member of the 1912 team until he effectively retired after arm trouble prevented him from making his first appearance on May 23 at Pittsburgh. That makes this image among the last taken of him as a major leaguer. The year 1912 can be isolated by the word Boston appearing across the uniform front and an Indian head logo on the left shoulder. The team surrounding him is unidentified. If you have any information on their identity please let me know.

This photo of WaJo dates to the late summer of 1912, when the Senators players wore black arm bands following the death of team co-owner and president Thomas C. Noyes. A 3'+ tall rendition of this photo hung inside Griffith Stadium for many years, and it was auctioned by Legendary in November 2010 - http://www.legendaryauctions.com/Lot...ntoryid=111077

A WaJo fan has written of the back of this PC, "pitched his first World Series game on the below date" - the date this fan wrote, October 3, 1924, is incorrect - WaJo pitched the first game, which took place on October 4th. But, the fan did correctly note that WaJo lost 2 games and won 1 game (the 7th game) of the Series.

Despite its pathetic condition, I really like this PC. Unless my "CRS" memory is failing me again, I have never seen another example of this PC. Has anyone else ever seen one?

You got me this time, never seen it before, great postcard!

Hankphenom 07-09-2014 04:19 PM

I think that might be in Brea, California, in October, 1924. I've seen a picture of Walter and the Babe in front of some chicken wire similar to that in your PC before their exhibition at the Brea Bowl. And he did wear that sweater in 1924. He played in many exhibitions after the 1924 world series, though, and I'm sure that kind of wire was common to local ball parks at that time.

4 Attachment(s)
Thought I'd resuscitate this great thread with some RPPCs from north of the border, the 1908 and 1909 Northwestern League Vancouver Beavers. Included here are team composites, along with individual cards of Northwest/west coast legend Lou Nordyke, and soon-to-be Pittsburgh Pirate Ham Hyatt with his nine bats. Love this card!

Note that the individual RPPCs are the same images used in the team cards (Hyatt, bottom left in 1908 team card, and Nordyke 2nd from right, middle row in the 1908 card, and third from left, middle row in the 1909 team card).

The 1909 Card is also noteworthy due to the presence of Dick Brookins. Many of you know of Jimmy Claxton, perhaps not of Brookins.

Here's a post from Jay Dell-Mah's excellent site which tells his story:

Smoky Joe Wood earned a 34-5 record with a 1.91 era in 1912, the year Underwood & Underwood published this rare postcard. 1920 Naval/Baseball RPPC

3 Attachment(s)
I picked up a nice selection of sports postcards while visiting relatives in Indiana last week. Most of the cards were from the 1940s/50s – baseball ballparks, college football stadiums and some baseball spring training scenes.

One that caught my eye for its military appeal was this 1920 RPPC of what appears to be crewmen from the USS Oklahoma. It has three things that are cool to me – the military, baseball and a dog! I actually noticed the sailors and the “Oklahoma” flag before I saw the baseball players and the dog.

I knew that the Oklahoma was sunk at Pearl Harbor in 1941, but in my research I found that she had escorted President Wilson back-and-forth to France in 1918-19, then spent most of 1920 at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba (maybe where this photo was taken?). She sailed around South America and joined the Pacific Fleet in 1921, 20 years before she was hit in Hawaii.

My grandfather was in the Pacific for WWII and said that baseball games and small tournaments among the troops were common, but this photo looks as if it was from an event that was maybe a little bit more “official?”

Anyway, just wanted to share one of the more interesting items I’ve picked up in recent months.

As always, great stuff seattlerainiers. Great image of "Big Chief" Dick Brookins. My apologies, not strictly baseball, but a strange 1907 leather postcard of my alma mater. Washington State Normal School of Ellensburg (WSNS), now known as Central Washington University. The banner is made of some type of heavy felt, or denim that was once dyed red, but it is seamlessly attached to the leather postcard. I have no idea how this was done.

Nice Dan!! I had never seen an autographed 1923-24 Simmons before! Very, VERY nice! Congrats on a gorgeous card!

Thanks Derek! Whenever I see a signed HOF rookie I have to pick it up.

Yes, it's the one recently sold on ebay. I found another image of one other member of the team. The Capt. Powell.

They appear in the 1920 UNC yearbook of the 1919 baseball team and 12 photos were taken.

That Seamless Steel Ty Cobb is my favorite postcard of all time. Something about the pose just perfectly represents everything Cobb was. Amazing PC!!

+1

Kenny - what year are the Bell and Yawkey PCs??

JeremyW 07-29-2014 06:56 PM

I've always thought & heard/read the "Cobb fielding" was kind of rare, but the signed "Cobb Fielding"... that's not easy to find. I like that one.

Kenny Cole 07-29-2014 07:02 PM

Derek,

The Bell is from the 30's but I don't know what specific year. The Yawkey is from 1959 I believe.

vintagehofrookies 07-29-2014 08:36 PM

Trey- Thats the exact same way I felt when I first saw his pose on the card and because of that I just had to have it

Jeremy- Thank You and I agree as I have seen/owned quite a few Batting Cobb's but I rarely see the fielding one

Kenny- That Cool Papa is sick, congrats!

I have binders full of what I consider Giants postcards......but what does this thread consider as "postcards"? I don't want to embarrass myself....

Cooperstown Induction Weekend Pickups

7 Attachment(s)
I was able to get about 20 old postcards in Cooperstown during Induction weekend. Here are a few of my favorites...

--First, a pair of 1920s Polo Grounds postcards, both of very similar views and featuring manager John McGraw. The first one is older and has writing on the back, but no stamp and no postmark (guessing it was likely addressed, but never sent?). The second one has a 1925 postmark and has the white border with a different font. It is clearly a copy of the first. Tough to tell in the scan, but the picture has been artificially enhanced and McGraw's name is hard to read. Also, McGraw's pic is in a slightly different place on the card.

--Second, a few Cooperstown postcards circa 1939 - one featuring the newl-opened Hall of Fame and two featuring Doubleday Field, including the opening ceremonies on June 12, 1939.

--Lastly, as a collector of anything to do with old Comiskey Park, I had to pick up this early 1940s Comiskey card.
