Did you know Brooks was a business man?
1 Attachment(s)
Back in the 60'S & 70'S Brooksipersted a restaurant. Brooks Robinson’s Gorsuch House was located at 511 Gorsuch Avenue, off of Greenmount between 32nd and 33rd streets. Brooks Robinson was a part-owner from around 1964 to 1977 Waverly’s Gorsuch House originally shared a name with another Oriole (and Robinson) before Brooks Robinson entered into partial ownership with former Orioles coach Eddie Robinson in the early 1960s. The menu had many Maryland favorites. Here are a couple items from the restaurant…a matchbooks and napkin. Would love to find a glass ash tray.

It can be done in 61
1 Attachment(s)
NFS - Not directly Brooks related. The Orioles were ready for a big year in 1961 and their motto was, “It can be done in 61.” Here, I show a larger bumper sticker, napkin and a Christmas Card. Are any of you familiar with other related items with this slogan?

1969 Globe Imports Checkerboard Back Card
2 Attachment(s)
NFS - Recently I found the 1969 Globe Import Checkerboard Back Card, which completes my Brooks Robinson PSA Master Set. I have 303 of the 303 items in the set. There are two versions of this card…plain back and the one below, the Checkerboard. Only two are graded. The other one graded is a PSA 8. I thought there was only one of these but through a little persistence, I found one to complete the set. Ironically, this is my least favorite item in the Brooks Robinson PSA Master Set. This will be the second time I completed the Brooks Master Set. God help me if something else is added, which I can’t find.
|
Charlie,
Any info why/when they made a checkerboard back one in addition to the common blank back ones? Thanks, Rich Quote:

1969 Globe Import
Rich, no idea on the Checkerboard variation. Is out 18 months ago or so I learned about. A guy asked me if interested. I told him not really, then it was added to the Registry. I then sadly became interested. I believe each player in the “deck” has a variation. I am guessing they are very rare. I actually am not a fan but can’t not have something Brooks. Ha.

1950s Orioles Decal

I found this at a flea market this weekend. I thought it was from the 1950s but I've never seen it before. It is about 3.5 inches square. Can anyone say where this is from?

The Schooner - Brooks Robinson
NFS - I just got this Brooks item. It is a copy of the spring 1972 National Brewing Company's newsletter/booklet. Its cover story is about the Orioles 1971 trip to Japan. The cover photo show Brooks running towards second base after he has hit a homerun in one of the Japanese ballparks. The inside has several pages of stories about the trip and a handful of photos of Orioles players, wives, and Japanese hosts.

Japanese items
2 Attachment(s)
Good evening,
I was recently able to acquire a couple more Japanese collectibles. The first one is from 1978 and is about the All-Star Game. Brooks and Jim Palmer are on the cover: Attachment 572413 The second is a wall calendar that features Cal and Ken Griffey Jr. Most people have probably seen the photo used on the front of the calendar from a magazine from Japan that featured it at the same time. Although the inside features MLB players, Cal is only on the cover: Attachment 572414 |
Mike Young passes away
3 Attachment(s)
I just saw where former Orioles outfielder Mike Young passed away. He played for the Orioles from 1982-1987, ending his career in 1989 after playing for three other teams. From 1984-1987, Mike was mostly an everyday player. His best season for the Orioles was in 1985, when he hit 28 HRs and drove in 81 runs.

I recently purchased a small collection of Rochester Red Wings memorabilia and included was this Camera Day SGA piece from August of 1980 (measures 3.5" x 5.5" folded; that folds out to a team photo). I sent the scans to Alan to see if he had ever seen one and he shared that he had not & that it might be worthwhile sharing with the board (too bad it wasn't from 1981):

Those are very cool. I don't know if the name Linda Warehime means anything to you but she was easily the most recognizable name on the Grounds Crew during that time period (1968-75). She was well known for sweeping the bases and occasionally swatting an umpire or visiting team third base coach playfully on the rear once she completed her duties. |

New Programs
4 Attachment(s)
Hi guys,
I haven't posted much stuff lately, because I've been dealing with my mom's estate, but wanted to share a couple items I've picked up recently. Many of you know that I really enjoy collecting programs, especially older programs of Orioles minor league affiliates. I've was able to pick up a new Orioles World Series program and get one program closer to my minor league goal of a program from every Orioles affiliate since 1954. The first program is a 1983 World Series program printed by the Quad-City Times from Davenport, Iowa. I had never seen it before and my best guess is the newspaper was following the Orioles closely because O's pitcher Mike Boddicker is an Iowa native. 1983 World Series Program (Quad-City Times) Attachment 578065 The second program is another one of my holy grails. I hate to use that term, but since I'm averaging about one new minor league program a year from those obscure teams, this is a program from a franchise I never expected to find. In 1955, one of the Orioles class C affiliates was the Thetford Mines Mineurs from Thetford Mines, Quebec, Canada. In fact, Thetford Mines was an O's affiliate in 1954-1955. The team played in the Provincial League that fielded 6 teams. The Mineurs finished the season 42-88 and in last place. The team averaged 547 fans per game, so programs (or anything from the team) are pretty scarce. Barney Lutz was the manager. Here's the program and two players from the team, Ray Barker and Al Nagel. Barker ended up playing 5 games for the Orioles in 1960. He's the only player from the team to reach the majors. 1955 Thetford Mines Mineurs program Attachment 578066 Ray Barker and Al Nagel Attachment 578063 Attachment 578064 |
Congrats Alan on the new program!

Great Pickups Alan!
Congratulations |
Very nice programs Alan. Thanks so much for sharing with the group. Love the unique and oddball stuff…

Ron Shelton who played professionally in the Orioles farm system from 1967-71 (making it as high as AAA Rochester), wrote/directed the movie Bull Durham which came out (gulp) 35 years ago.
The character of Nuke LaLoosh was loosely based on the stories he had heard about pitcher Steve Dalkowski. A year or so ago Shelton wrote a book about the making of the movie and a mutual friend assisted me in getting my copy signed: https://i.imgur.com/osrst2S.jpg |

Was good to see Cal Jr. at the ASG the other day & while I think I probably posted this during COVID, I thought perhaps I'd do so again...
It's a 2001 ASG ball signed by Cal beneath the logo, but I also added Charley Steiner from ESPN on the sweet spot with an inscription. Some of you may recall when Cal hit that HR to lead off the third inning (in his final All Star Game), Steiner's radio call upon the swing was "Did he Do It?, Did He Do it?, He Did!" Fortunately Steiner was doing radio for the Yankees circa 2005 & a buddy of mine me got in the Press Box to see him prior to a late season Orioles/Yankees game at Camden Yards (and he was happy to accommodate my request). https://i.imgur.com/aIN03Uv.jpg |
I discovered today that RHP Bob Harrison whose MLB career consisted of one game each in 1955 & 1956 passed away last January at the age of 92:

Last week I showed a couple items that I recently picked up from a long time Orioles collection, but here is another piece from it.
I was so pleased when the Orioles traded for Eddie Murray mid way through the '96 season (though I wished he would have finished his career there) but here is a 1996 warm up top of his: https://i.imgur.com/OclKXEH.jpghttps://i.imgur.com/e54nH1A.jpghttps://i.imgur.com/JHo6DgN.jpg |

Anyone have this 1971 Brooks Robinson Post Card. Look carefully. Would love to buy or trade for it. The Font is Large and towards top edge below picture centered. The 1970 has small font centered and 1972 has large font centered. All three are the same picture but the font and name centering is different.

recently picked this interesting B&W glossy team photo of the 1973 Asheville Orioles (AA) managed by Cal Ripken Sr. The team went 71-69 that season and notable players included Taylor Duncan, Bob Bailor & Mike Willis:

The Orioles are celebrating the 1983 World Champion team tonight at Camden Yards. Many of the former players from the team were honored before the game.
Back in 1984, I asked a friend of mine, that was an excellent artist, to paint baseballs of all the players on the team. I supplied her with MLB baseballs and postcards of all the players to go by. She did a fantastic job. The pictures don't do them justice. Here's the set displayed, along with close ups of a few players. |

Alan,
I think I said it beforehand but I think that artist did a wonderful job. Also, they make for a really nice display as well. |
Alan those are great painted baseballs! Great idea!

Orioles garment bag
4 Attachment(s)
I recently picked this up from Goodwill, but I'm coming up empty on my attempts to learn more about it. The bag itself is heavy duty, but has absolutely no markings or tags on the inside. The logo is similar to Orioles logos from the mid-1950s, but not exact. If this is a homemade job then someone did a great job applying the decal. You guys have amazing collections, so I'm hoping someone might be able to offer a little insight into this item. Thanks!
|
ironically, your garment bag reminded me of an equipment bag that is on eBay currently sourced from the collection of Tom Chism who played in their system in the mid to late 1970's (which included a brief appearance with the MLB club in '79)...Curious what geographic area did you pick this up from?

Bill - Thanks for sharing the Chism bag. My bag came from an online Goodwill auction from a Baltimore store.
