I posted hits once before but was thinking about Greinke since with the season ending I'm wondering if he has pitched his last game.
Looking up the date of this game I discovered it was also the game that Reggie Jackson's number was retired for the A's. It was also the A's 3000th win as the Oakland A's. (Obviously they played in Philadelphia and KC before moving to Oakland.) |

Great stuff as always, Jeff!
As you already know, I won this lineup card in Lelands last night, and at a great price. I think it slid under the radar. |

I picked up my first line-up card in a mixed lot of collectibles a little while ago. It's from the Pirates in April 1976.

9/10/1951 Yankees lineup card
Features a rookie Mickey Mantle in right field playing next to Joe DiMaggio in the latter's 10th to last (regular season) game. One of 3 Mantle/DiMaggio lineup cards from 1951 known to still exist. |

Sometimes you go into a game knowing it could be important. Maybe it is the debut of a highly touted prospect. Or it is the final game of the season with playoff implications
Other times you don't know before, but you figure it out during the game. Maybe a big star gets 4 home runs, or a pitcher pitches a no-hitter. Other times, the significance of a moment is only noticable some time later. On August 22, 2023, Mike Trout returned from injury. He played one game and returned to the injured list for the remainder of the season. At the end of the year, Shohei Ohtani signed with the Dodgers. The result is that this game represents the final time that Trout and Ohtani played together as teammates. Likely the final time their names will ever be penciled in on the same 'official batting order' card. |
Jeff, great Angels lineup card!
And the '51 Yanks ain't bad either :) |

Was flipping through some of my oldest lineup cards yesterday and decided to take them out and take a group picture.
Seeing them together is a reminder of how little regard they were given. Meant to be used and tossed. Today, 80-90 years later, the few that remained are generally worn, ripped, stapled, stained, dirty, faded etc. For me, they tell the story of baseball in a way that almost no other item can match. The player names, the substitutions, the manager's signature etc. All from in the action. Lineup cards in the photo range from 1933-1944. 4 are WOrld Series linup cards. Manager signatures include Walter Johnson, Connie Mack, Joe Cronin, Joe McCarthy, Bill Terry and Bucky Harris. Some prominent names include Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Stan Musial, Jummie Foxx, Lefty Grove, Earl Averill, Mel Ott, Ernie Lombardi, Leo Durocher and many others both remembered and forgotten. |

4/28/2001 Cardinals signed lineup card.
Pujols 8th career HR. He tied the rookie record for most homeruns in April (since surpassed by a number of players). Signed by Albert Pujols and Tony LaRussa. |
Here is the Rangers copy of their dugout lineup card from 09/23/21 when they visited Camden Yards.
It's a long story, but it took awhile for to arrive (the Orioles copy was never made available) however the game holds personal significance to me because my son performed the National Anthem (sax solo) that evening for the first time in a MLB park. I'm going to mat/frame it with a few photos and a ticket (yes, I was able to buy a physical ticket that night!) and will surprise him with it for an upcoming birthday: https://i.imgur.com/LlIOCsG.jpghttps://i.imgur.com/2By8y8V.jpghttps://i.imgur.com/ZK0Sxzx.jpghttps://i.imgur.com/QfRkDaX.jpg |

Nolan Ryan final career win #324 dugout card

I'm happy to have finally got around to completing a framed project that I've been thinking about.
Here is the original dugout card from HOF Nolan Ryan's last career win on 8/15/93 @ CLE at now defunct Municipal Stadium. Nolan signed and inscribed the dugout card 6-8 years ago. The snapshots were taken during Nolan's warmup prior to this game. Up on the wall above my desk where I can enjoy it every day. I love it! |

I was able to purchase a small collection (6 pieces) of 1960's Yankees lineup cards from the son of a former boxer who also did some security gigs. He sent me a picture of him and his Dad with Roger Maris.
The collection included these 3:

On May 31, 1938 the Yankees played the Red Sox at Yankee Stadium. The day after 81,000 showed up for a Yankees/Red Sox doubleheader, there were just 6,917 in attendance to see the Yankees beat the Red Sox 12-5. Tommy Henrich, Bill Dickey and Red Rolfe hit home runs for the Yankees. Jimmie Foxx hit a grandslam for the Red Sox. Joe DiMaggio had a 2B and 2 walks, and Lou Gehrig had one hit.
A small ceremony was held to celebrate Lou Gehrig's 2000th consecutive career game. Unlike by Ripken, where there was a number (Gehrig's 2130) to target, Gehrig had already blown past everyone by a long shot, and so 2000 was the major moment. (The person I purchased this from chose to get the lineup card signature authenticated, though I'll likely crack it out when I have a moment.) Jeff, the additions to your collection never cease to amaze!

Was looking up some information and discovered that for Anthony Rizzo's MLB debut, John Hirschbeck was behind the plate.
I purchased the vast majority of John Hirschbeck's personal collection of lineup cards a few years back, so I went to the box of uncatalogued lineup cards I have, and there it was! Always fun finding pieces like this years after the collection was purchased. |
For those of you who collect lineup cards here are some to look for:
https://www.aol.com/writing-wall-gia...033459359.html. It mentions far down in the article that former MLer Jerry Narron also does this. |

Over the past few days I finalized a purchase of a collection of lineup cards from the family of a former umpire. Purchased a subset of the lineup cards that they had (around 40 pairs of lineup cards). Many are rookie season lineup cards from players like Griffey, Frank Thomas, Jeter, Pujols, David Ortiz and Miguel Cabrera, (which I love and think are a super underrated and rare collectible, but also recognize that most people probably don't see anything significant in them), but also some other really cool ones which I look forward to sharing! |

For those who appreciate baseball history and lineup cards, I have created a Facebook Page where I look at baseball history through the lens of lineup cards The plan is to look at baseball stories large and small. The latest post focuses on father's and sons in baseball. For those who are on Facebook, I'll love for you to take a look, and if you enjoy what you see, like and follow the page. https://www.facebook.com/profile.php...61560697693269 |

Lineup card from 9/11/1949
Game was the 2nd of a doubleheader, as noted on the card. The game featured many of the Cardinals who remain well known to this day with HOF Red Schoendienst getting a 2B, Enos Slaughter walking before being replaced, Marty Marion walking a couple of times and Stan Musial leading the way with 3 this and 2 homeruns. Musial and Slaughter would finish the season #2 and #3 in the MVP race (behind Jackie Robinson). Similarly, the Cardinals would finish the season 1 game behind the Dodgers for the pennant. Perhaps surprisingly, I have come across under 10 lineup cards with Musial on them in all my time collecting these, both live, being sold online and in completed listings from auction houses. This is only the third Musial HR game I have ever come across, and the only multi-HR game I have found. Obviously they are not nearly as in demand as a Musial HR game bat or jersey, but I am quite confident that fewer HR lineup cards exist than HR bats or jerseys. (For jerseys, obviously, any one that exists was almost certainly worn for multiple HR's.) |
Not a line up card but I thought this crowd might find this interesting. Here is one of John Sterling's scorecards from a Yankees radio broadcast:

I imagine that many who post or view this thread are already familiar with this, but I wanted to take a moment and mention the new book on lineup cards that just came out.
Tom O'Reilly, who I believe is a member of this site wrote the first book ever written on lineup cards. The book has a ton of photos and stories about cool lineup cards, provides a great overview of the history of lineup cards, and lots of really cool info. I was interviewed for the book and some of the images come from my collection. Other members of this site were also interviewed and shared parts of their collection. https://mcfarlandbooks.com/product/the-lineup-card/ |
