Thank you, Rob.

I need about 30 M113s and 75 M114s, and I need 5 of the large (17.5 X 20) posters from 1957.

Congrats Rhett, the Bernard was an absolute steal. I hadn't ever seen a Schwenck before, it must be very scarce. I was busy bidding against you but gave up since I don't collect the 1912s except Portland players. Great pick-up!

Thanks all - now let's see if I can reach a little deeper into my pockets to get some REA items!! With that many quality items, you'd think there would have to be some bargains, but if history is any indication, I'll have to pay through the wazoo to get anything I want...

GregMitch34 04-16-2014 06:44 AM

REA bargain probably not to be repeated--it's no-buyers-fee for it's inaugural Fall auction last year. Only reason I went for a nice T3.

CW 04-16-2014 10:26 AM

REA's inaugural Fall auction had no BP? I was not aware of that...

Two very interesting articles in the magazine: one on PSA and ASA, and the conflict of interest the TPGs cause by grading cards, and releasing price guides. And, an article about baseball card restoration. Funny how 18 years later, these two topics are still very much at the forefront of the hobby.

Gary is right - there was an 18.5% buyer's premium, but free shipping.

Signing with his right hand?

pencil1974 04-17-2014 07:47 AM

I guess so maybe he didn't like the guy that much and just did a crappy signature, lol. What I am assuming it was already probably signed and he posed like he was signing it?

OK just looked up some photos of him signing autographs and it seems he signed with his right hand.

I have played baseball and softball for 46 yrs running. I throw and bat left handed. I write right handed. It's not that uncommon. Nice photo btw....

Especially for back when Ruth lived. As writing left-handed was considered wrong. Mainly because the ink would smear by left-handed writers.

Same here, played baseball and softball for 54 yrs, bat and throw left handed but I write right handed. I also play golf and basketball right handed.
:)

darwinbulldog 04-17-2014 09:05 AM

It's the other way for me. I'm left-handed, but I play baseball righty (at the plate and in the field) because I learned how to play by copying my dad.

I am a natural lefty but learned to do everything right handed growing up. My parents told me that I was using the wrong hand.

pencil1974 04-17-2014 09:22 AM

Yeah I had forgot that they used to tell people to switch. Thanks Leon I thought it was a good deal for $20.

I'm a right-hander for everything except handwriting. Not that big a deal.

Paul S 04-17-2014 11:52 AM

Hardly unusual for a person in Ruth's day and age, and likely at St. Mary's, to get his left hand smacked with a ruler by a nun if he was writing that way. In fact, even when I was growing up my friends in Catholic school would tell me their similar experience.
When batting I started off emulating my right handed friends. It took me awhile to get the hang of it. And then I tried batting lefty -- that was like stepping inside a Claritin commercial! -- everything is crystal clear. So I ended up a switch hitter. Today, I do different tasks with different hands, but do not consider myself ambidextrous in the exact definition of the word.

glenv 04-17-2014 12:13 PM

I'd give my left hand to be ambidextrous!

Just picked-up my first 19th Century card. What have I gotten myself into? This was an impulse buy. I've done very little research on these, but the image quality just pulled me in. I guess it was down-graded because of the stamp on the back, but being blank anyways, I think it adds to the "character":

+1. I think the only reason that I write right handing is spending my first six years in Catholic school. The nuns would rap you in the hand if you tried to write left handed!

Also, I picked this card up for the second time in the Sterling auction last night. I love the look and am glad to have it back. I had won it in last September's B&L auction and wound up trading it for four T206's. Sorry for the small scan!

Welcome to the club. I started collecting 19th century the beginning of the year and now all my other cards look boring, lol. Enjoy and ask any questions you have, there is a ton to learn about the cards!!

Won this Bill Bergen T206 last night in Lee's Sterling Sports Auction. I was born in the same hospital that Bill Bergen passed away in 17 years prior.

Just read a great SABR article on Bill Bergen which gives you a great sense of what a top notch defensive catcher he was back in the day. Here is the link to the article:
