Orioles Photos

I'm really enjoying all the items people are posting so far. It's always fun to see stuff you don't have in your personal collection and hear the stories behind them.
One of my passions is the history of the Orioles franchise from 1954 to present. I know some of you also collect stuff from the minor league Orioles before 1954 which is also very interesting. I guess the main reason, I've avoided collecting minor league Orioles items, is that the roots of the current Orioles team come through the St. Louis Browns franchise. I believe at least a couple of the old Orioles teams can be traced forward to the current Yankees and Detroit Tigers franchises. Maybe someday, I'll get the itch to expand my collection to the Browns. That passion for history has led me to collect photos of every player to ever appear in an Orioles game, but they must be pictured in an Orioles uniform. There are a couple players I still need to find. Wally Westlake 1955 (I know a photo of him exists) John Buzhardt 1967 (Many photos as an Astro or White Sox, but have never seen an Oriole photo) I thought some of you might enjoy a challenge. Over the next few days, I'll post pics of some Orioles and let you try and identify them. Hint: All of these players have appeared for at least one major league game with the Orioles. Hint #2: They all have something in common when they played for the Orioles. Some will be easier than others. I hope you have fun. Day 14 (January 14, 2020 – 014)
I really don’t have very many original photos (Type 1) of Brooks. I have a pretty good amount that are from the original negative but are not period and have a bunch of wire photos as well. This particular photograph is an original Brooks photo that was sent to me by Bob (commishbob); how awesome is that (thanks again Bob!). It was taken by one of The Baltimore Sun photographers William LaForce Jr. I really like the picture of Brooks on deck and the Stadium in the background. Attachment 381298 By the way Bob has a great blog entitled “The Five Tool Collector”; check it out if you haven’t already. |

1962 Salada Brooks question
2 Attachment(s)
Hi, I have a couple of questions for the fellow O's collectors on here:
1.) I am no expert on the 1962 Salada coins but there seems to be at least a few viewing this thread. A few years ago, I purchased the basic complete set. The seller threw in a couple of additional coins. One is a Brooks Robinson with a white rim. All other Brooks coins I've seen are the standard orange rim. Googling has yielded no other info, so I've always assumed the coin was altered. Does anyone know exactly what this is? 2.) In one of my Orioles-related magazines from 1983 or 1984, there is an ad for All Star Toyota stating that if you come in to test drive a car, you'll receive Orioles baseball cards. Has anyone heard of that promotion before? Were they handing out specially made cards or just 1983 Topps/Fleer/Donruss cards? I searched for the magazine last night to take a photo but couldn't find it. I'll definitely looks again but hope someone has information on it. Thanks for the help! |

I have a run of yearbooks 1954 - 2000 but the Hartzell covers are my favorites. James Hartzell drew the first Orioles cartoon bird. I also have a run of team signed balls from 1954 - 1990. Pictured are some key Orioles baseballs with the '54 and '55 (bottom row starting on the left) having two players, Howie Fox and Tom Gastall who died during their playing days. In 1955, Fox was stabbed to death in a bar room incident and in 1956 Gastall crashed a small plane into the Chesapeake. The metal Orioles Route sign hung outside Memorial Stadium and came from the City of Baltimore. The Mezzanine sign hung inside the stadium. |

This one doesn't show up often on Ebay or at card shows. It was used as a coupon (save .70 cents) for a baseball so not many survived.

[QUOTE=BaltOrioles;1946989]All of the Orioles from the Salada and Shirriff coin sets were originally issued in orange. It is fairly easy to swap out the paper inserts with another color if the plastic on the original coin is damaged. It is also easy to swap Salada and Shirriff coins. There is a post earlier that says which coins were issued with each type back.
Thank you Alan. I went back, found, and saved your original post on the subject. I appreciate the information, Mike |

Sports Collectors Digest, from January 15, 1979 picturing Brooks at a night game; very cool pose and angle by the photographer. This is the same pose used on a local baseball card set put out in the Baltimore area called, “Pictures of Champions”; a small card set of some of the Orioles players. I agree. Orioles70, those are some nice seldom seen items. Is the 1974 Deckle the white back or gray back version? Thanks to Mark a couple years ago, I have the gray back. White backs are a little tougher. The Brooks photo may be his first team issued 8x10 photo. It's dated 1957 on the back, so I guess there's a possibility of a photo printed in 1955 or 56. I know the early team issued Brooks stuff doesn't show up very often. |

Day 16 (January 16, 2020 – 016)
Alan (BaltOrioles) is the expert on basically everything Orioles related (programs to include minor league, picture packs, postcards, team issue photos…well, you get the drift; “everything”. In fact it’s even rumored that he was a ball player for a minor league Orioles team. Well, he’s been very generous and helpful when it comes to Orioles items and sent me the two following team issue postcards. They are a 1977 team issue postcard (less green on the bottom right) and a 1978 team issue postcard (more green bottom right). At the time I didn’t even know there was a difference. 1977 Postcard Attachment 381509 1978 Postcard Attachment 381510 |

Most Brooks collectors have seen this photo of Brooks & Mickey Mantle from 1964 game action and there always was a fun debate whether the Mick was actually safe or out.
Here is that photo signed by both: https://i.imgur.com/blCI6dS.jpg And here is an AP press photo (watermark removed on my copy) taken about a second later showing that Mantle was indeed safe: https://i.imgur.com/MEe0IDD.jpg |

Thanks for the kind words. I can't believe all the great items that people are posting. I'm out west visiting the granchildren for a week, so my posts will be a little sporadic. I'll save the minor league story for another time. For those interested, Mark correctly identified Jonathan Villar as the most recent Orioles player to hit for the cycle. The other two are Aubrey Huff and Felix Pie. |

Man, love your collection of items. I've been debating, pretty much since I've been collecting, to pick up or not pick up the 1964 Rawlings glove box cutout. I've had the opportunity to purchase a few times over the years, but never acquired one. Really don't know why specifically, but I sure like the one you have. I guess they all have some type of issue with the corner of the cutout since it was near the Rawlings glove box end. Also, of course I don't have the glove box... |

Day 17 (January 17, 2020 – 017)
Brooks has quite a few figurines and there are several using the same pose from the ’70 World Series, Game 3, when Brooks dove to his left to stab a liner off of Johnny Bench. This piece is a 1993 Salvino cold cast porcelain figurine with Brooks’ autograph; believe they were /1000. This really is one of the nicer figurines of Brooks; looks cool on the shelf. I think they used some great looking photographs on the front of Baseball Magazine. The photo of Brooks from 1964 is a such a nice pose, plus you have the BLOCK letter ORIOLES with the Star-Spangled Banner Sesquicentennial patch. I might be in the minority, but I really liked all the Oriole uniforms back in the day to include the caps. The block letters were just a nice change and alternative in my view. |

You guys do know that I'm trying to do a Brooks Robinson and the Baltimore Orioles thread for the YEAR? Should it end in January with all the great, rare and interesting stuff being pictured this month... ;) |
Back in the 1960's when colleges would order bats from Hillerich & Bradsby, not only the colleges name would be on the barrel but the the facsimile signature of one of their players under contract would appear as well.
I mentioned earlier that we gave my youngest son the middle name of Brooks and when I saw on eBay one of those bats (early 60's labeling period) from the college he recently graduated from with Brooks as the player on it, it was a no brainer to grab it. We went down to a appearance at a shop in Baltimore to have it signed: https://i.imgur.com/shKhoZ7.jpg https://i.imgur.com/uZqFgHy.jpg |
Mark
The thread might not go 365 days...Who Cares! It's hard to hold back and post just one item! I love what I am seeing. It's just going to get better and better as collectors dig deep into their collections. I liked the magazine covers today especially all the unopened wax and boxes in the background. |
Really nice items guys. Love the Palmer uniform, the Bazookas are great, classic Brooks World Series dive and the vintage signature style bat is awesome.

Most of us are familiar with the Jays Publishing Co. 5x7 photo packs issued from 1957-1965. These are not to be confused with the team issued photo packs sold at the stadium during the 60's, although they look similar in many ways.
In 1958, Jays issued two different photo packs of 12 Orioles. The more common group contain Bob Boyd, Jim Busby, Billy Gardner, Connie Johnson, Billy Loes, Willy Miranda, Bob Nieman, Billy O'Dell, Al Pilarcik, Paul Richards, Gus Triandos and George Zuverink. In the second group, Boyd, Busby and Loes were replaced with Jack Harshman, Arnold Portocarrero and Brooks Robinson. The other nine players remained the same, although there were some slight cropping differences. This second pack with Brooks seems much harder to find. Here is the Brooks Robinson Attachment 381612 Here's an example of the cropping differences between the first and second packs. Most noticeable by the name placement and uniform neckline. I am guessing the unopened packs in the boxes are put together by yourself and the boxes are stuffed so they appear to be filled . Right ? If you tell me they are all real and full .... I am speechless. It is a great display I love wrappers and boxes. Don’t have much In my collection but the art, colors and graphics on the old Topps products are beautiful. I am sure the photos don’t do it justice. It must display great in person I am jealous !!!
