Adrian, sorry it took me so long to post. I hope you enjoy your new card. :)
But I don't think that it is as rare as some folks say it is.

Bocabirdman 04-23-2013 10:58 AM

I joined this party late and I have been trying to catch up. Someone tell me if I have thew facts straight.

1. We have a newbie who has come into a pile of money.

2. Instead of taking some time to learn about fakes and reprints, he has jumped into the deep end of the pool and is buying cards for large sums of money.

3. He has convinced various dealers to accept his word as to forth-coming payment. They obliged and have removed the cards from their working inventories. (I will glady pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today:D)

4. He has, at this point in time, neither the cards nor the money.

5. He has already canceled at least two purchases. I wager he is on at least two sh*t lists.

6. Every card deal discussed includes a dollar amount. Am I the only one who cannot remember a price in the monthly pick-up thread?

7. He admits to having a compulsion disorder that he takes medication for.

8. He has acknowledged, but ignored, numerous bits of good advice from a forum full of some of the sharpest baseball card collectors on the planet.

9. He most likely has posted multiple times since I started typing this.

10. I have completely wasted my time typing this.

A man jumps off the roof of a ten story building. Through an open window on each passing floor he is heard to say, "So far, so good.". :D:eek::)

No thanks I would no be a buyer even if the guy was a good guy!!! Just to much for a card.

No it is not right...but also right at the same time (asked dealer if this is what they are going for and was told yes then came here and was told no multiple times)....you asked for a simple yes or no that does not work in this situation.

Okay, to put this in context, here's the original question that you are responding to, and yes, "a simple yes or no" works absolutely fine. Your deal was with the seller, not with the board, and I think it's also safe to assume that your deal was not contingent on verifying the price with a bunch of people on an internet discussion board. So I'll take "no" to be your response to my question. Thanks - "no" is the response that I believe everyone on this board (except Flavious) would hope you would give.

"So Adrian, just to make sure I'm understanding things correctly: If you and I agreed on a price for a card, you told me that you couldn't pay me for a week and I am agreeable to that, I forego any other possible deals on that card since I KNOW you are going to pay me, then you go on an internet forum to talk about your deal and decide that you've agreed to pay me too much....it's okay for you to back out of the deal, because it's a good business decision?

Just answer 'yes' or 'no' please. As a seller in the above example, that's all I really need to know."

You can play the reverse psychology card game if you like....But my answer was NO....not YES!!!

I am old enough to answer by myself thank you very much!!! Maybe not sane enough do.....had to say it hahahaha!!!

I caught my error and corrected it immediately, but even as fast as I type, I can't type as fast as you are reading and posting.

Relax, man. I have to assume that you are conducting your business transactions (and decision-making) the same way that you are reading this forum and posting. Bad, bad way to do things.

The real question is, "Are we the people on each floor or the frenzied crowd gathering on the sidewalk across the street, taking bets on 'bounce or splat?'".

Adrian- you have worn me and the rest of the board out. You now get 2 new threads a day and 15 posts a day. Your 15 can start now so it can be fair. That is twice as many times as I post a day and I post more than anyone. Use them wisely.

Leon,

Can we set up a separate section entitled "Zone91 daily post summary"?

Sort of like the evening news, with just the highlights? "In today's posts..."

I have work that needs to get done, and these 17 page rants are killing me! :D

Zone91 04-23-2013 11:21 AM

Leon

I will respect those terms!!!

Contrary to popular belief, apparently guys do enjoy soap operas. I have spent an (almost certainly) unhealthy amount of time watching this one.

Pulling out of here, for now. I have a cool idea for a poll.

And no, it has nothing to do with the OP. I simply wouldn't go there.

Best regards to all.

Eric

Here's my take on Adrian. The man's got some dough, and likes baseball cards, and wants to talk baseball cards with a bunch of other collectors. Sounds Good! If he is playing games here we will all know in a week or two. In the meantime let's enjoy. :cool:Dave

He didn't post very much for a lot of days. He is probably averaging 50+ a day lately. I think 15 a day will be bearable. If not, then it will be revised.

bigtrain 04-23-2013 11:41 AM

This is fascinating stuff. Lots of lawyers, dentists and doctors on here I know. Any psychiatrists? Just kidding.

Adrian, I have nothing against you, though I was somewhat taken aback by your apology to Nelson for thinking he was from the USA. You guys can have Justin Bieber back by the way.

Good to hear that you hope to pay off your mortgage. That does show good sense. I don't think of my collectibles as investments. Real Estate, stocks, bonds, mutual funds are investments. So, pay off your mortgage if you can, secure your future including retirement and then spend on what makes you happy. Baseball cards can be part of that. For some folks here, it is a big part.

Again Adrian, I don't know you but you seem to be quite a bit younger than many of us here. You will find that this is a very diverse group. There are members here who make $20,000 a year and others who make that much in a couple of days. Usually, we don't comment on how much we are spending because a) it is nobody's business and most of us know what cards cost anyway and b) it is nobody's business. In this day and age, it is no difficult feat to track down someone from the information they post online. It can be dangerous to let strangers know that you are coming into a lot of money or that valuables are being delivered to you. I wish you the best of luck but caution you to think about being more discreet.

My goals are the following:

-Buy only the rarest T206 cards I can afford (I can't afford the Wagner like 99% of the population)....I also already own the Ray Demmitt St-Louis variation in SGC 30 (2), The Christhy Mathewson PSA 4 Dark Cap and Walther Johnson hands to chest in PSA 4;

-I prefer PSA & BVG for me SGC is my 3rd option;

-No not into collecting sets;

-I want to also collect rarer T206 backs but most likely only in a couple of years if they are still affordable that is;

-I want to own a 52 Topps Mantle in PSA 4 or PSA 5 and

-I want to buy as many 1887 Old Judge HOF players as possible with the best images I can find.

I would love to own a shoeless Joe Jackson E90-1 Caramel in PSA 1 or PSA 2.

That pretty much sums up my goals.

NICE WHALE LIST ^^^^
REA has a Babe Ruth (Rookie Card), suprise its not on your list.
They have a Joe Jackson T210, A Wagner T206 and a high end PSA 8.5 52 Mantle

Probably doesn't even apply here, heh, but the explosion of responses to this thread --- almost entirely being unrelated to the original subject of the thread --- made me think of this quote. A great stupid movie...

I'll let you all know if he pays! I know it may seem a little unorthodox, but I do think he's an interesting guy and have enjoyed some messages back and forth with him. I think his personality may be the antithesis of my own, but life would definitely be a duldrum if everyone was like me.

Eric, you’re correct and you're one of them every time Adrian posts you're right behind him in the thread. :D

wonkaticket 04-23-2013 12:02 PM

Honestly I don’t see why all the concern over how this guy spends his money, how he spends his money or who he spends his money with. Who cares? Unless he’s doing deals with you what do you guys care?

“Ease” said it best. Adrian will either become a collector or burn out then sell his cards. I’ve seen about 20 people come on Net54 over the years and do the same thing.

I do agree Adrian doesn’t need a new thread each day for every thought in his head LOL. Adrian only advice I'll give you take it or leave it. Is you share too much detail on your deals.

It’s none of these folks business how you afford or buy your cards that’s your business. If someone asks me “how did you afford that?” or “how or why did you buy that?” I would say let me worry about that. You worry about what you have to pay for and what and why you buy. All the other info is just feeding the sharks to ask more questions…just my 2 cents.

Cheers,

John

John,

I completely agree! The caveat for me is that Adrian has 500+ posts and actually (I could be wrong) hasn't spent ANY money yet or actually have ANY cards in hand!

It's a train wreck waiting to happen, IMHO.

John...beer you ask?

"I'll tell ya where we'll go. Someplace warm. A place where the beer flows like wine. Where beautiful women instinctively flock like the salmon of Capistrano. I'm talkin' bout a little place called... (silently) As-pen."

I'm sure that's a movie quote that I don't know, but salmon don't really flock. It's the swallows that return to Capistrano each year. But I am interested in knowing where the quote is from ....

Its amazing to me the amount of emotion, mostly negative, that fellow "collectors" have spewed at this guy.

Yes he's different. If everything he has said is true, and I have no reason to disbelieve him at this point, then he is an amazing story, and a success story, who has joined "our" hobby. He has the most positive attitude I've seen in a long time.

Is he going real fast? Yes. Go overboard a bit? Yes. So what? The guy is passionate about cards right now and that's a good thing. I don't understand the venom.

Leon, I like this guy and I think you do too. He has agreed to your stipulations with a smile and he's taken all this abuse good naturedly. There is no doubt he is high maintenance, but I'll take an Adrian thread over a PSA sucks thread any day. Randy Trierweiler

Randy, we think very much alike. I like Adrian (hi Adrian) and still do, a lot. I wish I had his amount of enthusiasm (and I have quite a bit). That being said, when part of a community sometimes we have to lose a few of our rights in order for the community to flourish. Setting Adrians limits will help everyone AND even with the 15 posts-limit per day, it's still more than 2x more than I post (which is a lot). All I am doing, in asking him to limit his threads and posts, is trying to help the collective board. Trust me, had I not been bombarded with emails and PMs, over the last several days, I would have not said anything (yet). It hasn't bothered me but has bothered enough members that I had to say something, even if I really didn't want to. It's a very tough position and one with no perfect answer. I absolutely love the enthusiasm and truly hopes Adrian continues to be a valuable and energetic board member.

Seriously

No poll or organized general consensus, but I say ‘Stays’. The toughest part will be if he can keep to an adjustment of threads, posts, et al. And I do not know if he can, and I am relieved I will not have to make that decision. Still, he is what he is, so am I, and so is everybody. I’ve changed from my original stance. If this is the worst thing I will ever have to put up with in my own life, I am blessed. Annoying? Yes. Frantic? Yes. A collector, regardless of how manic? Yes. Starts threads that allow me to upload and discuss my post war vintage in pre war? Yes, Yes, Yes.

You know, I've been thinking of buying a pedestal to get on. Do any of you guys have any suggestion? I sort of like the granite models, they're classy but they are kind of heavy and difficult to move around...some of the wood models are nice, especially with a lacquered finish...are those slick?
