Thank you. I always felt bad for the catcher...I'm sure his parents would have preferred it if they let him pose with the mask on top of his head.

This D381 of Richard Egan is a long time participant on this board, but he has decided that now is the time to haunt this thread.

Biz Mackey's only period card.

This has been ID'd by some Negro League historians as Mackey on the left and possibly from the California League in the 1920s. Others vehemently deny it is Mackey. Whatever, I like it. |

I've shown this before, but I love it, so I'll show it again.
In 1909 the University of Wisconsin sent their baseball team to Japan to play against Keio, Waseda, and other University teams. (There was no pro ball in Japan at the time.) Postcards were made to commemorate the occasion. This particular card shows the beginning of the first game of the tour. What's special about it is that it was mailed by Charles "Peck" Nash, who pitched most of the tour for Wisconsin. He's asking one of his friends back home to take notes in class for him, because they're not going to get back from Japan until after the semester starts. |

The "problem" with this thread is that you only get one a day and sometimes other people's posts prompt several different cards you want to share. However, since Plow Boy is outnumbering Plow's Candy two-to-one, I thought I would even things out today and save the other cards for another day.

Duffy Lewis
1 Attachment(s)
He was part of Boston's "million dollar outfield" and was so admired for his defense playing in front of the Green Monster, that the incline leading up to the wall in left field became known as "Duffy's Cliff". But here he is shown playing for the Washington Senators. He got 114 plate appearances for Washington in 1921.

Another day, another tough choice. But since Kawika posted a Spider Baum Zeenut (I love Zeenuts with tabs) here is another Spider Baum Zeenut (1911, before tabs were on on the cards). I always thought Baum was just another guy but this thread prompted me to do some research. He was a career minor leaguer but since his career was so long, according to VCP he appeared in 18 different sets (all featuring PCL players). Any thoughts on whether that is a record for someone who never played in the majors?
He is actually HOFer Spider Baum (the Pacific Coast League Hall of Fame, that is) having won 267 in his 15 seasons in the league. More info can be found in the usual places (baseball-reference.com and Wikipedia). |

Nice Baum's. I collect PCL HOF'ers. I'm not sure why. I have no connection to the area but I just really find the early history of that league interesting. Here's one of my favorites:

Chick Gandil
1 Attachment(s)
Gandil played 9 MLB seasons, four with Washington and four with the Chicago White Sox. He was a good player for Washington, posting a .344 OBP with 91 stolen bases, while averaging more than 560 plate appearances per season. His four years in Chicago were significantly less productive, although he was the starting first baseman on the 1917 World Series championship team. In MLB history, however, he is forever remembered as a key member of the Chicago Black Sox. We find him here showcased as a Washington Senator.

Another tragic end. Robert Unglaub died in 1916 when a trains cargo box fell off and smashed him while he worked his side job. He was the player/ manager for the Fargo Graingrowers at the time.
