OTD in 1979, the Orioles trailed Detroit 5-3 going into the bottom of the 9th inning & Doug DeCinces hit a two out, two run walk off HR to give the Orioles a 6-5 victory..It was this day that the phrase "Orioles Magic" was born...

1962 Post Cereal Orioles
1 Attachment(s)
The 1962 Post Cereal cards were one of those sets that I believed I finished years ago. I was aware of a few variations in the set, but didn't realize the extent of them. I'm still working on verifying all the Orioles. It seems that most if not all of the cards have variations depending on the brand of cereal they were on.
Here are a couple examples. I was aware of the Jim Gentile (Home listed as either Baltimore or San Lorenzo). I didn't realize that Brooks Robinson had a cropping difference (either more or less of his fingers showing on the bat) Attachment 406329 1962 Post Cereal Orioles checklist - 27 Jim Gentile 28 Marv Breeding 29 Brooks Robinson 30 Ron Hansen 31 Jackie Brandt 32 Dick Williams 33 Gus Triandos 34 Milt Pappas 35 Hoyt Wilhelm 36 Chuck Estrada Don't confuse these with the Post Canadian cards (fronts in English & French) and much harder to find smaller Jello cards. FYI, for some reason Brooks Robinson wasn't included in the 1962 Jello set, but the other Orioles were. |

Day 176 (June 24, 2020 – 176)
The Orioles travelled to play the Chicago White Sox on June 14, 1969. It was Teachers’ Day at Comiskey Park. The Orioles won by the slightest of margins 12-3. I’m not really much of a ticket collector. I have a few from when I went to the games and a few from picking them up when I hit a dry spell and nothing much else is out there. I know we have some big ticket collectors and possibly one day I’ll work on acquiring more, but for now not so much. I picked this ticket up because it was pretty big compared to the O’s tickets, nice looking, was a full ticket and the price was right. As a bonus, Brooks hit a HR in this game. Full ticket to the White Sox vs. Orioles game on June 14, 1969. Attachment 406484 I was trying to locate a picture of Brooks playing the White Sox, but couldn’t locate one so had to settle for a different color Sox…Red. The below photograph was taken by Frank O’Brien of the Boston Globe from a game on July 20, 1969 played at Fenway park in Boston. Attachment 406485 |

Here is a Sporting News print of Memorial Stadium from around 1982. It highlights various historical moments that occurred in the stadium. I say 1982, because it references events from 1980 and 1981, but has no mention of the Orioles World Championship in 1983. I believe it might have been reprinted around 1990, because I've seen some prints offered with printing in the lower left corner. This is one of the originals. I know I picked it up before 1990. The print is around 16x22. Attachment 406487 I included a ticket stub from the Orioles first game at Memorial Stadium on April 15, 1954 as part of the display. Attachment 406488 |

1966 Bendix Beam Magazine
1 Attachment(s)
The Bendix Radio Division in Baltimore was part of the Bendix Corporation. A large part of their business was the manufacturing of commercial electronics for airplanes and automobiles.
The Bendix Beam was a bi-monthly magazine for employees about the happenings within the company. In Oct 1966, the magazine devoted about half of it's content to the newly crowned World Series Champions, the Baltimore Orioles. Brooks Robinson was on the cover, but the magazine had articles about most of the team. The articles were organized by position, including stories highlighting contributions by the pitching staff, infielders, outfielders and even the bench players. Ironically, there is a note in the magazine that the October issue would be the last magazine printed and it was being switched to a newspaper type publication. Attachment 406626 |

Orioles 8x10 Publicity Photos
10 Attachment(s)
I've posted a few of these before. I'm not sure what they are actually called, but I refer to them as publicity sheets. They were used by newspapers and magazines, if they needed a photo of a player to insert in their publication. Many of these photos were cut up into individual photos, have missing photos cut from the sheet or have marks/notations on them from the newspapers/magazines. I really enjoy these sheets. A team set each year consists of 3-5 sheets. Morton Tadder also produced some of these each year, but these are not the Tadder versions.
Here are some of the complete sheets I have featuring Cal Ripken Jr. Cal had an amazing career and is featured on countless items. It's always amazed me on the number of items that spelled his name incorrectly. In 1991 and 1992, Cal's name was misspelled Ripkin, even though Billy's name was correct. 1985 Attachment 406724 1986 Attachment 406725 1987 Attachment 406726 1989 Attachment 406727 1990 Attachment 406728 1991 Spelled Ripkin Attachment 406722 1992 Spelled Ripkin Attachment 406723 1993 Attachment 406729 1994 Attachment 406730 1995 Attachment 406731 |

Posting kind of a fun little item today. It’s a couple business cards with Brooks pictured on the front, Mr. All Star, and a Brooks and Eddie rendering on the back for All Star Chevrolet Dodge along with the employee name, title and phone number. The dealership, I believe, was in Denton, Maryland, but I could be mistaken; I know the All Star dealerships in MD had several locations back then. I know both Brooks and Eddie did some advertising for these dealerships and I’ve seen some other items associated with this dealership and have a few of the advertising materials myself. Good morning,
Alan, I love that Bendix Beam magazine. My next door neighbor when I was growing up worked for Bendix and would give me items from the Bendix Orioles group outings (I posted one of the group sign up posters with Cal and Eddie in January). Below is an Equitable Trust Bank Orioles Savings Coupon from 1976. I wonder how many of them were actually redeemed and how many are still floating around out there? Mark...I'm not sure if I mentioned it before but I can remember going to All Star Dodge on a Saturday afternoon during the season in like 1986, where they had both Brooks & Eddie signing (free) autographs.

Day 180 (June 28, 2020 – 180)
Orioles fans from 1968 all the way to 1975 likely recognize Linda Warehime the blond-haired girl with the broom. For a period of seven years Linda would sweep the bases, mound and the infielders’ shoes at Memorial Stadium during the fifth-inning break. Her most important job was to taunt the visiting team’s third base coach. 1969 Linda Warehime photo by Tadder Attachment 407068 Early 70’s Linda Warehime sweeping home photo by Jay Spencer Attachment 407069 And with Brooks... 1955 Topps Dobleheaders
5 Attachment(s)
One of my favorite sets from the 1950's is the 1955 Topps Doubleheader set. Each card pictures two different players. The cards are perforated in the middle. One player is pictured while folded and another player when the card is unfolded. Both players share the bottom part of the card. I love the colors and design of the set. One really cool fact is, if you place the unfolded cards side by side, they form several continuous stadium backgrounds. I don't have the complete set, but here's a photo I found to illustrate the stadium backgrounds.
Attachment 407076 The set contains seven Orioles. Five players are shown while folded and two while unfolded. My only complaint is that I wish all the Orioles were pictured while unfolded. Folded - Chuck Diering, Billy O'Dell, Hal Smith, Harry Brecheen and Gus Triandos Unfolded - Fred Marsh and Bob Kennedy Attachment 407072 Attachment 407074 Attachment 407073 One of the most desired and valuable cards in the set is Hal Smith. I realized with June coming to an end, I hadn't posted my Bi Centennial bat of the month yet.
Here is a Lee May bat from 1976, along with an inscription of him being the A.L. RBI Champ that season. When he signed it for me at a Baltimore area show in '11, I asked him to add his RBI total of 109 and he said that he had 113 RBI's that year and wrote that (who argues with Lee May?)....Fortunately a friend of mine was able to remove that incorrect figure (though a remnant still remains): https://i.imgur.com/iPMHuki.jpg |

A newspaper type weekly reader called Senior, Vol. 9/Issue 3/June 29 – July 3, 1970 shows a couple of drawings of Brooks by Kersell. The article within the paper is called, “Cleaning Up Around Third”. 1970 Senior Weekly Reader - Summer Edition Attachment 407324 I might as well picture another newspaper type magazine that was put out by The Sun dated June 29, 1958. This is the Sunday Magazine and has Brooks, looking rather young and tough, on the cover (Man, I love the Bird on the sleeve). The article is called, “At Home with Brooks Robinson”. It has a couple of pictures inside that are early shots of Brooks. The magazine is in relatively poor condition, mostly my fault (don’t ask...), so hopefully one day I’ll find another in a bit better shape. The Sun Sunday Magazine June 29, 1958 Attachment 407325 |

1964 Sam Jones
1 Attachment(s)
According to the Orioles 2020 Media Guide, 20 managers, 101 coaches and 1100 players have appeared in an Orioles regular season game since 1954. In my quest to find photos of all of those players, in an Orioles uniform, even the most obscure of those names can be found, either through team issued photos by the Orioles or a variety of photographers from the era. However, even the Orioles don't have photos of some of these guys. I have mentioned that one player, John Buzhardt, has eluded me all these years.
While not the hardest for me to find, certainly in the top five is journeyman pitcher Sam Jones. Sam had a nice 12 year major league career with several teams. He has the distinction of being one of the few 20-20 pitchers. We won 21 games for the SF Giants in 1959, but also lost 20 games with the 1955 Chicago Cubs. In 1964, Sam pitched the final month of the season with the Orioles, appearing in 7 games with no record. It would be Sam's last stint in the major leagues. While the Orioles couldn't provide a photo, I was happy to find a newspaper wirephoto from when Sam joined the Orioles. Wirephotos aren't my first choice for a player, but sometimes you take what you can find. Sam Jones pictured with Chuck Estrada (left) and Manager Hank Bauer (middle) Attachment 407331 |

Louis Requena Photos

I echo Scott's comment. I enjoy each morning seeing what has been posted. It's made a very unusual start to 2020 much easier. I've seen plenty of items for the first time and even picked up some nice additions to my collection through new friends I've found on the site. Looking forward to the next 6 months.
Louis Requena was a legendary sports photographer. He passed away in 2013 after a 50 year career. Being based in New York, he is mostly associated with NY teams like the Yankees and Mets. He did take some very nice photos of players from other teams. I have one photo of Brooks Robinson that has the Requena stamp on the back. It is 4x5 and from the early 60's. The autograph is quite light, but the photo quality is nice. Attachment 407475 Attachment 407477 I don't know how many Orioles photos Louis Requena took, but here's a Ron Hansen that has the look of being taken by him. It's not stamped on the back, but was taken in Yankee Stadium. Attachment 407476 |
Thanks for the nice comments. At times it has been a bit of a struggle, but so far we’ve made it through half a year. I sure appreciate you guys posting your collections and make this thread so much more interesting with your collections. Now, let’s see if I can reach my personal goal and make it to year end...

Day 183 (July 1, 2020 – 183)
Not too far into collecting Brooks I ran across a Brooks Robinson watch, no band just the wrist watch. I thought it was such a neat item I had to get a band for it so I could wear the thing. It’s been quite a number of years now, but a Tom Seaver collector had the same type of watch with Seaver pictured, but he had the original packaging for the watch which included a picture of Seaver included in the package. I’ve seen a few of these pictured now, in auctions, over the years to include Banks, Aaron, and Mays. I know I’ve seen an ad for them in a magazine as well. A little detail about the watches. The Major League Super Star watches were manufactured by the American Time Co. in Detroit Michigan. The watches were licensed by the MLB Players Association and have a Copyright of 1968. They had a cheap black band originally and instead of using crystal to cover the face of the watch it’s made of plastic, but they do have Swiss made movement (they don’t keep accurate time at all; just an FYI). The photo cards in the original packaging are about 5” x 9” and the box just a tad larger than the photo; maybe 6” x 9”. If anyone has one, I’d love to see them pictured; such a nice item for a player or team collector. Here’s one other thing; I’ve seen them with a green face and a blue face. Were they made with both colors and/or is one faded? Hopefully you guys can get it solved. I did find a checklist of the watches. Thought I’d include even though some of them I’ve never seen: Al Kaline, Brooks Robinson, Carl Yastrzemski, Ernie Banks, Ferguson Jenkins, Harmon Killebrew, Henry Aaron, Joe Torre, Tom Seaver and Willie Mays. Over the years I picked up a couple of the Brooks watches and FINALLY last year picked up a watch with the original packaging. I’ll just show the watch and thin photo that came along for the ride… 1968 Major League SuperStar Watch Attachment 407576 Attachment 407580 Attachment 407579 Attachment 407577 A photo of Ernie Banks holding Brooks’ Super Star watch packaging and Brooks holding Ernie's Super Star watch package. Recently, Bill asked me if I also collected the Wichita Eagle-Beacon bubblegum-less cards. The answer is yes, but until a week ago, I hadn't found any that I was willing to bite on. This came in the mail yesterday. I couldn't resist the $15 tag on this example.
From 1983-1985, the newspaper inserted these cards in their sports sections, in groups of three. Subjects included a variety of sports beyond baseball. This panel is from April 29, 1985. 1985 Wichita Eagle-Beacon Cal Ripken Jr Attachment 407591 Additional Orioles included Rick Dempsey, Jim Palmer and Cal Ripken Jr in 1983. I showed my parents the part of the thread about Linda Warehime because they graduated Overlea High School with her in 1974. They said the amount of stuff the Orioles gave her to keep (particularly if a player left the team) was amazing. At one point she had a full Luis Aparicio uniform. I hope she held on to some of it!
