Monster number Update

The Monster Number Thread is now over 8 months old. The next set entered will be number 100. Over 25,000 cards are represented in the 99 current sets.
I never imagined that this stupid little idea would become a fixture on this board. I know there are those who could care less about this thread, but there are also those who continue to support it. Thanks to the latter group and I beg for the indulgence of the former. The Monster Number list will be maintained in the background with each update reported by posting, PM or email. Thanks to all for your continued support of this stupid little idea. It only seems appropriate to request any other updates at this time by closing this post with four simple words........What's Your Monster Number?:D

t206head 08-29-2012 08:56 PM

Since my last Monster update I have had a slow go of it. Mty number has only gone up by one to 154.6 I snagged a Jimmy Burke SC350.

The Monster snorts in irratation....as if my efforts to slay him bored him to near tears......:D

I'm not working toward a set, but my Monster Numbers are as follows-
set 1- 81
set 2- 9

Only aiming to pick up 3-4 more, then maybe upgrades.. for now at least.

New to the monster

I pulled my first 2 in 2002 from Topps T206 as buy backs. I loved having them, but never really thought about getting more until I join this site a month or so ago. Since then, I've picked up 8 more. My MN is 10.

Scans are my 1st and last scores.

219 unique towards the monster set, then a bunch of back variations.

Representative cards (nothing too special condition wise, someone took a bite out of Cobb:

Another solid week

It seems that the Monster is content with allowing me to plug away at the common pile. This week I have scored 7. My updated number is 183.6, It was a clean sweep for eBay although I did pick up a T207 from 69 Orioles over on the BST (Thanks Sylvain:)) Sylvain and I live like 12 miles apart. Last Sunday we met for the first time and transacted in person. A word to the wise, pick a more unique place than a Mickey-D's parking lot. We both thought we we at the right one. Oops!. Oh and there was something that vaguely reminded me of my mis-spent teens/early twenties. The whole "exchanging cash for something sold in a plastic bag (penny sleeve) that fit in the palm of my hand" thing had me keeping one eye peeled for the narco squad.:D:D:D

The seven I scored this week are:
Frank Delehanty (Louisville) P350
Jack Barry (Philadelphia) P350
Tom Needham P460
Ed Konetchy (Glove Above Head) SC150
Bill Graham (St. Louis) P350
Dick Rudolph SC350
Cy Seymour (Batting) P150

Please remove my listing from the "scorecard," Frank

Never being one who could follow directions or instructions, my ranking at number 52 shouldn't be there. I was counting every card I have, not just the unique ones. In rebuilding Howe's set, there are two that would not show up for sure (Demmit and O'Hare St. Louis Polar Bear backs) and besides that, I have duplicates, triplicates and even quadruplicates (if that is a word) of some cards. So to be fair to those who have a legitimate shot at the magic number, and those who can follow simple instructions (unlike me), please remove my listing. Sorry to have messed up the list in the first place.

frankbmd 09-29-2012 06:48 AM

Request denied, I think. Let's give Ed a hand.

For Heaven's sake Ed, remove your tail from between your legs, the Monster Number gestapo are not pursuing you. I will honor your request or preferably modify your number(s) to reflect accuracy as defined in the rules. We would hate to lose you and will not accept your admission of guilt as a demerit on your record, but rather as evidence of your character. If there is any dissent among those who read this post, speak now or forever hold your peace (or should that be piece).

Condition and back variations are not factors in your basic monster number.
Depending on interest back monster numbers (i.e. Polar Bear Monster numbers) could be considered in the future.

All that's needed in a number with scans if you care to add them.

In your initial rules, you alluded to possibly giving numerical credit for "unique" T206 back situations. So, I ask you.....does a near complete All-PIEDMONT set (519 cards)
warrant extra credit.

This set is unique in the hobby. Perhaps, the only other T206 guy that completed such a set is Bill Heitman back in the 1970's.

http://i1255.photobucket.com/albums/...ps6a6521fa.jpghttp://i1255.photobucket.com/albums/...mont150x75.jpg

Furthermore....DITTO goes for my complete All-SOVEREIGN set of 402 cards.

Incidently, you have my SOVEREIGN set # listed as 444. A complete All-SOVEREIGN set comprises of 402 cards (No Big Six in it).
I have 42 extra SOVEREIGN cards towards completing a master set. So, please correct my number on this set.

Hello. I am new to Net54 and relatively new to T206. After looking around the site a bit, I found this thread and decided it would be a great place to post my first message.

I just recently started collecting T206 cards after focusing primarily on post-war material for many years. To me, the artwork is beautiful and discovering the stories behind players I didn't know before is an absolutely fascinating experience.

My Monster number is 7, comprised of graded commons (VG - EX.) The best and worst of the group are pictured (or should at least accessible through a link) below.

Wait till you get to around 400 and it will really slow down. A lot of the commons are very abundant and easy to get fast. Then finding the hard ones at a price you want to spend get more difficult.

Frank you can update my #1 set to 431.

Thank's for the rosy forecast:D The good news is I will probably grow bored with the idle time before then and some other quest will jump into my prime chase spot. My Monster effort started in the Summer of 2010. I sprinted to the first 104 and then hit a dry spell so I went off and hit the '39 Play Ball set reasonably hard. After that I knocked the 52 Bowman set down to size. If I detour, I will always come back. The Monster is, after all, the Monster:)

Cole, My first fractional T206 HOF-er had me at a ".6" Since then, Frank, the Monster Number Man has contributed 3 more that between paper loss and nibbled corners added up to be a total of 2.3 cards, hence the 201.9 (I actually have 203 cards....199 are in more "acceptable " shape). Fractional Cards - New Policy

Seeing that Waddell again makes me want to cry.

I want to discourage future activity in the fractional T206 market for the purpose of shamelessly increasing one's Monster Number by a few tenths.

To this end new policy rules are required:

1. No longer will cards be given partial scores based on their degree of paper loss.

2. Mike's Rule - You have three choices sir. Your Monster Number will be increased to 203:), or you can accept the portion of my Bay card that has been removed to bring your Monster Number to 202, or you may invoke the Schaefer Precendent (see below) and remain a .9er forever. :D

My chief concern here is too avoid having to grade an avalanche of partial cards for scoring purposes. This would inevitably lead to disputes, "small" claims and possible disruption of the entire market.

I want to discourage future activity in the fractional T206 market for the purpose of shamelessly increasing one's Monster Number by a few tenths.

Frank .....You do what you think is best but allow me to plead my case for having my fractional Monster Number being "grandfathered in". I will keep it brief.
Germany Schaefer once stole second base, then announced to the pitcher that he was going to steal again on the next pitch. Puzzled, the pitcher looked to third and confirmed there was indeed a runner there. The pitcher shrugged his shoulders and pitched. Germany took off and slid in, throwing a cloud of dust into the air.... at first base. Germany then stole second again on the following pitch. The powers-that-be checked the rule book and finding no rule against it, gave Germany credit for, not one, but three steals on the sequence. They immediately amended the rulebook to prevent any future shenanigans for the basepaths. However, Germany's steal of first stands in the Record Book. To avoid any future fractionals is OK with me. The existing ones are no more disruptive than a single steal of first , are they?:D:D:D:D:)

Hi Frank,
I hope you received my want list.
With my buy today of Tinker, my Monster Number is 562.
The writing on the card must have been done in the teens or early twenties.

Finally went back and freed (de-slabbed) ALL of my T206's and T205's. Going a step further, even got rid of the plastic holders, so they are all just in slips. Perfectly safe, given the condition I collect, and a much more accessible collection now.

Number is now 65

Just a two card bump for me on set #1.

Picked up a Dahlen (Bos.) & a Merkle (port) yesterday.

My number stands @ 520. Just happy to upgrade a few. Nice to see more attempting the Monster. Enjoy the journey. Ignore the Monster nightmares...
