a few postcards and photos
7 Attachment(s)
The first is a 1908-09 Rose Co. postcard of Eddie Grant with rare overprinted advertising on the reverse. Eddie was a Harvard graduate, major league baseball player, lawyer, Army enlistee to fight in World War I, and a war hero killed in action. Look him up.
The second is not baseball, of course, but since I was posting the Grant I thought I'd include it since it's an interesting one. It's postmarked 1909. The last few are mystery photos of African American baseball coming from a photo album of 1930's+ era Atlanta material. Anyone recognize uniforms or place? For much more, navigate around http://www.sportingoregon.com/ . |
Just one pre-war card thus far this month, but I really like it. Thank you, Jason!

Scored from a small mom & pop auction house. Long story but no one there except me knew what these were. Now off to get graded. |
deuce I hope those r good...the red ruth looks weird to me?
|
Yeah, that one doesn't look good :( Something about the Gehrig doesn't either. Hope I'm wrong.

I don't think any of those cards are authentic.

I've got a 33 Goudey Ruth (#53) that I've had for a few years. I've looked it over many, many times trying to find anything "wrong" with it.
I finally boxed it up and shipped it off to SGC yesterday. I'm scared... someone hold me. |
Sorry to say it but the Gehrig is a reproduction :(
|
I didn't pay much for them so if they come back as fake, repros, etc. I'm not out an arm and a leg. I haven't even cracked them out of the screwdowns yet. Sorry about the scan. The red Ruth is a little faded but not as much as what the scan shows. Also picked up 55 Bowman Mays, Aaron, and Banks, 57 Topps Mantle, and 58 Topps #418 Mantle and Aaron.
|
Just got it in the mail today...

Always love this exhibit of Ruth.

[QUOTE=Jason;1186473]Thank you Joe I was thinking maybe I could do a Washington Team Run.
Hi Jason - Nice N172 O'Brien card. But, you really should stick to T210s until you complete all 8 series before you embark on a N172 Washington team set ('cause I don't need any more competition)!! :D In addition to HOFers Mack and O'Day, "Dummy" Hoy is in the Wash. N172 team set. And, there are a few 2-player cards, which are rather tough to find. Best, Val |

Not exactly the most famous card but one of the coolest action shots ever. Coughlin, Dietsche PC. It's an SGC 80.

While I am certain that every other card in this thread is more valuable than my latest pickup, I just cannot believe how much I have fallen in love with this little piece of cardboard. This is the first ungraded T206 I've ever owned, and as I pulled it out of it's top loader and penny sleeve tonight, and held it in my hands, the history of this little common overwhelmed me. I started to think about the travels this card must have taken. The rounded corners, scrapes, stains and dimples on the front and back tell a story. Who first pulled it out of a pack of Piedmont tobacco back in 1909 or 1910? Who may have owned this card, and where? It's a feeling I haven't gotten from any of the graded cards I've added. They, too, are beautiful, but there is something to be said for being able to feel a card in your hand, and smell it. It's just an amazing feeling. |

Random ebay items are random
http://www.net54baseball.com/picture...ictureid=12325http://www.net54baseball.com/picture...ictureid=12326 I'd been looking for a Tim Hendryx for awhile, the writing made a nice one obtainable finally. I also forgot to post this one last month back when I got it. Thanks Iggy, one of the hardest 1927 Yankees to get anything period on http://www.net54baseball.com/picture...ictureid=12327 |

Not the rarest of cards, but I love the pose and colors. I've been looking for a good deal on one in the VGish range for quite awhile. I finally found it, in a BIN on ebay of all places. I thought that was pretty amazing given the current state of BINs on ebay.

Finally Got A Good Scan
Just got the good scan done.
Still can't believe I found this card in un-mangled condition at a decent price; what some guys are asking on 1s that are very rough on the eye is wild. http://www.collectorfocus.com/images...joe-jackson-rc |
Beautifull Matt !!
Congrat ! |
nice cards Luke and Matt. I've always been a fan of the T206 Donlin in that pose as well, plan on picking one up at some point.
That Jackson is sweet for a fair graded card! |
Bill....
Great Rossman....I see uv been bitten;)
great choice in the monster :) You will love collecting T206:D |

Bill, I am also considering a Rossman that a card shop has that is also raw. I agree that it is a beautiful card. Have you heard the story about Rossman and the game he got in a fight with another player after being baited by Cobb. It is very interesting also sounds like he was a great fielder as well. His Wikipedia was interesting. |

Great cards, guys. Matt, that Shoeless Joe is unreal. That's one for the bank vault!

I was really surprised at the visceral reaction I had when I held it in my hands sans penny sleeve or top loader. Admiring them in person when slabbed is one thing, but holding them in their natural state is something else completely. The color, for one thing, really pops. And looking at it under magnification..you really get a feeling for the journey this little piece of cardboard has taken over the last century. Let me know if you pick up the one at your local card shop. |

Didn't you beat me on one almost just like that in REA a couple years ago? Great looking card, btw,.. |
Yeah, this is my second but i don't feel bad because I know you found a nice one later. :D:D:D
|
How did that card only get a 40?! I'm guessing there must be something wrong on the back?
|
T213-2 Coupons are almost always kept from higher grades due to light creases(cracks) which are a result of the cards being manufactured with some kind of lacquer coating to the front that would become damaged during the production process. Or so I have been told.
I like to collect the ones that look minty with strong corners that grade very good because of a crease. Other collectors may prefer those few cards that are not cracked but have a weaker eye appeal. My Cobb has a 1/4 inch crack upper right near the border. It is really hard to capture the flaw even with a larger scan. Since I keep all of my cards at the bank, and only look at my collection on my ImageEvent website, the creases do not bother me as much. :D:D:D |
Those Mendelsohns are off the charts, Chris. Remind of me oversized exhibits...
...must...not...chase...one... |
Yep Chris

from JVSC Auctions for my Cubs T206 master set. My 2nd Chance portrait in last few auctions from Joe. Wonderful registration, and very fair price! $140 + 4 shipping, out the door at $144. Great dealers such as this either spoil or enlighten us...:D

Oh, and Erick --- I love the cracker jacks. Every time I see a group of them like that, it really piques my interest!

Awesome card. I would like to get one eventually for my Cubs collection.

Zeenuts galore!
Huge month for me!! Finished my Zeenut "rookie" sub-set collection with these five - - apparently they all want to play catch:

The Lefty Gomez is a beauty, Derek!
|
Thank you, John, for this Joe Lake beauty. Presents better than the technical grade (there is a little crease in the lower left hand corner that is very difficult to see).
http://img202.imageshack.us/img202/1438/yqp1.png Now I am ready to start pursuing some of the Hall of Famers. :D |
That's a beautiful card Bill, one of my favorites.
|
Thank you, Chris. :)
At some point in the future, I'll add another at a little higher grade (I like the idea of a SGC 40 set). But until then, I am very happy with the one I have. It's got pretty nice centering and coloring, and the surface is nice and clean from any marks or dirt. |
Quote:
|
Thanks, Ian. :D It really is a beauty. There are no paper loss issues or marks on the front or back, and outside of the one crease, I can't see any issues that would lower the grade. I lucked out getting such a nice card.
