The Ryan tag is really a neat piece; I've never seen this particular tag before. I really like seeing these items, cards included, that I have never seen before.

Also, the Bol card is very unusual. The whole aesthetics of the piece are very peculiar...and cool.

I agree with all of this, especially re: the tag

Hey Mark:

No one guessed what your Brooksie and Boyer item was. Something to do with the gloves that were issued in 1964 after their MVP years? Store display or something??

Tell us. PLEASE.

love the oscar gamble photo and the 75 mandel litho set.

funny that those were actually distributed w/ topps gum as well.

doubt very few even know about that set...

have a card from that set and the backs are hilarious:

Odd Ball

Jeff - those are some awesome items. Thanks so much for sharing. I'm not sure what my favorite item would be, but really like that Nellie Fox memo book and the Mays Gould card. Of course the Gamble brings back fond memories of back in the day.

So, who's in the tattoo?

Also, looking at your stuff and the cool looking room in the background makes we want to sit and watch a movie in the room eating popcorn out of the Cardinals holder or is that a megaphone (or both?!?)

Bob F. - what in the world is that Tom Terrific item? Very cool...but what is it?

I'm one that hasn't seen the Mandel set; so what is the story of these cards?

Bob E. - thanks for sharing the back; now that is funny...:D

Todd - never seen the blue chip card as well. Is it cut from a sheet, or what's the deal on these?

Fred

Fred,

When I purchased this item originally I thought it was a chip bag holder since it has a clip on the back of the item and figured it celebrated the '64 MVP for both players (which the second part I'm sure is correct). Anyway, a while back I was organizing some of my junk (collection) an ran across an item I've had forever which is a '65 Rawlings Sporting Good Fair piece w/Brooks and Ken pictured. Well, as I was looking at the photo I noticed on both of their suits/blazer/sport coat (one of those three; I don't know the difference ;)) I noticed this piece was clipped to both of the pockets of Brooks and Ken. On the Boyer you can see it clearly and on Brooks you can see it from a side point of view; so it's definitely that item. Sorry that the picture is not that great, but had it on my phone to show another Brooksie collector (not really about the clip). So, the piece is a Rawlings sponsored piece made likely in '65 celebrating their MVP season.

Anyway, they may have been a giveaway at this event or possibly just worn by the two players. I'd think there were more made than just for the players, but who knows.

Blue Chips

Bob and Mark -

While I don't know the entire story behind the 1989 Donruss Blue Chip set, it is my understanding that this was intended to be a Canadian release, using the same subjects as the American "Grand Slammers" subset. The Blue Chip set was never released, though a few cards (samples/promos?) leaked out. I saw this on eBay several years ago and as a McReynolds collector, jumped all over it (how could i not for $10?)

I'm not sure if these cards were hand cut from a sheet or not - though I do find it odd that the top of the card is trimmed. Usually I try to stay away from altered cards, but given the rarity of the item, it doesn't bother me that much. I have never seen another McReynolds Blue Chip card before.

Thanks,

Todd

I was always puzzled why they didn't include Steve Trout, who was their second best starting pitcher that year. When I noticed that DaClyde mentioned that the Chicago Tribune Archives were now online, I figured I would try to find out exactly which days these were printed. I found the four sheets that I have which were printed on September 5, September 7, September 13, and September 19, but lo and behold, there was also a four card half sheet printed on October 2, which included Trout and three other Cubs. So now I have to search for those four along with the July 4, 1980 Chicago Tribune page with the Rick Reuschel/Britt Burns Scrapbook photos.

Luckily, I found the four I needed on a Buy-It-Now on eBay a couple of months ago. I still need the July 4, 1980 Chicago Tribune page with Rick Reuschel/Britt Burns.

Cliff,

Man, I love some newspaper cutouts. Those are awesome!

Just so funny to me that the papers give us the lines, or dots, etc. and we still could not cut straight back in the day. None of the newspaper cutouts I have are near straight.

I don't have any of the cutouts that are color, so that makes them even more interesting.

Thanks for sharing...

Thanks. I also picked up two others. The Williams is evidently also from 1955, and Brooksie is 1962.

Perhaps a New Yorker on N54 can shed light, but I gather these were inserts to the Sunday edition of the NY Daily News (aka the Sunday News?).http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...e88489d608.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...a9e726bc37.jpg

Was the Indians player even in the '75 Hostess set? Looks like this is what it was going to be until I guess they changed it to Lee May and opted for a different alignment.

Are you sure 1962 on the Brooksie? I don't "think" they used the block lettering on the jersey until 1963, but I could be incorrect. Either way I think those are some "GREAT" pickups.

I believe it is Tommy McCraw, who never did appear on a Hostess card. Like you said, someone there must have changed their mind and decided to go with May.

I have a version of this game with the Pee Wee and Durocher; there were a couple different editions I think. Adam Warshaw knows a bit more about it all than I do, perhaps he will post.

I might be interested in selling or trading mine as my collecting focus has changed in recent years.

My main line of collecting now is my Topps type run, which covers all sports and non-sports they issued at retail through 1980, and certain NS Topps sets featuring the more well known comic and underground artists of the 60's and early 70's. I've pretty much stopped collecting full sports sets and have been winnowing them a bit the last couple of years. I also collect Topps corporate items to an extent.

I'll try to find it to scan closer. My card room is very cluttered now, as i just moved from a room twice the size in the last year. I can't even get to a lot of the stuff still.

The Robinson is an ad pulled from some sort of magazine, I believe. It was in a lot with some others (Garvey was one I assume and probably the reason I bought the lot).

Full disclosure, most of the Sterling jumbo 1/1 patches and maybe 1-2 other high end cards are not mine and were saved for the scans. The bulk of the stuff in my photo bucket is mine though.

Would you please enlighten me about the heritage or history of the ultra rare 1959 Mickey Mantle Yoo Hoo card, found with and without a half-inch thick white strip at the bottom of the card? Presumably, the white strip was meant for Mick to autograph it, or so I interpreted the space.....

Larry, when Brigandi Coin Company of metro NYC decided in about 1987-88 they wanted to enter the fray and sell vintage baseball cards, they took out a full-page advertisement in Baseball Cards Magazine. Glowing as a beacon in the middle of the ad was a 1959 Yoo-Yoo Chocolate Drink Mickey Mantle, with the white strip. I remember it as if it was yesterday. They wanted $2,000 - $2,500, though here I am not clear in my mind. I do recall it was at least 2K, in an era when 2K purchased a gold medal card. The stated condition was Nr Mt / Mt.

That's quite an extraordinary Mick to roll out the red carpet for your coin company to be taken seriously as also a purveyor of choice baseball cards.

Naturally, I was disappointed you did not know the heritage of the white strip. Regardless, thanks for responding, bro.:D

Best regards, Brian Powell

Robert, I don't think I've ever seen a Swift's player assembled before, kinda creepy and cool at the same time.

It really looks strange if you look straight from the front. That's why I tried to take an angle shot. I picked it up off ebay for $50. It looks pretty good along with my other Aaron figures and bobbleheads.

Back in the mid-90s, I bought a VHS set of old commercials. Entertaining and interesting. Nestled in the sports commercials was on original 30-second black 'n white commercial for the Swift's Premium Franks baseball card promotion. Very cool. I looked to see if someone had loaded it up on YOUTUBE, but it wasn't there. --Brian Powell

A year prior to Brigandi, Alan Rosen and I were talking on the phone, and the subject of the Yoo-Hoo Mickey Mantle came up. In his description of the card, I vividly remember him saying it had a small white strip at the bottom. --Brian Powell

in a "Hunchback of Notre Dame" sorta way...

have a complete set w/punched-out players in zip-loc bags (I bought it that way) and IIRC, it includes
the "board" (playing field?) and the original mailing envelope*

*haven't seen it in years, but it's buried somewhere in the collection.

Thought I'd post something fairly odd that's pretty much totally out of my wheelhouse.

David,

Two very cool oddball pieces. I "think" I have an O's placemat, possibly IHOP, and I do have the O's version of that '75 piece. Wonder how many teams they produced on these things.

By the way, I miss your "A year of Lou Brock" thread. Really enjoy viewing all of the single player collection stuff especially players I grew up watching and admiring.

Jason,

Good guess, but no. Look at his '78 Topps card and see what it would look like trimmed.

I was kidding! Is it the original photo from it?

Ha! See how when individuals type something sometimes you can't tell kidding or sarcasm. :D

Correct; it's the Topps match print photo from the '78 Topps #100 card.

Time for you to start your thread "A year of the Orioles":)

I just put up another new addition, complete sheet from Milton Bradley.

David,

If I was as organized as you, or some of the other very organized individuals that have collections, I'd probably do the "YEAR OF THE BIRD". So, I'll likely wait till I have time to organize better and have some type of rhyme or reason to the postings; like you did by year pretty much. Most of my items are Brooks Robinson related, but I do have quite a bit of other Orioles items; mainly memorabilia/display type pieces. Unsure if people on net54baseball would enjoy seeing all of those items, but I guess I'll give it a shot down the road.

I'll have to check out your Milton Bradley item that you picked up. Gotta love complete sheets!
