Andy and Jeff, here is the story on the Thorpe cards, which I've been chasing for about a decade [damn, I'm getting old]:
There were at least three and possibly four strip cards made from the same art [I can confirm the existence of three but the 4th is likely]: 1. A large set sized roughly the same as a contemporary baseball card [possibly issued in vertical strips of 3 like a W517]; 2. A strip set sold in vertical strips of ten; 3. A narrower strip set issued attached to a "tab" which may have been a redemption device; and 4. A monochromatic issue with a plain background, also issued in vertical strips, that is slightly shorter than the "normal" issue. http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...for%20site.jpg Above is the Exhibit Thorpe side by side with two of the four types of strip cards made with the same art, the large strip card (middle) and the tab-sized, left [tab missing]. The "normal" small card is the same height as the tab sized but is a bit wider, and the monochromatic issue is shorter. Here is the Thorpe with tab intact [BTW, I am chasing one of these, so if anyone has one for sale, I'm your huckleberry] http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...4%20thorpe.jpg A companion card you may want to hunt for is this card of cowboy actor William Desmond. The Indian chief on the left is Jim Thorpe. The other Indian in the image went by the stage name "Chief Thunderbird" (real name Richard Davis Thunderbird). The card helps narrow down the issue date. Thorpe, Thunderbird and Desmond appeared together in the 1931 film "Battling With Buffalo Bill. http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit..._exhibit_2.jpg |

Owens
2 Attachment(s)
One more- maybe Johnny, Chris, or someone else could give their opinion on this. The back seems to have a shadow image of Owens on the back-I won't go as far as to call it a "ghost image", but it looks more like a wet sheet transfer of maybe the black/brown? Under a loupe there are black and brown spots of ink in the shaded area. Thanks again Ed W.-

Waddell Lincoln PC
Hey Jeff P.
Yeah, the Waddell Lincoln PC is from the lot on eBay sold by Dean's Cards. They were nice enough to break up the lot so I could get the Waddell. Not sure if the other pcs are still available. Peter |
Adam.
Thanks for insight on the Thorpe cards. I had no idea there were actually 4 versions of the strip. That's awesome. AndyH . |
Clayton..

I've decided to spend my fantasy winnings on some new cards. I wanna pace myself with it though. These will be my trophies. First pickup with the winnings so-far. A nice trimmed to sh!t Zach Wheat rookie. The manner of trimming makes ZERO sense to me whatsoever. But it made it very affordable, so who am I to complain...It'll fit perfectly with the rest of my beaters
|
David
Cool looking beater in its own way. |
The mail man dropped off a couple of new additions today...
