Cool thread! Here is a link to a video in which Doug Flynn explains why he won't sign the 1986 Topps. Very good information, and he seems like a nice guy..
http://topprospectalert.com/2011/12/...e-in-25-years/ Thanks. |
I'm still holding out hope one day Wright gives in and signs.
|
Why won't he sign the 87Topps?
|
I know these guys say its for charity or whatever but I can't help but see this crap as egotistical, lame nonsense. The guy signed cards once. Those cards aren't being sold regularly to continually drum up funds for whatever charity they support. At this point its just silly. At least Flynn is actively signing for charity.
|
I would tend to agree.
Flynn could charge $5-10 each for that card and probably bring in more than he could at $500 per for a select few only. Of course, that means he has to sign more cards. Ron Kittle signs his 1984 Topps card for Charity only. He charges $25 as I found out trying to track one down years ago. Ron seems like a real down to earth guy (at least on Facebook), but he could probably earn more for the charity at a more acceptable price for that card. I understand he signs anything else for free. This is likely the toughest signed football card of the 1960s. I believe Brian Piccolo had about a year to sign his 1969 Topps card, as he died in June 1970. Frank Buncom had perhaps a month? Buncom had a second series card in 1969, and passed away on September 14, 1969.

i absolutly love this thread, has anyone ever seen a signed 1957 Maurice Stokes?
|
Any chance of a 1964 signed Jim Umbricht? I'm curious. Probably not.

I'd be hesitant on that one
I dont know the seller well, bjt doesnt look like any I've seen at first glance Sent from my SM-G930T using Tapatalk |
The seller has 99.8% positive feedback. As much as I'd love to shell out the cash for this, now isn't the best time as I'm trying to save money.

I was wondering if you had a Kinder for your set
Glad to see you do.

http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w.../psasub3-1.jpg For Red Sox players, Kinder and Vern Stephens (already mentioned) are very tough....Tony Conigliaro is fairly tough to come by even though he passed less than 30 years ago. I would imagine the toughest Red Sox (50's onward) to get would be Harry Agganis, who died in his second professional season in 55' from a pulmonary embolism. PSA's website shows 1 out there... When I saw the title I thought of a couple guys who died during their career, Lyman Bostock and Walt Bond. Bostock seems to have a handful on eBay so he's not as rare as I'd expect. Other toughies I'd imagine are: Danny Frisella, Herman Hill, Ken Hubbs, Mike Miley, Bob Moose, Chico Ruiz, Jim Umbricht, Don Wilson, etc... |
I've been looking for a 52 Al Benton for over a decade

I have a 2009 UD Adenhart that had a 3 week window. Love to sell it.
61 Fleer Cobb and 61 Scoops Cobb and Gaedel- not sure if any exist |
Toughest signed cards possible

Love that Adenhart you have. Very cool piece. I swear I've seen at least 1 copy of a Cobb 61 Fleer and I believe it was trimmed and skinned. |
Toughest signed cards possible
Adenhart was a good dude...he had tons of potential...

Puddinhead Jones - 1983 Phillies Nostalgia Nights card
In 1983, the Phillies put out a series of Nostalgia Night postcards, with Dick Perez paintings (sets are easy to pick up on eBay). On August 26, the greatest third basemen in Phillies history card was issued, with Puddin' Head Jones, Pinky Whitney, and some guy named Schmidt. Jones died of cancer at age 58 on October 18, less than two months later, in Cincinnati. Whitney died in 1987. It's rare that a Mike Schmidt autograph is the cheapest one in a bunch, but on that card it is. I have seen the card signed by Whitney and Schmidt for around $300. I've never seen one signed by Jones as well, although a dealer in Philly told me he had one that was stolen from his table at a card show in the 1990s. I can't imagine there are a lot of those--one basically would have needed to write to Jones during those few weeks he was alive and then followed up with Whitney within 4 years. I imagine a lot of people trying to collect the set signed might have focused on the active players like Schmidt during the season and then mailed to the old-timers in the offseason, by which time it would have been too late for Jones.

Jones was also a notoriously difficult signer, so doubtful a signed one exists.

1966 Topps Fritz Fisher. He only appeared in one game and pitched 1/3 of an inning. His era was 108.00. Haven’t seen any autographs of him.
|
There are some tough (87 Ricky wright) cards in the upcoming REA auction.
|
If I'm not mistaken one or two of the Callahan HOF cards are only just barely possible. I imagine Perez Steele's have a couple of nearly impossible examples as well.
|
I'd love to see a 1965 Tops Dodgers rookie card signed by all 4. I don't know if any Dennis Daboll signed versions exist, either alone or with any of the other players. He never made the MLB level and died unexpectedly at age 27 in early 1974.
|
I’d like to see a 1957 Dodger sluggers signed by all four

1949 Bowman signed by Ernie "Tiny" Bonham From Stinson
I think I have an incredibly rare signed card, possibly one of a kind? A 1949 Bowman Ernie "Tiny" Bonham. He died in September of '49. Very short window for him to sign, only months between the production of the card until his death. If someone else has one or is aware of one please lmk. Very curious, I haven't seen another yet. Jim Stinson was parting out a set of signed '49 bowman and I was able to get about 12 cards including the Bonham.

He has said publicly several times that he will not sign a first edition of that book, but you still see fake signed copies on eBay every now and then. That's when you realize how delusional some people can be when they, a) don't do basic research before spending $400 on an autograph, and b) even when presented with evidence that an author/athlete does not sign a specific item, they still reason that maybe one slipped by somehow. Maybe an autograph collector put a false dustjacket on The Road and tricked McCarthy into signing it! It's possible. |
