Saying you have never overpaid for something/anything in any collectible hobby is like saying you have ridden a bicycle and have never fallen off you’re either amazing or a liar. :D

Personally I would prefer seeing 100 posts of Adrian dropping coin and talking smack about his new items he’s jazzed about vs. 100 posts about dinks with fake eBay Wagner’s and such. Or dozens of posts from armchair graders ragging other’s eBay auctions all while bumping their overgraded cards in the BST over and over and over….

Sadly Peter if the posts you and I listed went away Net54 would shut down it would be a like a ghost town with the occasional on topic tumbleweed rolling by. :D

One of my favorite cards of all time... I have no idea who Whitney is, but that dog is awesome!

Adrian, I am happy that you have found a hobby that you enjoy. Continue to buy what you like in whatever fashion you desire to do so. If you have any questions about anything on the postwar side, always feel free to reach out to me, and I will help where I can. Also, feel free to PM me or ignore me in the future if you don't feel comfortable sharing info in a public setting.

I go to Montreal quite often as well as Paris it would take one hell of Frenchman let alone one that digs baseball cards to get under my skin.

However there have been a few Québécois that got the job done. :p

Look on the bright side at least he’s not insisting that all his cards be bi-lingual or in bi-lingual packaging. :)

You see that Mantle in a 3 does nothing for me (creased at the bottom...colors not vibrant (+ browning) as they should be on this blue beauty and the centering to me is not appealing)...beauty is in the eye of the beholder as they say. I would not buy that card but that is me....I am sorry to say so but that is the truth in my situation.

Woah, pretty strong opionions there, but I guess everyone's entitled their's... right?

MattyC, that Mantle does plenty for me. Wish I had one like it. Great card, enjoy it!

(not sure if anyone else responded to this yet, but my eyes are getting tired 11 pages in)

MattyC 04-17-2013 11:18 PM

Ian,

Thanks. I am actually posting this from the roof of the Capitol Records building here in LA-- was just about to take a swan dive like the opening of Lethal Weapon because of how the OP dissed that PSA 3 Mantle :( (Was just trying to show him the range of centering on lower grade examples, in case he was not in the habit of perusing scans on VCP and wanted centering.)

Luckily I took a look at it and the colors are quite vibrant in hand; I blame my rather bootleg scanner for the lack of a crisp scan-- perhaps I should have borrowed my brother's camera? Alas he's in New York.

Everyone has their own tastes and opinions and I respect that. That said, I will take all these below plus that PSA 3 Mick for the cost of that PSA 4...

It's a nice card. Don't be concerned - he is just missing his governor.

I'm excited about REA, but suspect I will do just as well this Spring as I do every year. Which means I will have no problem paying my mortgage.

MattyC 04-17-2013 11:31 PM

REA Spring Auction is always a fun time of year. I love that feeling of reaching my max bid on Day Two, before the catalogs are even in the mail! Hey, who knows, a bid can hold for 30 days, right? Seriously though it's always a great time, from discussing the items to the thrill of chasing a great lot, just paging through the catalog, win or lose, lots of fun.

Glad I could help Matt. Gotta love it when a No Cal picks a So Cal up.. not that you need picking up with that stash! Sweet cards! I myself own very OC examples of the '51 Bowman and '56 Topps Mantles, but the beauty is, off centering never really bothered me (and I won't let 10,000 posts saying otherwise sway me)

Curious, had you jumped, would have left your shirt unbuttoned so it would flap open in the breeze while you lay atop a squished car? Also, you may not be out of the woods yet, I'm pretty sure they laced your powder

MattyC 04-17-2013 11:46 PM

I knew that blow smelled curiously of Clorox powder. Gotta get a new dealer.

itjclarke 04-17-2013 11:53 PM

I'd love it if Mr Joshua was running around as muscle in the memorabilia underworld... Why does a hobby like our's always have to lose those kick ass bad guys to drugs and weapons smuggling. All sports collectibles get left with are crooked white collar auctioneer types (very boring).

teetwoohsix 04-18-2013 12:41 AM

I'm waiting for Rod Serling to post :)

Hey, are you really just one of the Bruces?

My prediction: autistic day trader.

Adrian, you should pick up a Hasselblad so you can show off your cards to us. It's really the only way to show them as they deserve to be shown.

Each of the Bruces refers to himself as the entire collective group of Bruces;i.e-"We"

Back when I had less self-restraint, I could never tell which Bruce I was talking with. Not knowing how many there were didn't help.

kcohen 04-18-2013 08:16 AM

Well, reading through this thread has taken me through my second cup of morning coffee. Mission accomplished. Don't understand why there are members of such low self-esteem that they feel compelled to rain on Adrian's party.

Fortunately, the thread was made complete with one of John's photoshop efforts. Sadly lacking lately. You must be busy my friend.

Lastly, I will given some advice to Adrian that is, exactly as most of the other advice given here, worth exactly what he is paying for it.

Adrian - just want you to know that some of my most prized cards, not necessarily the best deals, were obtained as a result of the combination of a late night on-line auction and a few glasses of bourbon. Tough to equal the jolt of an impulse buy.

Courage mon vieux. Amuse-toi bien. Il ne faut jamais oublier que le bons sens n'ont aucun rôle a jouer dans ce hobby. Autrement, personne n'y participerait.

Runscott 04-18-2013 08:46 AM

Very entertaining thread.

I think zone's enthusiasm is very interesting - enough so that I've largely ignored his earlier off-color comments. I'm sure others have not and that has influenced their responses to his zealous posting, his minor insults of other forum members' cards and his unhidden pride in all aspects of himself.

I wouldn't call such responses to zone the result of "low self-esteem".

Lots of thread police lately.

I did not even know it was his Mantle card any 52 Topps Mantle owner should be proud of his card....I simply said I prefer the look of the PSA 4 I purchased but I am 100% sure that there is someone here with a 3,4,5,6,7,8 or a 9 and maybe even one of the 3 known 10's that looks better than mine and I am OK with that...maybe they even paid less than I did...but that is fine with me. No grudges here the guy should be happy with his Mantle as I am happy with mine. :)

Zone91 04-18-2013 08:51 AM

kcohen

I am truly happy with my purchases and that will not change no matter what.

I am going to continue enjoying this hobby that is for sure!!! Thanks for ALL the positive comments and even the negative ones at least we are talking about cards are we not!!!

You guys are ABSOLUTELY right our favorite card does NOT have to be our most expensive one.....that is very very true!!! Personally I prefer the Old Judge (MUCH more history than modern cards) cards and the T206 cards over post war cards....any day of the week!!!

I always wanted a 1914 Baltimore news Babe Ruth or 52 Topps Mantle ''rookie'' since I was much younger BUT I can't afford the Ruth so I purchased the Mantle it is as simple as that. Sold some coins I owned and transferred the funds towards cards. By the way I grew up poor (with no parents...not like lots of people) like lots of people BUT worked my ass off for what I have got in life and I am proud of that....hence not a SHOW OFF...but simply proud of my accomplishments in life.

I worked as a janitor for many many (at 8,50$ per hour) years but put myself threw school and pushed very hard to get a career afterwards and still work hard every day!!! So for those who think we all get the silver spoon treatment when we have some money that is NOT the case some of us worked our buts off every single day like most of you do.

Adrian- I want to be clear, even though I checked up on one thing, I still believe you and think you are an asset to the board. It's just that the seller of some of those cards happens to be someone I am very hobby-friendly with. So I called him and we spoke for a while. Tony is one of my favorite guys to hang out with at the National, and we do so every year. In that respect, You also should understand that a lot of us go back decades with other board members and are very good and close friends. Some people have said we are a clique, which is sort of true and not a bad thing. We watch out for, and care about, each other. We (definitely me) have all overpaid for cards at one time or another. It comes with the territory. I will echo other sentiments though. You might consider taking your time in doing stuff. You don't have to, and it's your money, so bless you for being in the hobby and buying cards. Most of us have seen collectors burn out quickly by moving too fast. We don't want that to happen to you. But hey, if that is what you want to do, go for it. I have stuck up for you from day one and am still here for you. Please drink a bit less caffeine. :) It's all good my friend.

Thanks!!! I had about 3-4 cards I truly wanted and have purchased them all so far except the Bill O'Hara T206 error (a nice PSA 2 would be just fine with me) card after this card I will be going much slower to find some other cards I may want to buy and yes at the BEST PRICE I can find...just could not hold myself back for those 3-4 cards (some of witch I only heard about a few weeks ago like the E90-1 Caramel Mike Mitchell I think that is what makes me look kind of nuts is going after a card I did not know anything about except that it is rare).

I will look into the national show for sure just have to get a new passport done.

pawpawdiv9 04-18-2013 09:07 AM

I just like his 52 Mantle...I havent the funds to buy one..but i may be on a spending spree at REA.....I may reach the moon.
All i can say, if i had his $$$....i being going after some rare cards myself.
I just reccomend...do research and price comparisons...and do as much of it as possible.

Zone91 04-18-2013 09:13 AM

By the way guys 15000$ is a LOT of money (the only card I would pay that much for is the the 52 Mantle or maybe a E90-1 Shoeless Joe Jackson) for me as well so when I decide to go ahead and spend that kind of money I want to get the best looking card I can for it. I will repeat I am not a millionaire and never will be one...I did not grow up rich and few if any change social classes during their life time.

Zone91 04-18-2013 09:20 AM

Living in Canada I have to buy the right card right of the bat that I truly like because for me to upgrade later on with all the taxes and custom fees would be crazy...so I have to land the right card that suits me the 1st shot and the 52 Mantle suited me....was not a card I would regret down the road.

Here in Canada very few people own a 52 Mantle so I would always take the risk of shipping back and forth from the U.S and I do not want to do that so the cards I get will stay in my collection a long long time.

4815162342 04-18-2013 09:21 AM

Just out of sheer curiosity . . . what do you do for a living Adrian?

Zone91 04-18-2013 09:25 AM

4815162342

I do research projects with a friend that has his PHD in my field. We get contracts from the Federal government. I have my masters in sociology and he has his doctor's degree....he teaches at the local University and gets many many side job contracts that I work on. He was one my many professors at that school when I was there as a student and we had a lot in common in our way of thinking and work ethics. I work from home basically for myself.

Yes yes I know I do research!!!!

Sounds boring to most but I like reading a lot so I enjoy it and it feels rewarding that is a big plus!!!

True of course many of us here in Canada are hockey card collectors. ;)

I collected hockey but switched over to lacrosse when I discovered the C60, C59 and C61 Imperial Tobacco series and the fact that some of these lacrosse players also played hockey!

Gotta love vintage hockey cards they are way way undervalued and very rare....nice cards sir!!! I use to have a very nice hockey card collection but switched to coins for some reason now I am into vintage baseball...life and it's many paths!!! On another note one football card I have always wanted is the Bronko Nagurski 1935 chicle rookie card or the Holy grail of football cards I have looked around for a few months now and they seem to all have bad centering I will wait to find one graded a PSA 3 or PSA 4 well centered with a strong picture...I am in no rush for that card but will buy one when I can find the right one.

Link for those who do not know that card:

I thought this was the holy grail of football cards.

Zone91 04-18-2013 09:45 AM

You got me on that one do not even know what that card is to be honest everyone calls the other card the Holy grail of football cards. Is that card even a football card??? I would not pay 12500$ for that card even if it is the true holy grail of football cards I love the look of the 1935 card much better.
