Thanks Bill. It took some time to find one I liked. The hunt for the one you are looking for is half the fun. Good luck I'm sure there's one out there with your name on it

Congrats Rhett, the Bernard was an absolute steal. I hadn't ever seen a Schwenck before, it must be very scarce. I was busy bidding against you but gave up since I don't collect the 1912s except Portland players. Great pick-up! |

I picked up this E121/80 with a Type 2 back via eBay. I now have WaJos with 3 of the 4 types of back printing. I'd sure love to find a WaJo with a Type 3 back - heck, I'd settle for a Sam Rice, or even a Joe Judge!

April pick-up thread
Love the Mayo Cut Plug!!
Here are my two big pick-ups for April - both stud HOF pitchers, both issued in 1903: http://photos.imageevent.com/derekgr...903%20Joss.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/derekgr...03%20Plank.jpg |
Derek, great pickups! I had my eye on the Plank for several days but just couldn't pull the trigger this month.
DJ |
I'll second that, great pair of pick-ups, Derek!
|
Great Joss, was watching that one and the Goodwin one closely.
|
Love the plank.

t206 "5" and better seem to have taken off again this month, this week even more so, at least on eBay. No idea why. One of my favorites for color, had sold lower grade awhile back so happy to replace at last.

Thanks all - now let's see if I can reach a little deeper into my pockets to get some REA items!! With that many quality items, you'd think there would have to be some bargains, but if history is any indication, I'll have to pay through the wazoo to get anything I want...
|
REA bargain probably not to be repeated--it's no-buyers-fee for it's inaugural Fall auction last year. Only reason I went for a nice T3.
|
REA's inaugural Fall auction had no BP? I was not aware of that...

Nice pickups TBob.And congrats on closing in on Series 8 completion.

A couple new T206s for my collection. Thanks, Joel!
http://imageshack.com/a/img191/9940/o9s4.jpghttp://imageshack.com/a/img607/7465/asml.jpg I also picked up some educational material, the first three volumes of The Baseball Card Encyclopedia by Lew Lipset, and The Vintage & Classic Baseball Collector issue #7. http://imageshack.com/a/img845/7995/ibms.jpghttp://imageshack.com/a/img841/5991/68zt.jpg Two very interesting articles in the magazine: one on PSA and ASA, and the conflict of interest the TPGs cause by grading cards, and releasing price guides. And, an article about baseball card restoration. Funny how 18 years later, these two topics are still very much at the forefront of the hobby. |
Nice looking Devore Bill.

Not my normal pick up (first photo I have bought) but something just sort of drew me to it and the price was right as well.

I guess so maybe he didn't like the guy that much and just did a crappy signature, lol. What I am assuming it was already probably signed and he posed like he was signing it?
OK just looked up some photos of him signing autographs and it seems he signed with his right hand. |

It's the other way for me. I'm left-handed, but I play baseball righty (at the plate and in the field) because I learned how to play by copying my dad.
|
Quote:
I am a natural lefty but learned to do everything right handed growing up. My parents told me that I was using the wrong hand. |
Yeah I had forgot that they used to tell people to switch. Thanks Leon I thought it was a good deal for $20.

Hardly unusual for a person in Ruth's day and age, and likely at St. Mary's, to get his left hand smacked with a ruler by a nun if he was writing that way. In fact, even when I was growing up my friends in Catholic school would tell me their similar experience.
When batting I started off emulating my right handed friends. It took me awhile to get the hang of it. And then I tried batting lefty -- that was like stepping inside a Claritin commercial! -- everything is crystal clear. So I ended up a switch hitter. Today, I do different tasks with different hands, but do not consider myself ambidextrous in the exact definition of the word. |
I'd give my left hand to be ambidextrous!

Just picked-up my first 19th Century card. What have I gotten myself into? This was an impulse buy. I've done very little research on these, but the image quality just pulled me in. I guess it was down-graded because of the stamp on the back, but being blank anyways, I think it adds to the "character":

Also, I picked this card up for the second time in the Sterling auction last night. I love the look and am glad to have it back. I had won it in last September's B&L auction and wound up trading it for four T206's. Sorry for the small scan! |

Bill Bergen T206 (Batting)

Won this Bill Bergen T206 last night in Lee's Sterling Sports Auction. I was born in the same hospital that Bill Bergen passed away in 17 years prior.
Just read a great SABR article on Bill Bergen which gives you a great sense of what a top notch defensive catcher he was back in the day. Here is the link to the article: http://sabr.org/bioproj/person/d0f5be23 Patrick |

So got my Gehringer back from PSA For the crossover and it came back as a 5. Which I'm happy with. So glad I didn't have to sell my set I would of been heart broken. Anyway here she is. Very vivid color wish the corners were a lil sharper.
