Cool thread and great cards as always! I'm a few days late to the party but here's mine for the day. I'll start off with my favorite pre-war card/pose:
|
1950 Boy's Shonen premium of Kaoru Betto, Japan Hall of Fame outfielder for Osaka Tigers and Mainichi Orions. Later noted for his image being sported on Jeff Bridges' t-shirt in The Big Lebowski. Card is about the size of a T3.

T201s are annoyingly tall, but you can still display them in a binder. I put mine in cardsavers, take a sheet of card stock and cut out a hole the size of the card saver, and then glue some corners down to keep it in place. Slip the whole thing in one of those full-page protective plastic sheets. You can store them in the binder, keeps the card protected, and you can see both sides.

That Jim Thorpe card, PSA 5. Wow ! Very nice. Looked at getting a copy while ago, gave up. But now ... want it, want it, want it.

Nice DeVore Val!
I like that some Japanese items have made it to this thread, so here are two 1923 photos that I dig (I Masuda and S Tanabe). |

King Carl. The Meal Ticket. In the 1934 All Star Game played at the Polo Grounds, Hubbell struck out five future Hall of Famers in succession: Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Al Simmons and Joe Cronin. |

This is an advertising piece that was issued to promote both Base Ball: 1845-1871, Volume 1 by Seymour Church (usually called "the Church book") and a full-size Waddell picture (presumably without the advertising copy). I was wondering why Church chose Waddell to use (and why he was pitching with Los Angeles after already being in the majors for a few years) and the answer can be found here https://sabr.org/bioproj/person/rube-waddell/. Basically it was a contract issue coupled with his popularity in California (the book was published in San Francisco).

Thank you. I always felt bad for the catcher...I'm sure his parents would have preferred it if they let him pose with the mask on top of his head.

This D381 of Richard Egan is a long time participant on this board, but he has decided that now is the time to haunt this thread.

If you'd told a 12 year old me that I would one day own a Cy Young card, I would never have believed you.
