Not exactly sure. They are factory cut tabs (and the ones on the left and right are missing). My guess is that folded into a panel on the back so that it could stand up. But if anyone knows for sure or has another idea please let me know!

Disclaimer - this assumes I can find it. I found a scan and don't remember selling it, so it's probably around here somewhere.

After having this stock certificate in my "stuff" for 20+ years, I recently gave it a new lookover while listing it on eBay.

Note that the certificate is issued to Geo. Bresich; it is also pencil-endorsed by him on the back.

I wonder if this is the Breisch from E107 hobby fame? Is the Geo. Williams who signed on front as secretary the guy from Breisch-Williams and Williams Caramel Co.? Bresich was also once in the candy business with Walter Hiune, who signed this certificate as treasurer.

More than likely it is the same George Breisch.

Quote:

The Breisch of Breisch-Williams was George Breisch. He is listed as a Confectioner as early as 1890 in Philadelphia. His father Frederick Breisch, from Germany, was also a candy maker, and his brother, Frederick, was also involved as either a partner or employee of the company. Later their company would be merged with the American Caramel Co.

Ah this is the perfect thread for someone to maybe answer a question I have. I was at an antique shop this past weekend, and saw four of these piedmont wooden folding chairs. (the back was the piedmont sign made of porcelain). I was wondering if anyone had seen these before and if there was any story behind them, because they were all selling for a pretty penny.

Your top photo centerpiece appears to be the 12 pages of the 1888 Goodwin Champions (A36) album mounted and framed....or,
is it an original 19th Century poster of the A36's pages ?

However, I have mixed feelings about cutting out the 12 pages and mounting them. This album is one of my favorite

The album was destressed or I wouldn't have taken it apart and framed it. It's intact except the binder strips have been removed. I worked some excess paper from a few surfaces and that's about it. I think it makes for a great display and imagine my framed albums will be some of the last things I let go of. To me they nicely express my "tobacco as art" philosophy....
The albums are more like books and as such are difficult to appreciate as the content is visual not written. They also tend to be expensive and fragile. One can of course take pictures or scans and leave the album on a shelf but then why have the album at all - just get the pictures which one could procure in a few places. A whole 'nother story I suppose.
That being said I must confess to owning a fair number of other albums - perhaps not as "desireable" as the different champion albums but no less works of art and they languish in a box unappreciated. I have not an inch of room to hang anything more (a hat and my wife come to mind) and it is of course cost prohibitive to frame them.
I do have 2 nicer copies of the Goodwin Champions (one to trade I suppose) and only once before getting this one did I consider using one of them. My view is that these have survived many years and many hands because of their beauty. Like everything we collect we are just temporary keepers - caretakers if you will for a near finite amount of time. I try and keep things in the condition in which I received them and strive to maintain the integrety until they pass to the next person's hands.

canjond 09-07-2014 03:08 PM

Here are some packs from the collection. A couple rare one in the mix - one of only a handful of Drums (this one has a 1910 tax stamp on the reverse), and the only known Hindu that matches the advertisements, albeit the front of the back has been trimmed down long ago by an early scrapbooker. Also one of only 2 Red Sun packs I've seen (this one has been flattened).

Thought I'd rekindle this thread with a cabinet photo "The Pennant" billiard hall/cigar store in Tacoma, WA, circa 1915, with some very drool-worthy Tuxedo ad pieces on display, along with a pennant above the doorway commemorating the very good 1915 South Tacoma Tigers championship semi-pro team.

*WOW*...amazing photo.

1880nonsports 11-04-2014 11:16 PM

super photo!

I actually have a few combined tobacco store/billiard parlor photos as it wasn't uncommon to combine the two enterprises but that's really a spectacular window display - not really the actual display as it's a bit pedestrian as store windows go - but the fruit it bears when viewed today. Same with the other side of the store - a common Omar sign with some packs glued to it. Interesting that the picture has smalltown USA written all over it - but as advertising was expensive to produce and distribute and a dedicated display was typically intended for larger cities - curious as to what the population and industry of Tacoma was like in that period?

3-2-count 11-05-2014 06:09 AM

Very large cabinet photo of a Piedmont booth at some sort of tobacco convention.

That's a great Hassan piece. Usually their advertising was more heavy-handed and this one quite different - subdued and sentimental. Very nice.
There are books that were printed often with the title "exposition" in the 1890's and forward that would feature photographs of various display booths at these things - ostensibly the larger shows. They are usually quite pricey - at least based on the 3/4 I've seen. They can also be found on printed and real photo postcards. Having a mounted photo is more interesting to me - but they too are so infrequently encountered. The display from the Ginter company replicated in the 1893 Paris Exposition tobacco album must have been spectacular based on the representation.
