Picked this up at the beginning of the month....at an estate sale from a former MLB player....probably headed to auction in the future....only have seen 2 others signed on a ball.
|
Don't know what it is exactly but it was expensive:
https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/HuMAA...iU/s-l1600.jpg I suspect it is from a set that I've not been able to catalog but that has a Fitzsimmons that I've known of for years. |
More info on McGovern:
The card arrived today. It is machine-cut, measuring exactly 1.5" across and 2.25" tall. Blank back and thick cardboard. Similar to a Mayo in thickness. I thought it was a half-tone print but under magnification it is photo-engraved, which indicates it was created some time around the turn of the 20th century. Makes sense since McGovern's career ended in 1908. |

Picked this up after it was graded. It ended up a PSA 5.5. Looked 6ish to me, but I'm happy with it.

1922 exhibit - Johnny Red Dolan
2 Attachment(s)
Not my wheelhouse but anything this old is worth the pickup... Anyone familiar with these and how rare (or not) they may be?
Thanks! |
I cover all the Exhibit cards in my book. The 1922 set is tougher than 1921, easier than 1923.
|
I got one PC recently:
https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...eeney%20PC.jpg This kind of single event PC is like pizza to me: can't resist it. Checks all the boxes: --Vintage --Rare --HOFer depicted |

This just came in the mail. No idea who they are, but what a cool image. From 1904.

Maybe I overpaid but I don't care. Collect what you like, right?
Very happy with this pickup. |

Meet Eddie Booker:
https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/Bm8AA...bO/s-l1600.jpg A recent HOF inductee, he has no cards, promos or other memorabilia to speak of, so I had to go after this photo for my HOFer set. |
Oh, and a 1948 Leaf SRR white back in nm-mt is never a wrong buy. Now you need to get the red glove variation to match it!
https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...nson%20red.jpg |
Thanks Adam & Eddie! I'd been looking for the right example for awhile, but still keeping an eye out for the red version.
|
Here's a fun one, an oversized PC from Louis-Walcott. Haven't seen one of these ever before:

Tickled to pick this up from Mile High

Looks like a higher grade set - all in at $205. I've always liked this deck; interest has certainly waned.

Love that set. Great price. That's my absolute favorite Jack Johnson card from a purely aesthetic standpoint. |
Does it have the pamphlet?

They almost ever do. I wanted to get a good look at one.

Mike Tyson Autographed Rookie
1 Attachment(s)
I just got this back from PSA. I purchased it raw a few years ago and totally forgot about it. :) I thought it was a NM-MT card and was surprised it came back a 6 EX-MT. I then spotted a TINY ding on the bottom right corner that is mostly visible on the back. I probably missed it before sending it in. Oh well, I'm still happy with it.
|
A signed Tyson RC? Nicely done.

Can someone explain why PSA sometimes will assign the card but not the auto a grade, and other times grade both? Is it a matter of what you ask for?
|
Quote:
1. TYPE OF SUBMISSION: Grading Review Crossover (one type per submission) 2. TYPE OF GRADING: Card Autograph or No Grade (authentic only; card and autograph) If you just want the card graded, but not the autograph, then you would just check the first box. |

I wasn't really doing raw wrestling cards but I've seen so few of these Shawn Michaels 1989 Market Square rookies that I figured I'd better jump on it. I figure I could either submit it myself or hang onto it until a graded one surfaces. With only six graded by PSA, though, I may be waiting a while if I don't slab this one :)

Just picked up this sweet red backed E79 for a steal. Almost got the Attell but missed out on that one.
|
Nice! I guess the seller missed it.
|
Seller totally missed them. No mention of the red back on any of the three. The Attell was even mislabeled as an E77 in the listing.
|
There were more than 3, there were 6 of them including a Jeffries and a Jack Johnson vs Cole... SGC should have also labeled them with Red Back as well. Great pick up! The Red Back E79's are really tough!!!
|
Really, there were 6 of them. How did I miss the other three! Oh well. I'm happy with the one I got.
Does SGC ever label them as red backed or no? I agree they should if they are so tough. |
Fantasy Card
1 Attachment(s)
I have never been interested in reprints, but some of the fantasy cards are pretty compelling. Like this 1948 Leaf Ali.
Edit: The scanner caused the imperfection on the right edge. Card is cut perfectly square. |
I like that Ali Jerry. Is it by a major company, or is it a one of a kind fantasy piece?

I've been searching for this item for many years:
http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...%20Dempsey.jpg H815 Adam Hats Jack Dempsey. I figured one had to exist because he was part of their celebrity matchbook promotion and the other sports subjects in that issue have cards. |
Doesn't he look like he should be holding a machine gun? He really looks like a mobster in that photo. :D Oh, love the card by the way!

Over the last 27 years I have opened hundreds of packs and browsed through countless thousands of other 1991 Kayo cards. I have never, ever seen one of the alleged autographed insert cards until now:
https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...ure%20Card.jpg |
Quote:
Wow, that's a new one on me. I've probably opened at least a couple cases worth of these, have sold several cases worth of single boxes and have a couple cases put away and have always been suspicious that these never even existed. I've told people straight out, you're not going to get a signed card in this box, regardless what is says in the advertising on the box. |
And I would keep on telling them that, Dave.

Would be curious to know if any others have ever popped up. Must be Powerball type odds pulling one of these cards. |
The only reference I can find to the signature cards is on Jeff Allender's checklist site, where he checklists a red bordered Arguello. Since it references the border color difference I think the report of the Arguello is credible. Allender claims (without foundation) that the insertion ratio is 1:2160 packs, but is "reportedly scarcer." Yeah, no $hit, Sherlock. A total of two cards identified in the hobby over 27 years is definitely scarcer than one every 60 boxes (5 cases). I'm thinking that finding one is more akin to this scenario:
https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...a%20ticket.jpg As I recall from reading Shark Tank, when Upper Deck invented the signed insert around this time, the executive who came up with it was inspired by Willie Wonka and wanted it to be like pulling a golden ticket. If Kayo followed suit, the cards may be unique. We didn't really start thinking about larger hit counts until years later. |
So Adam under what circumstances did you come across this one?
|
I can personally vouch for opening 10+ boxes, and not getting any auto cards.
Seriously, 80-90 percent of the print run probably remains unopened. Does anyone have any contacts to reach Williams and ask him the number of cards he signed? |

This article states "So far, more than 250 million First Round cards have been printed and distributed..."
https://www.thefreelibrary.com/Kayo+...ena-a011423282 |
Quote:
Yeah, it's a typical early 90's overproduction run. Totally over-estimated the market for boxing cards. Similar story with AW (All World) the same year. Differences in distribution. It seems AW produced way less unopened product and way more factory sets, and Kayo stuck to mainly the unopened product, while creating less factory sets. 5 years later Ringside was a lot more savvy and sophisticated with it's release, and was much more transparent with it's chase card, autograph insert strategy. Still overproduced but not quite to the extent of the 91' releases. I'm not sure of the full autograph insert list for this set. I don't think it's exactly a remarkable line-up of boxers, but at least they are attainable. Still not successful enough to carry over into another series of cards until the modern day lineup of hobby boxes started coming out with much more limited distribution. |
Where did I get Arguello? Brain fart...
OK, each case has 14 x 36 x 12 cards = 6,048. That's 41,336 cases if the 250 million # is used. If the signed cards are 1 per 5 cases, that would be 8,267 signed cards. Surely more than two would have shown up in 27 years. I don't buy the production numbers. That's a million of each card. At its worst in the junk wax era, Topps was reported to have made 5 million of each card. A fifth of Topps's max run for a minor sport and a first effort? I also have to wonder how many were destroyed rather than saved for decades. |

T218 Goodman

Picked up a high grade T218 Goodman. His record on the back is not very good, but high grade T218's are neat. I'm back into boxing cards because the price is right.

T218 is my favorite T set in any sport. The art just cannot be beaten.
