Just completed my Bazooka Mantle set. Needless to say, the '68 was tough and I severly overpaid for it, but set complete!!!

Stonepony 06-08-2016 10:35 PM

I'm collecting the bazookas too. Great job!

Thanks guys. My 59 and 60 were psa and I crossed over because I am an OCD lunatic and wanted uniformity!

Well not a recent pickup but I've only been lurking here for a couple weeks so figured I'd show off one of my best pickups in my 37 years of collecting.

Bought it in September 2007 on eBay quite impulsively. I was just starting to expand out from hockey (as I had recently achieved my goal of having the rookie card of every 1000 point man in NHL history) and into the other three major sports and after winning the auction I had some big time buyers remorse as it appeared I had overpayed by around 25%.

Here was the situation...I did no research prior to bidding, I placed said bid in the last few seconds of the auction, and only discovered the auction in its last few minutes. Point being I had no idea what I was doing, five minutes before buying the card I had no plans to buy one so soon, all I knew was that it was a really nice Mantle rookie card and if I was going to pursue baseball HOF rc's, may as well start with one of the best.

So what ended up being a very impulsive purchase that I overpaid for at the time has turned out to be one of the best buys of my hobby career, almost nine years later.

So here it be in all its glory:

The Red Heart Mantle is one of the nicest Mantle cards produced. You've got a good one there!!!

Very sharp!

Some severely underappreciated cards.

A couple of matchbooks I just got back from psa...would love to find a "book offer" Yoo-Hoo.

JollyElm 06-27-2016 05:56 AM

A small booklet given out as a premium by Carvel sometime in the 70's…

http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/...ntlecarvel.jpg

Edited to add: Whoops. It wasn't given out, it was sold as the price on front indicates.

Leon 06-27-2016 05:59 AM

Nice story. My guess is a lot of us have done something similar but most don't turn out quite that well. Congrats!! You had great Karma going.....

I'm almost embarrassed to show mine after looking at all these amazing cards

CxG Seven Dust 06-27-2016 06:38 PM

Not sure where or what this is from, but picked it up at a local shop for a pretty good price. Not even sure if it's gradable.

The tape is on the custom made plastic holder and not on the cardboard.

The back is a plain brown colorlike you see on the bazooka cards.

This is from a Mantle board game published by Garner called "Big League All Stars," or something like that. It came with a couple of pieces and people have broken up the game to sell them individually. These playing cards are cool but I believe they are too large for PSA to grade. I've never looked in to SGC. They aren't terribly rare but the color and design are great. Cool item.

Great looking card Jesse, what do you still need ?

pokerplyr80 06-28-2016 07:42 PM

Thanks, I actually have the last two in transit, although I settled for a nice looking PSA 6 for the 69. The rest of my 60s Mantles are 7 or 8, so I'll look for an upgrade down the road. I also want to get a centered 60 to replace mine as it's a little off.

Canofcorn 06-29-2016 12:51 PM

Nice 53, one of my favorite Mantle images. My 61 arrived today. Only one more to go!

jfkheat 06-30-2016 10:17 AM

Here are some of the Mantles that I picked up in the last year or so. I bought the PSA 6 Red Heart one and decided to do the set. I later replaced the 6 with the 8.

Good stuff Dave, and with the angle and light source you did a better job than Topps in blotting out the little phantom guy on the 57 card :)

Stonepony 06-30-2016 12:30 PM

Lol.

Yes, I guess I did unintentionally.

Just bad lighting in my apartment. Angled shots work best at the moment.

If selling, I would use the flash and take better close ups of course.

LuckyLarry 06-30-2016 12:59 PM

I'm always on the lookout for extra Mantle cards. And I don't care what they look like if the price is right. Recent pick-ups:
1953 Bowman color #44 the Standard Catalog says the NM "value" is $775 I paid $15 or 1.9% book.
1957 Topps #407 the Standard Catalog says the NM "value" $465 this card cost me $14 or 3% book.

and the card that i probably shoveled 3 driveways to pay for to get signed w/ one of those stubs:
