Here is mine. I got this from The Baseball Card Society in 1990 while I was in Thule Greenland, tracking satellites.
This card, along with the rest, are from the Feldstein find whenever that was. (I have all the BBCS docs and the receipt too from when I bought them.). Not much in the grand scheme of things, but it is cool and it is mine. Cheers, |

I collect integration-related items, so Jackie Robinson is obviously the player who is front and center. Always looking for more relevant items.

This day in Jackie history -- January 20, 1958. Jackie serves as guest referee for a charity basketball game at the Harlem YMCA featuring current and former baseball players. I forgot I even had this card, and always thought it was an odd one. It seems to depict the cartoonified Robinson making a throw from second base in 1947, when we know he only played first base his rookie year.

In January of 1958, Jackie joined the board of directors of the NAACP. Shortly after, Medgar Evers invited Jackie to Jackson, Mississippi for what the NAACP called "Jackie Robinson Day."
This day in Jackie Robinson history -- February 16, 1958, in a Jackson masonic temple, he delivered a speech "Patience, Pride, and Progress." For more, see the link below. <a href="https://books.google.com/books?id=V1FOPvDwZsoC&pg=PA330&lpg=PA330&dq=%e2%80 %9cPatience,+Pride+and+Progress%e2%80%9d+robinson& source=bl&ots=bJUUcSNvrK&sig=ACfU3U1EttcIsT9U62WCR iW5o2Ye3R2TNw&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiPnOinpuz1AhWl IkQIHbp-A2EQ6AF6BAgCEAM#v=onepage&q=%e2%80%9cPatience, Pride and Progress%e2%80%9d robinson&f=false" rel="noreferrer nofollow">books.google.com/books?id=V1FOPvDwZsoC&pg=PA330&l...</a> <a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/158992597@N08/26194213798/in/album-72157668696860149/" title="1958JRDayNAACPFeb16"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/4751/26194213798_5a3fc30a51_c.jpg" width="800" height="647" alt="1958JRDayNAACPFeb16"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script> <a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/158992597@N08/51835111416/in/album-72157668696860149/" title="1961JRNuCard"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51835111416_25bd88922e_c.jpg" width="521" height="800" alt="1961JRNuCard"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script> |

This week in Jackie Robinson history, in early 1950, filming for _The Jackie Robinson Story_ was underway. Most of the baseball scenes were filmed at Gilmore Stadium, home of the PCL's Hollywood Stars. <a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/158992597@N08/28287916049/in/album-72157668696860149/" title="1950JRStoryset"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/4723/28287916049_42d49bc194_z.jpg" width="494" height="640" alt="1950JRStoryset"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script> <a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/158992597@N08/26194280558/in/album-72157668696860149/" title="1950JRStoryP4"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/4608/26194280558_0e6be63bfa_z.jpg" width="518" height="640" alt="1950JRStoryP4"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script> <a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/158992597@N08/25257301467/in/album-72157668696860149/" title="1950JRStorysetfamily"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/4740/25257301467_efb00e2847_z.jpg" width="640" height="513" alt="1950JRStorysetfamily"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script> |
Less than a week for the MLB and PA to hash things out if they want to preserve Jackie Robinson Day on April 15th, which just so happens to be the 75th anniversary of Jackie's MLB debut. Would be a shame if the strike forced it to be pushed. Scott Boras has been eyeing March 15th as an outside date when things would be worked out. Let's hope he's right and the season can kick off in style to celebrate Jackie's semisesquicentennial.

This one is from the presumed Feldstein find. I purchase the 24 card set from the Baseball Card Society back in 1990. I saved all the related data so there is some provenance to these cards along with Mr. Robinson.
Regardless of what it is or where it came from. It is cool, old, and mine! Cheers, B. T. Dang I posted this twice in this thread. Sorry about that. |

Adam, I love those 73s!
Here's a weird "card." 1969 Shindana Afro-American History Mystery card. <a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/158992597@N08/51967759286/in/album-72157668696860149/" title="1969JRShindana"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51967759286_0ccc80e85f_w.jpg" width="259" height="386" alt="1969JRShindana"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script> And this day in Jackie history -- March 31, 1965 Jackie was at Holman Stadium as a commentator with ABC-TV. The game was a "warm-up" for the ABC-TV broadcasting system as the network was to launch a "Monday Night Baseball" series that season. Robinson was teamed with veteran sportscaster Chris Schenkel for the 1965 season. Yet another first. <a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/158992597@N08/51948526271/in/album-72157668696860149/" title="1965JRABCCommentary"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51948526271_4777f7fc35.jpg" width="419" height="500" alt="1965JRABCCommentary"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script> |
Bump in advance of tomorrow's 75th anniversary.

The Shindana's aren't weird at all. They are from a game. There are two varieties, yellow back and red back (came in perforated sheets).
Here is part of a box cover: https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...dana%20box.jpg The board game was pretty basic. It came with puzzles and each card had a value in puzzle pieces. Answer correctly and you get some pieces. Here is the Joe Louis puzzle: https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...s%20Puzzle.jpg Oddly, there wasn't a Jackie Robinson puzzle. A few years ago a set of cabinet sized cards was discovered. The art on some of the cards differs from the art on the regular cards. Perhaps a prototype or proof set? https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...0large%201.jpg https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...0large%202.jpg I've not seen the Robinson in the large format. |
Thanks for the info, Adam.
Happy Jackie Robinson Day. Here Jackie is the welcoming committee for the first black pitcher, Dan Bankhead. <a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/158992597@N08/51059404171/in/album-72157668696860149/" title="1947JRBankheadDebut"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51059404171_d1218476d4_c.jpg" width="646" height="800" alt="1947JRBankheadDebut"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script> In 1947, after Jackie Robinson had broken Major League Baseball’s color barrier, Dodgers’ General Manager Branch Rickey needed to find more pitching talent for Brooklyn to make a push for the pennant. Eventually, Rickey and his scouts decided on the red-hot right hander from Memphis. In the end, the Dodgers paid $15,000 to sign Bankhead. The Alabama Tribune reported on the signing with a story titled “Red Sox Ace First Hurler in ‘Majors.’” In the story, the Tribune reported: “Bankhead while under close scrutiny by the eagle-eyed Rickey and his veteran scout, George Sisler, last Friday night at Martin Stadium gave impressive account of himself as he struck out eleven batters to win over the Birmingham Black Barons 7 to 2. He has struck out 113 batters in 109 innings.” Bankhead soon found himself in New York, as a teammate and roommate of Jackie Robinson, and the first African American pitcher to pitch in the Major Leagues. He made his debut on August 26, 1947 at Ebbets Field against the Pittsburgh Pirates. In his debut, Bankhead struggled. He gave up ten hits and eight runs in three and one third innings. The Dodgers went on to lose 16-3. In fact, Bankhead batted much better than he pitched, hitting a homerun in his first appearance. The Daily News the following day ran the headline, “Pirates Overwhelm Flock, 16-3 Bankhead Routed, Hits HR.” The story also said, “Bankhead entered to the accompaniment of a standing ovation.” Source: <a href="https://tnmuseum.org/Stories/posts/dan-bankhead" rel="noreferrer nofollow">tnmuseum.org/Stories/posts/dan-bankhead</a> |
