You are right on Anson's tail Larry.

Three somewhat tougher cards in the past few days with Graham, Seigle, and Bescher for an 8-point bump to 129. Graham is laminated but with that card, you take what you can get.
|
Is this Speaker the same one that just sold via PWCC in raw form? It looks very similar.
Tedzan’s post from 2017. Ted if you’re still around would you confirm? Quote:

Only a one-card addition here but it's a tough one in the Dots Miller sunset variation. Would love to know where these are all hiding. I may have missed one or two but I've seen only one for sale in more than a year. I've had a very tough time finding one.
Up to 132 now and my goal of getting to 100 cards by the end of the year now seems reasonable. |
Drought is over
The Kraken at my house was dried up for a few months. The Kraken tricks and lulls one to sleep, it’s part of the evil.
But it has taken on water today...OBC Secret Santa Andy H. (Cobbspikedme) mailed a VERY generous Art Fromme for the holidays. It’s a plus one for my Kraken number but it’s a multiple thumbs up for a great guy! Thanks Andy! I’m going harder after this Kraken Monster in 2020 based on this inspiration! |
Re: Kraken
I picked up the lot in the recent Lelands auction. It had the Keeler-throwing, leaving me needing Jackson, both Wagners and Young-Cleveland. I have almost 100 duplicates and hope to upload my updated website over the weekend. Will offer a discount to my fellow Krakenites. Stay tuned...

Ed, looking forward to seeing what dupes you might have!
And, Brian, for my overall Kraken number, please bump to 137 when time permits. Got this Cobb in the recent REA auction. |
Just finished my 520 version of the monster so joining the insanity with 3 in the collection! Looking for mid grade PSA cards if anyone has any they'd like to move. PM if you have any you're looking to move!

Troy,
Glad to see another Kraken victim. I see that you have chops since you've done so well against the Monster! BP, please if you may add yet another Kraken point to my total. This Marquard entered the gloom today. It looks like a nice round number of 160. |
Cobb for Anson
Anson,
I nearly missed your post ( I scrolled too fast) What an awesome pickup w/Cobb! Nice job my friend. You're really Kraken now! |

Cap, sweet Cobb pickup man, nice job on that one.
Brian, that Marquard is great bro. That was the e90 that got me started on the Kraken years ago. It's been slow going for me, but I'm slowly taking my hits at the beast when I can. AndyH |
Take your time, my friend - it's a race, not a sprint!

Andy,
You may be going the wrong way on your Kraken count. Everybody...see post #247 to see what I mean :D:D The secret’s out :p I’m still awestruck by your generosity Thank you again! |
Nice pickups Brian, Ed and Anson, and welcome to the fray Troy. Consider everyone updated!
Brian |
After Secret Santa, my count has been elevated to 1! ;) Not a grand sum, but in the interest of completeness...

Big Move
1 Attachment(s)
Kraken Krazies,
I made a big move this week. Large gratitudes to board member William C. for working out a deal on 5 more cards equaling 19 (Hey Nineteen!) Kraken points!! Brian, please boost your records up to 179 for me. It'll be tough sledding to get much further but I have a few more that wont be too bad. The Kraken wants us to quit. I'm not going to:cool: With apologies for the lousy picture, it's still better than none. Mitchell, Gibson, Stone, Willis and Clarke are now joining the others. |
Awesome stuff, Brian - congrats!

The progenitor of this thread gets tagged for 179! Brian |
I added four more cards and am up to 124 thank's to Ed Hans but that's a long way from the two Brian's.
|
124 it is Larry. To join the Brians, you either have to legally change your name, or add more E90-1 cards to your collection.
I think the second choice is more fun and involves less paperwork. Brian |

Delivery coming on another big one. And a medium too.
I’m so close to my goal of 200 ish. I’ve no desire to buy the Joe Jax or two Wagner cards. (The throwing Card is nearly as unattractive as the Cy Young Cleveland card that I got last year) Maybe the batting pose some day... Anywho, I’ll scan them after they arrive and then ask our venerable scorekeeper for his mathematics... The Kraken is showing some cracks as I inch my way upwards. |
Must be fun to await a big and medium chunk of the Kraken. Congrats on blowing past us mere mortals.

The Calamari Bake
1 Attachment(s)
I was able to add a baker's dozen points to the Calamari quest to beat the Kraken.
My scanner remains out of commission for a bit longer but I wanted to post my update, so I took a cell phone pic. Not pictured, but revered is the Bob Bescher I picked up from Ed Hans. Yep, Ed Hans made me a great deal on the Bob Bescher E90-1 that I added to my stack. I sent small money, and Ed Hans sent a big 3 pt card. Vote Ed Hans! The pictured card is the 10 pointer. Almost no way to get this card for small money. But knocking Tris Speaker off the list is worth it. Oh Tally Man, please put my total at 192. Its been a fun ride! |
still at 9 but one of them is the overall so I guess that puts me at 11 points? Slow but steady!!
|
Re: Kraken
Thanks for the shout out, Brian. Not sure I'd have sold it to you if i had known it'd put you that close to me. :) Still have quite a few left from the recent Lelands lot.

I think Ed has helped a lot of folk in their E-Monster quest...Larry's Kraken # gets another boost.

I, too, have completed the T206 monster. I find this set more challenging. Never seen so many "tough cards" in a relatively small set. Looking forward to the challenge.
|
Being a newbie to this set, why is Overall a tough card? Presently there are nine for sale on eBay.
|
Popular
One thing about this set to consider is that some of the "tough" cards can be deceiving. You do see a handful of tough cards for sale on occasion because people are constantly starting/stopping the pursuit of the set.
If you give up on a set, you may be able to break even quickly by liquidating the tougher cards like Upp/Mitchell/Sweeney or the aforementioned Overall. 9 of a card at any given time doesn't seem too populous. Sometimes that number might dip to 2. And let's give this thread some credit for creating demand which may bring out both sellers and buyers :-) |
Overall is a fringe 3 point card that mainly got in due to its past reputation as a tough card. Believe it or not I came up with the list without using 3rd party grading pop reports, but just off my observation, and suggestions of the Net54 community. If I were to redo list with a 2 point category, which at this point I am not going to do as it would cause too much disruption and would make it unwieldly for folks to keep track, I would put it in that grouping, as it definitely a card that is tougher to come by than the commons in the set.
Perhaps I will post a theoretical 2 point group at some point for the heck of it. Brian |
Thanks, Brian. I didn't know the history of the card.
|
Just got this little gem. It is a Lobert with three printers marks. Left side and tip are faint but right side is beautiful!

I picked up Big Ed a little bit ago.

This card got me to 198 Krakens, where I'll sit tight for a bit. |
Nice looking Walsh

Congrats Brian. I always like that Big Ed card.

I always thought the Walsh E90-1 card could easily be a part of the E90-3 set, not only because Walsh is a Chicago White Sox player, but the art and throwing pose fits right in with the E90-3 set. Even his E90-3 card is very similar...check it out below.
Consider Brian 198 and eventually counting... Brian (not my card) |

Man, haven't updated my Kraken number in a while. But five pickups this year (Wagner Throwing, Mike Mitchell, Matty, Baker, and Chance) add 23 points to my total. Bump to 160 requested. With 104 cards now, getting closer.
Here's the most recent pickup, Wagner, which came in today's mail. |
23 points is quite a boost, and even if Wagner could only muster a 'who cares' look when tossing the ball, still an impressive pickup Anson. A card or two more and you will zoom past me.
Brian |
Picked up these plus some other commons for a total of 12 points. Raise my grand total to 95. Thanks.

Nice pickup Tony on the Sweeney, and all of the 3 cards are tougher one pointers. 100 points on the E-Scale is easily within striking distance.
Brian |
Brian, Picked these up plus 2 other commons for a total of 13 points. Please put me me down at 108 points.

Nice...triple digits plus for you.
Brian |
I just posted in another thread a comparison of perceived scarcities/valuation of this E-Monster, both now, as seen in this Kraken thread, versus what is listed in a 1982 price guide.
https://www.net54baseball.com/showth...96#post1978796 Also of note, in that other thread I mention what cards I believe, if I were to redo the rankings as seen in this thread (I'm not going to!), would rank as '2' on the Kraken list. Brian |
I thought I'd contribute to this thread. I am really thinking about collecting this set again. To me the artwork is excellent and pretty much on par with T206's. The images have some great variety with different portraits and action shots.
The player selection is excellent, as a few of the major HOF's not in the T206 (or completely out of reach for most people..cough..wagner and plank..cough) are in here. Just one Cobb instead of four. The set is 120 cards vs 520. The only really downside is it's an expensive set (at least for me) but, I suppose for somebody that wants to take their time and chip away at it and buy cards at the right price, it's an achievable set. Just looking at this thread at some of the cards posted with the beautiful artwork has me debating to get back into this! |
Brian, Add these cards plus one other common for 9 points to my number which should be 117. Thanks.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...7412b6d6_k.jpgE90-1Walsh by Tony Biviano, on Flickr |
If I were to ever pick up the Walsh for my E90-1 collection, that would be exactly how I would imagine it would look like (which is fantastic in my eyes).

Keeping the Kraken alive!
Tony!
You are doing great on your Kraken quest! Many of us have stalled out but you're still climbing. I think the key is to drive up this hill in low gear. I'd still like to get a couple more hits this year. Way to go Tony! |
Thanks, guys. I am new to this set. I will join you guys sooner or later. Have a lot of commons to pick up so it will be slow
|
Any Walsh is a good Walsh...

The monster achievement by Ryan on the Monster thread inspired me to post a Kraken card on this thread so that folks who have been crackin' away on the set would post. Inquiring minds, such as Summers here, want to know your Kraken number.

Official mascot of this thread
Hopefully this collaboration thread , sharing your progress on collecting the greatest Caramel set will be inspired by the official announcement of the Seattle NHL franchise.
They will be known as The Kraken. And we helped, I'm sure of it! |
Thanks Brian for pointing out this great E90-1 news! I started this thread in November of 2017, and the 2018 Post It note, as mentioned in this article
https://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/...-became-kraken makes if fairly clear that the world/Seattle/hockey nuts were following this thread. Brian (they should have called the team the E-Monsters) |
Some of these so called commons are near impossible to find

I thought y'all were joking. They named their team after this thread, or they really liked the 1981 1 star movie, "Clash of the Titans". Here's an e90-1 Fromme that I have. A tougher card, with a print anomaly going on on the left border.
