I've finally crossed something of my want list, sort of.
My collection for me has always been about collecting what I enjoy versus worrying about future value. That's probably why I get most of my 8x10 photos personalized. I've mentioned in several posts that one of my collecting goals is to have photos, preferably head shots, of everyone to ever play for the Orioles, pictured in an Orioles uniform. Up until now, one guy has always eluded me. John Buzhardt had a nice major league career with the White Sox and several other teams. In 1967, Buzhardt played briefly for the Orioles and to my knowledge no photos of him in an Orioles uniform have ever popped up. The Orioles don't even have any photos of him. While I prefer original items in my collection and not copies/reprints, sometimes you have to make an exception, if an item doesn't exist. See post #175 about my customized Hartland statue of Luis Aparicio. Having all but given up hope of finding John Buzhardt as an Oriole, I enlisted my son's girlfriend. She is very good with Photoshop and turned a head shot photo of John Buzhardt with the White Sox into a 1967 photo with the Orioles. She took parts of about four different 1967 Orioles team issued player photos and this is the result. While not actually original, I'm very happy to have finally added John Buzhardt to my collection. Total value to me - priceless.... 1967 John Buzhardt photo Attachment 501248 |
Alan that looks really good and if you hadn’t told me I wouldn’t have known. Congrats on your new photo!
|
Alan,
Very cool; now let’s do that for the ones your still missing. |
Wow Alan, that photoshop was really well done! When I first saw it I thought you had landed an original!
Back in 1988, I knew Cal Ripken Jr. was approaching his 1,000th consecutive game (which was to be played at Fenway Park). I called the Red Sox box office about a week prior, bought a couple tickets which were mailed to me. All was fine however over the years, the printing on the ticket itself began to fade to the point where you couldn't read the date, opponent, etc. In the interim, I also found out that June 25th was the day that the infamous Bill Ripken baseball card photo was taken. A collector friend of mine who collects all versions of that card, scored a couple of season tickets to that game (which used stronger printing) recently and he generously sent me one. For years I've owned the lineup card to that game, so the ticket stub now makes a great companion piece: https://i.imgur.com/KzVHRG3.jpghttps://i.imgur.com/iIJDYCw.jpg |
Quote:
Interesting you should mention that game. I was actually at the game in Boston and yes both of my tickets have faded like yours. I tried to laminate them, but that didn't help. Cool story. I didn't know the connection to the Billy Ripken card. I wonder if I witnessed the photo being taken and never knew it. LOL |
Quote:
I know the Orioles did a team issued postcard of Westlake, so that means an 8x10 should also be out there somewhere. Originals of the other four reside in other collections, so there's still hope there. Buzhardt is the only guy I think might be impossible to find as an original. The search continues..... |
John Buzhardt
Congrats Alan, what a great gift!

Have this 79 BW 8x10 of Dave Ford as well as (3) 1984 Japanese Baseball League Handbooks that picture Ripken Murray and others and mentions their upcoming trip to Japan to celebrate their WS victory. The books have varying degrees of moisture exposure. Selling all together and buyer can pick which book they like best for their pc and pass/sell the others along. Message me if interested.

I reached somewhat of a milestone last October when I acquired this 1978 Bluefield Orioles signed ball (signed by Cal Jr. & 16 others). Was purchased from a woman who attended games in Bluefield, WV as a child with her grandparents (and still lives there)...In 63 games, Cal hit .264 with no homers & 33 errors...Obviously better things were to come!
The milestone I reached is that I now have a team signed ball from every season in CRJ's career.....My 1979 ball is from Charlotte (after he was called up), so I'd still love to have one from Miami.... Here is the ball and a team signed program (which I've owned for years): https://i.imgur.com/bTB0dPj.jpghttps://i.imgur.com/OfqulIL.jpg |

Very cool, Bill. Love finding things to collect of a player and the Orioles.
Finished my Run of Programs for Orioles. Trying to collect all star pennants, tickets and programs for Brooks where he appears. Missing on Orioles team picture pennants for Brooks playing days. The list goes on. |

Obviously I love the Bluefield program. It reminded me of a question I've had for years. For some reason, Bluefield issued two very different programs in 1978 (a colored version and a B&W version). Anyone know the story behind the two versions? I doubt that Bluefield was visionary enough to anticipate a young Cal Ripken Jr going on to a HOF career. Bluefield was known to use left over programs from one year the following season. Here's an example of a 1974 program being reused in 1975 with a sticker over the year. Attachment 502978 Attachment 502979 However, 1978 is the only year that I'm aware of that Bluefield issued two different programs. FYI - In my years of collecting O's minor league programs, I've found the color version to be tougher to find than the B&W. Any info would be appreciated.... Attachment 502980 Attachment 502981 |
Baltimore Orioles Bethlehem Steel Scorecard - 1968
2 Attachment(s)
Here is a scorecard only distributed on 1 night - June 25, 1968 at the Bethlehem Steel Company Family night when the Orioles beat the Boston Red Sox. My favorite Orioles logo of all-time is on the cover, while the reverse side has photos of Brooks Robinson, Frank Robinson and other Orioles players and manager Hank Bauer. The inside pages feature a scorecard for scorekeeping the game. I have an extra one for sale or trade if anyone is interested.

Was it programs or yearbooks you were trying to complete? There are a bunch of regular season program variations. I'm still looking for the 2010 Scorecard included with the 2nd Edition of Orioles Magazine (Brian Matusz cover). Do you have the video yearbooks that the Orioles did in 1987 & 1988 instead of a printed yearbook. Unique idea that wasn't well received in my opinion? Here's the 1987. I also have the 1988, but no picture (It's in Maine) 1987 Orioles Video Yearbook Attachment 502984 |
Yearbooks, Alan…sorry
Hi, Alan. I meant to say Yearbooks. Sorry. I excluded the video Yearbooks. goodness, I don’t have the courage to try to collect all of the Programs. Who would be crazy enough to do that? Ha. I am looking for a 1964 Martin Family Night Program (17 Jul 64). Coincidentally, it has a similar bird with one shown on this string.

I appreciate all the kind words about my '78 Bluefield items...
Alan, I believe there are more B&W '78 programs (which are more like folded scorecards) than color ones because there was a hobby "find" of them (an unopened box or two) back in the late 1980's. Now why they made both versions is subject to debate.... Anyways here is the 1988 Yearbook (again a VHS one as Alan noted) with a neat cover photo: https://i.imgur.com/zSPQ2OE.jpg |

Back in August of 1978, Baltimore Sun Magazine (which was a Sunday paper insert) posted a cover photo of Cal Ripken Jr. & Tim Norris and wrote an article inside about two Baltimore natives in their first year of professional baseball in Bluefield, WV.
I was fortunate enough to pick up several of the original photos that were part of the article & here is my favorite (signed by both CRJ & Norris): https://i.imgur.com/n08LBYk.jpghttps://i.imgur.com/NY9MB9Q.jpg |

So Tim Norris pitched five seasons in pro ball for the Orioles, reaching as high as AA, and later as an adult became the manager for Youse's Orioles, which is a collegiate summer baseball team...
I went to a few Youse's games in 2013 & was able to get a lineup card or two postgame from one of the players...If you look at their lineup, you'll probably recognize the names of Boddicker (James), Ripken (Ryan) & Sheets (Gavin...who made his MLB debut in '21)...Larry Sheets was in the stands the day I was there as well. https://i.imgur.com/vCI7u7w.jpg |

Ike DeLock
2 Attachment(s)
I just heard from Bill Haelig that former Orioles pitcher Ike DeLock passed away at age 92. DeLock had a nice 11 year major league career, almost all with the Boston Red Sox.
He did have a brief stint with the Orioles from June 9 - July 19, 1963, appearing in 7 games. Because of his brief time with the Orioles, I'm not aware of any team issued photos or postcards of him. That makes anything of DeLock in an Orioles uniform very hard to find. I have found two photos of him and both look like they were taken the same day. Attachment 505849 Attachment 505851 |

Greetings. Picked up a few new bobbles so thought to post. I shared on the Brooks FB page but figured a few of you are not on there. I think i have 33 different ones. I forgot to include 2011 Gold Glove statue. A few folks sent me a list of ones i am missing (a couple bears, different colored Hartland, different version of the Arbys, different version of the Bank Atlantic, taller version of the HoF bobble with black hat and bat down). There are a few others out there i am missing. I am sure there are a few here some of you have not seen. If you are aware of any others missing, let us know. Enjoy.

Orioles / All Star Pennants
1 Attachment(s)
Good evening. I posted this one on a Pennant group on FB but thought to share here. Below are my Orioles pennants. Mostly, focused on Brooks days but you will find a few earlier, a few from 1979 and 1983. I am missing one of the Pennants with the picture. 1973 eludes me. Also, i am collecting the All Star pennants featuring Brooks' name. I believe he appeared for the first time on a pennant in 1962. He is on 1962-1974. Shown on far left is 1965, 66, 70, 71 and 72. If anyone has a All Star Pennant not shown or a 1973 Pennant with the picture, let me know. I am no pennant expert so show any you have that are missing.

Pictures and Posters Orioles
4 Attachment(s)
Good evening. Another post. Thought to share some recent finds.
The grand slam cardboard poster was published the year after McNalley's WS GS. It is not perfect and has the writing on the bottom but will look good framed. On the backside, the Oakland As hand wrote the lockerroom plan on it. I am told the "Charge" poster is from 1966. It is a paper poster. I plan to frame it. I just love the "National Beer" advertisement and purple. The "leap" autograph BW picture came from a long term Oriole employee. I had it authenticated. It is 8.5 x 11. Would love to had this in "orange" sharpie...I guess i settled. By far, this is one of my favorite pictures. The final picture is a bit larger and on a "board" featuring the Ripken's with autos. It came from the same estate mentioned above. I plan to frame this one, too. Hope you enjoy. Show your favorites. |

Anyways I know the photographer that took this picture and I reached out to him to see if he knew who that guy was...He told me it was taken on Family Day in '87 and there were a lot of people on the field that day & most likely this was someone related to one of the players... |

Pete Ward
1 Attachment(s)
Good afternoon,
I just saw the news that Pete Ward passed away. After playing 8 games for the O's in 1962, he was part of the trade that brought Luis Aparicio to Baltimore (may have been tough coming up in the Baltimore system as a third baseman at the time, obviously the Orioles tried him in the outfield). He was also extremely friendly both times I met him. RIP Attachment 507668 |

All Star Pennants Featuring Brooks Robinson
1 Attachment(s)
Good evening! Found another pennant this weekend featuring Brooks as an All Star. The 1962 Pennant at top is the latest "find." I have a total of 6 now. My research says there are 13 with his name on it between 1962 - 1974. I am not seeing his name on 1960 and 1961, which included 2 games each year. 1962 had two games as well but am only seeing Brooks on 1 pennant in 1962. My other Pennants featuring Brooks are provided in the picture. In search of 1963, 1964, 1967, 1968, 1969, 1973 and 1974. If anyone has anything in the years mentioned, let me know.

The news hit earlier this afternoon that Tommy Davis had unfortunately passed away. As most Orioles fans know he was their first DH and played for them for four seasons (hitting .291 with a .327 OBP).
Here is a signed game used cap of his during his tenure in Baltimore: https://i.imgur.com/9Rd9Nad.jpghttps://i.imgur.com/hJ9IAiS.jpg |
Hard to believe that 40 years ago today Cal Ripken Jr. homered on his first AB of the season off the Royals' Dennis Leonard for his first career HR.
In 1983 the Orioles had a calendar giveaway & this photo was used for one of the months. Fortunately I was able to have it signed by both Jr. & Sr. (as an aside, I've always wondered what was going through their heads when this handshake took place): https://i.imgur.com/9mcTKHM.jpg |

Jim Palmer retirement presentation book

Good afternoon,
I recently acquired from Jim Palmer's ex-wife a leather-bound book that was presented to him by the Orioles when he retired. The calligraphy in the book is all hand drawn and the entire book is made to look like a medieval manuscript. It includes his World Series and LCS stats, as well a listing of the dates and his line from each of his 268 regular season wins. Attachment 514901 Attachment 514902 Attachment 514903 |

1957 Phoenix Stars

I know some of you have enjoyed me sharing some of my Orioles minor league collection.
I just picked up a 1957 Phoenix Stars program to put me one step closer to my goal. Beyond thrilled to have picked up a program that I thought was nearly impossible. It's a little stained, but have never seen another and couldn't pass it up. The Phoenix Stars were an Orioles class C affiliate in the Arizona-Mexican League from 1956-1957. The 1957 team finished 89-48 and averaged about 1100 fans per game. The team featured future Orioles Gordin Sundin and Barry Shetrone, but the big name on the roster was young Cal Ripken Sr. 1957 Phoenix Stars program Attachment 517952 Attachment 517957 Stars players Barry Shetrone, Gordin Sundin and Dick Santaniello Attachment 517954 Attachment 517955 Attachment 517956 For anyone interested, here's my current wantlist of Orioles affiliates programs.
