Great photo Gary. Ideas on date and players? They almost look like cricketers.

Leon-The baseball CdV was in the album pictured on this post. The album contained many Civil War era images as well. The baseball CdV is dated 1867 at the top. The players names are listed at the bottom and the picture was taken in Sante Fe, New Mexico. This is the earliest baseball CdV I have ever seen from west of the Mississippi. I have been in contact with the the New Mexico Historical Society, as well as other New Mexico organizations, regarding the image. Researching it is still a work in progress, but I believe the image will end up in some New Mexico historical publication eventually. The fact that there was a baseball team in the New Mexico Territory in 1867 amazes me. I also have a baseball CdV taken in the Dakota Territory, but it is from about 1880.

Gary - Thanks for sharing - WOW ! I dig the CDV's as well. Does the reverse have any writing on it ? Nice find !

GaryPassamonte 07-30-2012 11:05 AM

Jeremy,
The reverse has the photographer's stamp: N Brown & Son
Photographers
Santa Fe, NM
There is no writing on the reverse. The front has the year "1867" written at the top and the names of the players on the bottom: Keiting,Watts,Thacher.

What is on the back of this Old Judge is as interesting as what is on the front.

The back has a stamp portraying at-the-time Presidential hopeful Benjamin Harrison and his Vice-Presidential running mate Levi Morton. Wish it was more centered and darker.

Awesome set. I cringed when I saw all of those "floating" cards in the holders. Have you thought about getting them re-holdered like the Anson and Ward so they don't move around and get dinged up?

Neat Old Judge August Kloff / Ben Harrison card.

And yes, I'm old enough to have voted for Abe Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, and perhaps Ben Harrison.

Nice, she set the bar high on the first anniversary. Can't wait to see what you get for year five? Stick around awhile, you might get an Old Judge complete set by the 50th anniversary!

Nice! I hope you got her something better than flowers! :)

mcap100176 11-12-2012 07:14 PM

I hand her my credit card and tell her to go buy a watch, she loves watches. Regretfully, since her birthday is Dec. 29, she decided to combine the anniversary gift with her birthday present. First anniversary and I don't like this trend! She already bought herself her Christmas present earlier this month.

This month my collection increased by a Buchner, hers increased by a Michael Kors and a Gucci. She's the big winner in the household pickup thread!
