I'd been looking for a Tim Hendryx for awhile, the writing made a nice one obtainable finally. I also forgot to post this one last month back when I got it. Thanks Iggy, one of the hardest 1927 Yankees to get anything period on

Not the rarest of cards, but I love the pose and colors. I've been looking for a good deal on one in the VGish range for quite awhile. I finally found it, in a BIN on ebay of all places. I thought that was pretty amazing given the current state of BINs on ebay.

It's a magical feeling, isn't it, Jon? I couldn't believe it when I held the card up to my nose. I got a whiff of the tobacco that the card was packaged with a century ago.

The Monster has its claws in me, no doubt.

Finally Got A Good Scan

Just got the good scan done.

Still can't believe I found this card in un-mangled condition at a decent price; what some guys are asking on 1s that are very rough on the eye is wild.

nice cards Luke and Matt. I've always been a fan of the T206 Donlin in that pose as well, plan on picking one up at some point.

That Jackson is sweet for a fair graded card!

While I am certain that every other card in this thread is more valuable than my latest pickup, I just cannot believe how much I have fallen in love with this little piece of cardboard. This is the first ungraded T206 I've ever owned, and as I pulled it out of it's top loader and penny sleeve tonight, and held it in my hands, the history of this little common overwhelmed me. I started to think about the travels this card must have taken. The rounded corners, scrapes, stains and dimples on the front and back tell a story. Who first pulled it out of a pack of Piedmont tobacco back in 1909 or 1910? Who may have owned this card, and where? It's a feeling I haven't gotten from any of the graded cards I've added. They, too, are beautiful, but there is something to be said for being able to feel a card in your hand, and smell it. It's just an amazing feeling.

Bill, I am also considering a Rossman that a card shop has that is also raw. I agree that it is a beautiful card. Have you heard the story about Rossman and the game he got in a fight with another player after being baited by Cobb. It is very interesting also sounds like he was a great fielder as well. His Wikipedia was interesting.

Thank you, mrvster. I am most definitely bitten. Unfortunately, while I am collecting the monster--slowly--there are several other sets that are taking a nibble, too. :D I really want to start working on the T202 Hassan Triple Folders set, and there are several I want to pick up from the '53 Bowman Color set, just to name a few. But that's one of the best things about this hobby. You can collect however you want. There's no right way or wrong way to do it. So while I check off the occasional T206 over the years, I can still pick up cards from other players I love, in other sets I love. And, I can still work on my modern card collection. I just have to be patient.

Jason, I have to admit I know next to nothing about Claude Rossman yet (beyond his being a teammate of Cobb's). I briefly looked up his page on Baseball Reference before pulling the trigger, but that just scratched the surface. I love portraits, and thought the Rossman had incredible eye appeal for an unslabbed card. Lee had it up for sale at a really good price, so it was too good to pass up.

I was really surprised at the visceral reaction I had when I held it in my hands sans penny sleeve or top loader. Admiring them in person when slabbed is one thing, but holding them in their natural state is something else completely. The color, for one thing, really pops. And looking at it under magnification..you really get a feeling for the journey this little piece of cardboard has taken over the last century.

Let me know if you pick up the one at your local card shop.

Didn't you beat me on one almost just like that in REA a couple years ago? Great looking card, btw,..

RGold 09-25-2013 09:31 AM

Yeah, this is my second but i don't feel bad because I know you found a nice one later. :D:D:D

ZachS 09-25-2013 01:42 PM

How did that card only get a 40?! I'm guessing there must be something wrong on the back?

RGold 09-25-2013 02:28 PM

T213-2 Coupons are almost always kept from higher grades due to light creases(cracks) which are a result of the cards being manufactured with some kind of lacquer coating to the front that would become damaged during the production process. Or so I have been told.

I like to collect the ones that look minty with strong corners that grade very good because of a crease. Other collectors may prefer those few cards that are not cracked but have a weaker eye appeal.

My Cobb has a 1/4 inch crack upper right near the border. It is really hard to capture the flaw even with a larger scan. Since I keep all of my cards at the bank, and only look at my collection on my ImageEvent website, the creases do not bother me as much. :D:D:D

Exhibitman 09-25-2013 03:36 PM

Those Mendelsohns are off the charts, Chris. Remind of me oversized exhibits...

...must...not...chase...one...

joeadcock 09-25-2013 04:08 PM

Yep Chris

Nice one

Thank you, John, for this Joe Lake beauty. Presents better than the technical grade (there is a little crease in the lower left hand corner that is very difficult to see).

Now I am ready to start pursuing some of the Hall of Famers. :D

That's a beautiful card Bill, one of my favorites.

the 'stache 09-27-2013 12:54 AM

Thank you, Chris. :)

At some point in the future, I'll add another at a little higher grade (I like the idea of a SGC 40 set). But until then, I am very happy with the one I have. It's got pretty nice centering and coloring, and the surface is nice and clean from any marks or dirt.

That's a beauty Bill. You have great taste, as color and registration look nearly perfect. I wish I'd picked up more of the strong eye appeal but lower grade cards along the way.. But I'm finding myself looking more and more for these gems

the 'stache 09-27-2013 05:43 AM

Thanks, Ian. :D It really is a beauty. There are no paper loss issues or marks on the front or back, and outside of the one crease, I can't see any issues that would lower the grade. I lucked out getting such a nice card.

Thx fellas. Just thinking about some kid pulling that Cobb from a box of Cracker Jacks about a century ago is awesome! Never had a CJ before.

Really great cards everyone...

Good God, Matt. Awesome pickups!!

Luke, a very nice Heinie! Ok, that sounded a little weird.

Nelson, great pickups. How close are you to completing the '33 set?

The month of September is finishing in fine fashion. I hope to have a couple substantial additions to the October thread. :D
