Really like the Seattle card too.

Here's one that arrived today, very tough Shibe card.

images that tell a story

5 Attachment(s)
Some postcards tell a story that has nothing to do with runs, hits, or errors.

The first tells a story in its image alone. It speaks for itself.

The second reflects the itinerant life led by some barnstorming African American teams.

The third of Slim Sallee tells us some things about him.

The fourth is an iconic image of courage.

The last speaks for itself in the same way as the first, but says something entirely different.

holy crap, Jim. Is that written by Cy Young?

Edited to add: I can't find any Lula in relation to Cy, so maybe my eyes deceive me. And I know nothing of handwriting so....

Very cool card nonetheless. I have never seen another of the same image.

Charlie Young

Jason, per the 1940 census, Lula M. Young (to whom that postcard is addressed) was married to Charlie C. Young. But no matter, it is a very nice postcard, for sure.

Well, I was wondering if you had that postcard, Dave, and I guess you do...and that postcard of Bill James, Hap Myers and a shrunken down Rabbit Maranville is incredibly cool.

Thanks for sharing.

Hi Mark...One of the great things about postcards, there is always something new showing up and some many avenues to collect....and talk about rarity...there are less copies known of most of the postcards shown in the last couple of posts than there are Honus Wagner T206s available, with several of these cards being one of one known. It's a wonderful hobby niche with good guys involved.

Michael...we speak the same language, great stuff...I've been looking for the Speaker American Series after letting one get away from my collection a few years ago....and had never seen the Cady Underwood card, very nice! Thanks to a trade with a fellow board member I just added Cy Delivering the goods. Fun stuff.

Here's a "panarama view" of the "new" League Park in Cleveland. Measures about 5 x 31 inches, and does indeed have a postcard back. Condition is lacking, but I nevertheless was thrilled to pick it up recently. I think I'm going to have it framed, which will be a challenge. Sorry for the crappy, smart-phone photo.

Thanks, Jim.

While searching for other examples that had sold, the only one I was able to find was in a Leland's auction, maybe about 5 years ago. Is that the same one you referenced?

Just stumbled on this thread, what a great collection of postcards, it was fun paging through.

One to add, the writing on the postcard is by Tinker's first wife, Ruby. I've never seen another example of this card. I have no idea about the show mentioned on the card.

I'll add this one also - McComb's Dam Park - I'm guessing this is the park that became the future home of Yankee Stadium or the Park that still remains next to the demolished Yankee Stadium site.

Very cool Thorpe postcard, Derek. I am a Thorpe fan myself (I live 45 minutes from Jim Thorpe, Pa., and 90 minutes from Carlisle, Pa.) and have only seen copies of that postcard a handful of times. There was an unused copy of that postcard on eBay with an asking price of $2,500 or best offer for several months that just recently sold. I know in the past when I have looked up that postcard, there were only 2-3 of them graded on the combined PSA/SGC population chart.

Hi guys! This is my first post on the forum so a little introduction is in order.

My name's Shane and have collected cards and stuff since I was very young. But alas when I became a teenager all my stuff was either lost or stolen. Well now I'm 34 and married now so I thought it was about time to start over again cause not much else gives me as much joy as collecting and talking to collectors. Anyways here is a postcard I just picked up,

Anson's Colts

2 Attachment(s)
Here is a follow up to Brad's post (back in April) of Cap Anson's Colts. This is a small postcard that I think has been trimmed. I picked it up because of the Anson connection (Cap is the portly fellow in the center, back row), but also because I think the player in the bottom row, right (name on his shirt) is Fred Wehrell who played for the Anderson Electricians (So. Carolina) in the 1909 Carolina Association. I have also included a scan of the 1909 Anderson team postcard.

Enjoy,
Mike
