Great OJ's. That seller had some nice cards. I tried to win the Mays, but my bid was nowhere close.

Here are a few recent cards I did get...

Super Happy with the LOTG pickups, also really impressed with them going the extra mile in wrapping and securing the cards for shipping. They can in a box with peanuts, wrapped in the middle with large bubble wrap, inside that each card had it own small bubble wrap pouch, the card was inside a team back with a nice printed label with the details of the auction and card! Wow really enjoy all the nice extras!

I don't think I will, unless a signed T206 Cobb or signed Ruth Goudey were to stumble into my collection :). I love how it's his full name, I've never seen that on a card before if Mantle. Btw, it's a great middle name :), was my grandpas name, so I'm partial as well lol

Runscott 02-12-2013 10:20 PM

Nice card. I know that yours is super-rare, but have you ever seen a '50s Mantle card signed with his signature from that period?

You just made me think about my 'dream card' - a T206 green portrait Cobb, inscribed 'To Scott, Ty Cobb - good luck to the Houston Astros, the AL's newest team'

okay, forget that last part.

I think I have seen one, where his signature was like his facsimile signature on his '52 Bowman I believe where it is a more upright signature. I've seen a decent amount of baseballs with a rookie sig.

That would be a sweet card!

I've got his minor league era sig on a ball from 1950 and it is almost exactly like the facsimile from his old cards.. wish I had a pic or scan of it to post. Definitely does not have that loopy M that he developed over the years. On the topic of dream cards and '51 Bowman era rookie centerfielders, I'd love to have a signed Mays rookie.. and it would be really cool if it were a period sig since his autograph got pretty silly with age.. those "4"s instead of W and M.

Awesome Mantle BTW, congrats!

Wow, that's a hell of a ball! I love his minor league/rookie era sig a lot more! Yeah Mays has an ugly sig now, my signed '51 Mays looks decent for his sig now, but an era signed one would be amazing! The only era signed one I have is my '55 Killebrew and maybe a '60's Aaron on his rookie.

And thank you!

Thanks, it's been pretty thoroughly toned by the years and oily hands but for sheer sentimentality and connection to my dad, it is the most important possession I have. One of those family heirlooms that had better stay in my family until all Clarke's have vanished from this earth! I don't have kids yet, so don't have anyone/anywhere besides here to preach that yet.

Picked up these three Shoulderless Players cards. Pretty obscure set. The George Kelly was previously unknown until this one.

Here is the list of players shown on Old Card Board:

http://www.oldcardboard.com/w/should...cardsetID=1472

(1) Rogers Hornsby Cardinals
(2) Walter Maranville Pirates
(3) A. Pennock (Herb) Yankees
(4) E.A. Rommel Athletics
(5) Babe Ruth Yankees
(6) George Sisler Browns
(7) K. R. Williams Browns
(8) Ross Young (actually Youngs) Giants

Nice, Jimi! If you'e gonna get a 1st example from a set might as well be a HOFer.

Wheat Die Cut

1 Attachment(s)
Picked up this Baseball die cut of Zach Wheat. I have been collecting Wheat for about 30 years and this is the first one I have had a chance to buy. I know they arent much to look at but in my opinion they are very hard to obtain. Have seen a few team sets at different Nationals but never saw a Wheat for sale or I would have bought it. Took SCD for about 20 years and didnt see any there either. Has anyone else had trouble getting one of a player they were looking for? Thanks.

M114 Baseball Magazine Supplements - holy grail item X 2

2 Attachment(s)
I have been collecting the M113 & M114 supplements for many years, and as of today have accumulated 765 different ones, but up until last month, I had never seen an example of a Mickey Mantle.

In the most recent Henry Yee auction, he had some printing plates matched with examples of their supplements, but his Mantle printing plate did not come with a supplement, so I took this as proof that they exist, but also proof that they are hard to come by.

So, when one popped up on ebay at the end of January, with that classic shot of him batting righty, I was very happy to make it my own, even if his name is spelled wrong at the bottom.

Imagine my surprise when less than two weeks later, a second Mantle appeared on ebay, this one the classic lefty batting pose, with the added bonus of his original #6 visible. I also was happy to give it a new home.

Febuary Pickups

2 Attachment(s)
Picked up this 1961 original wire photo of Mickey Mantle. I really enjoy the press photos as they are pretty unique and the action shots are incredible. (I think I should have put this in the memorabilia section-my bad!)

This is a beautiful pic of Mantle chasing Babe Ruth's home run record during the 1961 season. I am going to get it graded and display it next to my Mantle Hartland Statue.

I also picked up the E101 Bescher in the Sterling Auction. It has a bad back but the front has great presentation.

I would say there aren't 100 out there, so that isn't a realistic goal. I know of about 10 more in collections. At most I've seen 40 over the last 19 years for sale/auction and two of those are in the collections I just mentioned. I say at most because I'm not sure the other 2-3 aren't ones that were resold over that time

Matthew H 02-15-2013 09:22 AM

I agree, I think only the most common OJs break the 100 mark.

Now that's what a 1 is supposed to look like!! Almost seems like there's more disparity in the 1-2 range than there is in 9-10

To add: I wonder if Francis just had a bad day or two in the teens, or if it was a 100+ years of gradual cumulative abuse. Congrats on the pick up though!

You guys are funny. I rarely pick up pre-war cards but thought it was amazing what this card had gone through over the years. Yet, it was clearly cherished by someone, or I don't think it would still be around 100+ years later.

John, nice pick up, I have always thought that was a bit of an under-rated Dots Miller card due to the fact that he passed away that same year (In September if I remember correctly), he joins a few others in the Zeenut set pictured in the year that they met their untimely ends.

Included in that group is the 1912 posthumous batting champion Heinie Heitmuller who contracted a fever and passed away near the end of 1912...
http://www.starsofthediamond.com/12hrkheitmuller.JPG

Also included in this unfortunate club is Laverne "Larry" Chappell who contracted the Spanish Flu during the epidemic of 1918 and passed away that same year...

Thanks Rhett. I'm not sure if you know, but I have some relatives in common with Dots, so they were really interested in seeing his last card. None of them had seen that image before, so I was real happy to finally get it.

You guys are funny. I rarely pick up pre-war cards but thought it was amazing what this card had gone through over the years. Yet, it was clearly cherished by someone, or I don't think it would still be around 100+ years later.

That Tolstoi was purchased by me a few years ago (with 2 others) for a few $$. All had the same 'look'. Couldn't stand it - even in my beater set. Upgraded all 3 and gave the Pfeffer to Rob for his Tolstoi project. He had it graded. Glad it has a new home. Don't get too close....:D
