I took photos of my game used bats of these Reds sluggers and superimposed them over the photo which I took at the Reds Hall of Fame and Museum this year. A little more interesting than just photos of the game used bats.
The Frank Robinson bat is from the 1961 to 1963 period. When I purchased the bat it was already signed by Frank. I went to a card show here in Cincinnati a few years later and Frank was a signing guest. I waited until his signing period was done and asked his promoter if I could get a photo of Frank and I holding the bat. His promoter and Frank said no problem. It is a great photo, no charge, and a keepsake treasure as just a year later Frank passed. A great memory and all I had to do was ask. Frank could not have been nicer and really enjoyed seeing one of his gamers. Greg |
These game used bats are part of my vast Reds collection of gamers covering years from 1909 (Tom Downey), 1919 World Series Reds players, 20's through the 50's / 60's Reds, Big Red Machine 1975/1976 (all but 1976 Mike Lum) era, 1990 World Champion Reds, and my favorite 1999 Reds team.

Thanks for the kind words Scott, Mark and Rob. Greg these are some wonderful items you've been posting as are the other folks here recently. Keep up the good work everyone!

I'm a big fan of the 1938-40 Reds, and I just couldn't pass this up.
Attachment 431014 Jim "The Milkman*" Turner won 14 games with a nice 2.89 ERA for the World Champion 1940 Reds, and later went on to be a pitching coach for ten pennant-winning clubs, including the 1961 Reds. The photo is crystal-clear and the vintage fountain pen signature is real nice – but the reason I couldn't pass it up was the inscription: "To Joe the Great Magician" *He was called "The Milkman" because he was – you guessed it – a milkman in the off season. |

My Reds Auction items finally arrived by horse drawn mail cart. Tucker Barnhart game used 2020 bat. I decided to get it when he won his second gold glove. And I bought a mystery jersey bag, just hoping to get a name I recognized. I got Tyler Mahle, team issued, Jackie Robinson weekend jersey with Negro League Centennial patch. So that was a win! Happy with both purchases.

HOF Ernie Lombardi 1938 signed Testimonial Program
6 Attachment(s)
Wow, I can't believe that it's been almost 2 years since anyone has posted anything new on this great Cincinnati Reds thread.
Time to pump some life into this bad boy! I'm very excited to have recently added this October 2, 1938 Ernie Lombardi Testimonial Dinner Program to my 1938 Vander Meer showcase. The program is signed by Vander Meer that was in attendance as well as Ernie Lombardi on the inside cover. Check out the small Ernie Lombardi catcher dangler on the front of the program. In addition to catching Vandy's historic back-to-back no-hitters in 1938, "the Schnozz" also won the NL batting title with a .342 batting average. Lombardi, considered by many to be perhaps the slowest runner to play in the major leagues, had a HOF worthy 17 year career that featured a .306 batting average. Impressive considering that you know that all of these were clean hits, not little infield dribblers! Anyway, this program joins my Johnny Vander Meer Day program from 2 weeks earlier. Enjoy and Happy Holidays to everyone on net54! |
Awesome ensemble, Scott...
And thanks for reviving this thread! |

Wow, Chris, that poster is a real beauty. It must be from 1959, which I recall is one of the tougher Kahn's sets to collect. The players are all wearing the one-year '59 home cap with pinstripes and an embroidered wishbone "C."

this seems like the place to ask….
does anyone have any 1915 and 1916 team photos, scorecards or other material from those two years? i would love to see some examples. i think i did see a 1915 photo way back in the thread but it was hard to read the names thanks mike |

RED STOCKING BASE-BALL CLUB CINCINNATI CHAMPION BAT 1869 BASEBALL HISTORY--Who wouldn't want to have this in their Reds Collection--any idea where the bat resides now and a value?

I spent years 2-21 of my life in Ohio…was in HS and college through the Big Red Machine years…I always hated the Reds (jealousy) but that’s neither here nor there….just wondering how you guys feel about the current sorry state of the Reds. You and the city deserve better.

Cincinnati is one of the best fan bases in MLB, and their fans clearly deserve better. I'm a Reds fan living in the PNW, and saw the same BS from the Mariners for over a decade. At least the M's are now viable. Lots easier to root for them than the self-imploding Reds. Great American Ballpark should play this during the 7th inning stretch... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LqB9lhHqmsE |

I grew up in Billings, Montana, and we were the MiLB team for the Reds, and we were geographically centered to root for 3 MLB teams (Seattle, Denver, Minneapolis). I attached to the Reds and Mariners in 1995 when both made the playoffs. The Mariners overshadowed the Reds that year. I also became a huge fan of Cleveland in the late 90s. I went all in on the Reds in 1999 when they won 95 games, and in 2000 they got Griffey. The only time I've seen the Reds in person is when they travel to Seattle. Needless to say, all five teams I'm emotionally attached to have not won a World Series within my memory; Cleveland has been three times, and Colorado once. It's hard to be mad at the Reds when every other team I root for also "align payroll to our resources." So I've learned to appreciate small victories. Sent from my SM-G9900 using Tapatalk |
A salary cap would do wonders for baseball — just see how well it works in other sports like the NBA, where teams in cities like New Orleans and Sacramento have better records than teams in LA and Chicago. Unfortunately, the greedheads who run baseball have rigged the game in favor of the big market teams. For every small market team that has some success, like the Cleveland Guardians, there are a bunch of other small market teams like the Reds and A's which are doing little to get better, yet their owners are getting well-compensated through revenue sharing.

Also, just look at the Reds' "sister team". The same "small market Bengals" are thriving as one of the best teams in the NFL. |

Cesar Geronimo Super Fan
Hi Dan,
No doubt your scrapbook assembled by Jayne had to be Cesar Geronimo's biggest fan. That's a great scrapbook! Cesar Geronimo trivia question for the day: What unique milestone did Geronimo share with TWO HOF'ers? |

I have a bit of Reds memorabilia. It would take some digging. However, I can share this recent addition to my collection. I loved watching Pete tear around the bases like his ass was on fire. He played the game hard and he played it right. I always loved this quote and think it defines him and his style of play. I was thrilled when he agreed to sign the ball and inscribe it this way. He grinned while doing so.

New addition to my Johnny Vander Meer showcase
4 Attachment(s)
Admittedly, this is a cross-over 1938-1942 Brooklyn Dodgers item that I didn't even know existed until just recently.
Here is a Brooklyn Dodgers Larry McPhail souvenir baseball that is a perfect complimentary piece for my Johnny Vander Meer showcase that is a tribute to his back-to-back no-hitters in 1938. Vandy famously pitched his second consecutive no-hitter on 6/15/38, the 1st night game at historic Ebbets Field. In order to display the ball, I improvised and created a custom stand out of a Vandy commemorative silicone wristband, and the round case used to hold a set of 1993 King B collectible jerky discs. Mercurial, hard-drinking Larry McPhail was an interesting figure during his tenure in MLB. While with the Reds he brought night baseball with lights to Crosley Field. When he became President of the Dodgers a few years later, he brought night baseball to Brooklyn as well. One additional innovation that McPhail pioneered was introducing interesting die-cut tickets to special games at Brooklyn. Dodgers Opening Day games in 1939 and 1940 featured a baseball and catcher's mitt in the ticket design. The night games in the late 1930's featuring the die-cut lightbulb design seen in my Vandy showcase below were brilliant, IMHO. |
awesomeness... and it landed in the perfect spot. Congrats Scott!

I had the opportunity to buy a grail item for my Barry Larkin collection (that will be posted when it arrives; it comes from a fellow Net54 member). I had to sell a few items to pay for it. I ended up with some leftover funds, and I splurged on this 1940 partial team signed ball. But the provenance is a 1940 telegram announcing they won a contest for tickets to a WS game in Cincinnati. It comes with the original envelope.
