And the drop begins...back to "only" a half mil...

barrysloate 06-26-2010 04:59 AM

Now it's at $501,000. Are any of the bids real? Are we to assume that every one of the bids placed between 500K and 999K were fake? I still have no idea what's going on.

I see he deleted bids of those who never contacted him. Very strange indeed.

teetwoohsix 06-26-2010 12:09 PM

Maybe it's just me, but I really don't think someone will be paying $500,000.00++ for this card. If the seller can get it,good for him/her,-I just don't think it will happen........

Clayton

FUBAR 06-26-2010 12:20 PM

I honestly think he should re-list the auction, start over with ebay pre-qualifying the bidders..... get rid of all the crap.

All the Strasburg 1/1s have been pulled. There are 3 different. The Superfractor, the red 1/1 and the red autograph 1/1.

"Entered wrong amount" is another way of saying fake bid. And there sure were a lot of them.

FUBAR 06-26-2010 02:05 PM

Entered wrong amount, i always think guys do this to see what the other person's "max" is

dstraate 06-26-2010 07:46 PM

Easy to enter an accidental bid when there are that many zeros.

This card is going for well over twice the value of my house. Thoreau would not be impressed.

Rickyy 06-27-2010 02:30 AM

Maybe the Nationals bid for this card...and will give it away as a publicity stunt...the 3 millionth customer to come through the gates before the end of the season gets the card presented to him/her from Strausburg himself.....then they could also write off the expense for business purposes..:)

I see he deleted bids of those who never contacted him. Very strange indeed.

Bids are still being pulled and the price is down to $225,800. This auction has been such a mess that I think it should be cancelled.

barrysloate 06-27-2010 11:59 AM

I agree Tim. This auction is a real mess. And the seller seems to be a solid guy. It's the bidders who are playing games and screwing him up.

brass_rat 06-27-2010 12:26 PM

Looks like the seller took the advice of those here...all bids cancelled and it's back to 99 cents...

Steve

barrysloate 06-27-2010 02:26 PM

That's really strange. Are we to assume none of those bids were real? That's impossible.

David Atkatz 06-27-2010 02:32 PM

Maybe people are smarter than we sometimes give them credit for.

FUBAR 06-27-2010 02:33 PM

all bids were canceled and the auction closed. I am sure he will relist very soon....

barrysloate 06-27-2010 02:35 PM

I'm sure the bids were genuine up to say....fifty bucks. After that I'm not sure.:)

I think some of the bids were real however after the bidding frenzy and subsequent retractions I don't see how anyone could have faith in the auction or any of the remaining bids. The seller did the right thing and cancelled the auction and will be wiser (we hope) in setting up the next listing.

FUBAR 06-27-2010 02:48 PM

I dont think the seller had any clue that things would go the way they did...

Barry.... i still think this card will go for 100k......

David Atkatz 06-27-2010 02:49 PM

If it does, it will certainly reinforce my belief in P.T. Barnum's judgment.

barrysloate 06-27-2010 02:58 PM

I know it's worth more than fifty dollars but does anyone really believe this piece of...nothing...is worth 100K?

Abravefan11 06-27-2010 03:03 PM

There are three Strasburg 1 of 1's. The red sold for $4k and the refractor sold for $16k. I think given the hype around these cards and Strasburg coupled with the autograph that this card will go for more than the other two. I will be surprised if it goes for $100k, I would guess more in the $30k-$50k range but who knows.

FUBAR 06-27-2010 03:08 PM

the re-sale of the superfractor is now at 24k with a day and a half left

I would never pay 1k for the auto card but my prediction is 100k based on the amount of idiots out there with too much money!

Jim,

LOL!

Do you define someone as an "idiot... with too much money," the very first time they outbid you on something, or does it take multiple auctions?

Peter_Spaeth 06-27-2010 03:47 PM

LOL what a surprise.
2010 Bowman Stephen Strasburg Red Autograph 1/1 AUTO
1/1 Autograph BEST CARD ON THE Market!!!! RARE!! AUTO

Item condition: --

FUBAR 06-27-2010 04:29 PM

I define an idiot as "someone who would spend 100k on a card that is a month old and of a player who has played 4 games." I remember awhile back there was another sure fire pitcher who came out of the blocks with his guns ablaze... his name, Kerry Woods.... he had amazing stuff at the start! It only takes one injury to make that card worth 20$.

It isn't hard to outbid me right now.. unemployed now for 7 months leaves my card budget at about 10$.... had some good interviews so hopefully the sun will shine on this IDIOTS ass soon....then i can buy a real card here and there and get back to the BST again.... at least with my birthday money i was able to get 4 deals done on the BST....

they usually get called the "c" word! and i put the L on my own forehead!

hunterdutchess 06-27-2010 05:15 PM

The refractor winner who is reselling looks like he made a nice flip. It's at $23,599-6.10-($23,599*6%)=$22,190-$16,400=$5,790 profit. Thats more than I have spent on my entire collection!

WillBBC 06-27-2010 06:10 PM

The guy will most likely sell it through somebody so that the bidders can register before throwing up a 50K price as a joke. I hope that didn't cost him too much in fees.

Buythatcard 06-28-2010 07:18 AM

So, what happened? Listing ended with 0 bids.

FUBAR 06-28-2010 09:55 PM

If anyone cares, the original Strasburg that was being re-sold, officially sold for 25k , so the guy made $8800 less ebay fees for his 3 weeks of owning the card....

and we were making fun of him!

Like I said, there are good short term investments and good long term investments, even in baseball cards. The shiny stuff can still bring you huge cash, but you have to know when to sell.

Leon 06-29-2010 08:33 AM

how neat is this?

To me this is actually legal gambling at it's best. If he loses his next game how much, if any, will his cards go down? If he loses 2 in a row, then how much, if any? AND if he keeps winning...then what? Hey, it's bringing some excitement to baseball card collecting and that is a good thing. Certainly it's not my cup o tea but it is interesting.

That's funny, I've always compared packs of modern cards to those gas station scratch offs.

Has anyone seen the video of Beckett grading this card? They tried to cash in on some cheap publicity and it really backfired on them. They used to be so tough on grading modern cards that a Beckett 9.5 used to mean something.

Beckett customers are all over the web bashing the company now. I know they are customers because these are collectors on shiny card blogs and they are the ones using Beckett.

Its kinda funny watching the video. They immediately begin explaining how a card off center front and back can grade gem mint. They also turned the card around fast enough before the auction ended. (not mentioned in the video) Raw - $16,400, Beckett graded - $25,000. The stunt did not work though.

tbob 06-29-2010 10:54 AM

2-2 and he doesn't get to face Kansas City again this year and maybe only one more start against Pittsburgh. Let's wait and see how he does against the better teams in the National League.
I guess this will put all the All-Star game selection garbage to bed.

Jeez, after watching the game last night. Strasburg will be lucky to be a .500 pitcher as long as he's on the Nationals.

tbob 06-29-2010 11:38 AM

Guess he's getting a taste of how Walter Johnson felt when he started his career with the Senators! I thought I saw somewhere where Johnson and Bery Blyleven had the most 1-0 losses in history.

steve B 06-29-2010 11:52 AM

It will be interesting to see how he compares to other great pitchers for his first year. Maybe Nolan Ryan?

6 and 9, 134 innings, 133 so, 75walks and 3.09 era

Going by wins and losses makes little sense for a guy on a weak team.

$9000 profit in about 3 weeks ain't too bad in my books and people say modern Sports cards are a bad investment;)
