Picked up a few Swedish Rekord Journal cards dating within the range of 1956-1962.

These hand-cut magazine cards aren't for everyone, but I like them.

Great way to get cards of fighters who aren't available in other sets, like Joe(y) Brown. I was happy to add one of those to my HOF set.

Picked up a few 1929 Godfrey Phillips Sporting Champions

Complete 27-card set shown below. Card were used to promote a CD of boxing entrance songs. Cards were distributed to news organizations in a promotional package, and to the first 50 people to purchased the CD online.

Very nice! I have a few of the cards but didn't know of the full set checklist.

Is Burns tough?

One thing I love about this hobby is how little I really know. Relatively speaking, I know a lot after 40+ years collecting, but compared to the total information out there, not so much. I was roving through eBay and came across this:

I didn't even know he had a candy bar. I am a bit surprised, actually, since the candy products I'd seen before were all related to heavyweights: Dempsey, Ali, etc. Then again, his WWII stature was huge. I researched it a bit and found this from a review of one of his biographies:

"By early March 1943, his beaming, gap-toothed smile was once again on the front pages of newspapers across the nation. He was at a new apex of his fame, the accolades for Corporal Barney Ross (USMC) eclipsing even the glow of his lightweight and welterweight championship glory. His face was on Ringside bubblegum cards; he even had a Barney Ross candy bar."

OK the timing on the Ringside is a bit off but the candy bar as a WWII item is confirmed.

A little more on Ross, from Wikipedia:

He served with B Company, 2nd Battalion, 8th Marines during the Battle of Guadalcanal in the South Pacific. One night, he and three other comrades were trapped under enemy fire. All four were wounded; Ross was the only one able to fight. Ross gathered his comrades' rifles and grenades and single-handedly fought nearly two dozen Japanese soldiers over an entire night, killing them all by morning. Two of the Marines died, but he carried the third on his shoulders to safety; the other man weighed 230 lb (104 kg) compared to Ross' 140 lb (64 kg). Ross was awarded America's third highest military honor, the Silver Star, as well as a presidential citation. As one of America's greatest "celebrity" war heroes, he was honored by President Roosevelt in a Rose Garden ceremony. He was also awarded the Edward J. Neil Trophy as "the outstanding boxer of 1942" by the Boxing Writers Association of New York.

Yes, it's pretty tough. I've been looking for a Burns Ogden's for 2 & 1/2 years. Much longer than I anticipated.

Picked up this pair of plastic cards produced by Adidas for an Adidas' Italian website advertising promotion. From numbering, there are at least 4 cards in the set. In addition to the Ali card, the other card is David Beckham. The Wayback Machine archives the URL on the card from 2004-2005, so the cards should have been produced during that time period.

One of the few sets I'm collecting are the premiums from Slidewell/Slim Jim Bow Ties. The Marciano is #1 on my want list of course. I found a promo PC a few years ago.

Slidewell used a few of the ads to create promotional broadsides (11 x 14) for specific fights, basically by enlarging the premiums and adding the fight details across the bottom. Tough as the set is, these are almost impossible. I've seen one with Archie Moore and this one:

I saw the Marciano in the catalog, opened the lot, and forgot all about it...until they called me.

The interesting thing is that the Marciano was a complete re-do of the premium, because the premium itself was issued pre-championship, as the PC shows. The Murphy was just a reuse of the premium art. Since all are National Studios credited and the Marciano poster image is a commonly used Marciano image found with many other products as well as on his training camp souvenirs, I have a feeling that National did the photos and created the art for the Slidewell/Slim Jim set.

I just love these career-issued Marciano promo pieces.

2016 Vegas Outlaws Don King. The Tyson quote at the bottom makes this card a classic. I have an extra so I may send it to King for a TTM signature...

This came from Argentina after a long, long journey from Buenos Aires to NYC back to Buenos Aires, back to NYC then to Cali. That's nearly 20,000 miles.

It is typical of South American chocolate album sets of the era, printed on thin stock, 2.25" tall 1.5" wide. Photoengraved. Only one I've ever seen.

Adam, that Dempsey looks just like the c. 1928 Salem/Josetti/Jasmatzi card issued in Germany.

Makes sense with the large number of German immigrants moving to Argentina during the 1st half of the 20th century.

Correct; the base artwork for the Salem/Josetti/Jasmatzi/Sulima/Manoli cards was used in at least two SoAm sets, this one and the Chilenas de Tabacos set.

Picked up just my second Ali. Is there a reason mine has that triangle on the back? I've seen some other cards in this set that look like this, and others that have a clean white back.

Yes, there is definitely a guy in the background. :D

The card is misgraded. The triangle is a stain from album mounting. PSA missed it.

Really? Hmm, I was thinking that might be the answer, but it was such a perfect triangle I thought it was probably something else I wasn't aware of. I've seen others with discoloration on the back, and they often haven't downgraded those cards either because of the stains.
