New Feature Added
From the desk of the Monster Number Director:
1. Adding and updating the list at the beginning of the thread seems to be going well. I think it is easier to find in one location. Apparently monster collectors are not having problems with this change. 2. I have been dating changes to the master list from the beginning and have decided to add the day of each individual's last update to the list. You are free to update as frequently as you like. But if you look at the list and realize your number is out of date, it will serve as a prompt to post an update. 3. Although I'm sure some of you tire of seeing this thread bounce back repeatedly, feedback that I have received has been uniformly positive. The current system is easy for me to update. The results are in a consistent location, and I do not have to bump the thread to add updates. 4. Any suggestions about reformatting the results will be considered. I'm working from a Macbook Pro using Numbers. To copy and paste the four column updates requires that the collector column be in the fourth position. Otherwise things do not line up well. As it is now, things line up well enough, but if there is a better way to transfer spreadsheet data to a Net54 post, I'm willing to try it. 5. Thanks to all for their participation. Active collectors are movin' on up, but remember to notify me, if you sell as well. I think that I have 510 and 511 in my sights, but I'm not going to tell you where I am looking. You'll just have to keep looking at the list to see if I'm gaining on you. Frank |

My set is a general mess with lots of "cards with character." My first goal is to get the spaces filled and then start upgrading with an eventual goal of having a set in good-vg condition. I see it as a lifetime thing, an adventure to enjoy and I hope to enjoy the upgrading process as much as I have enjoyed the building process. The things I have most enjoyed collecting are friends. I would have probably never met Ted Z, Mac Webber, Marc Delpercio and many others were it not for this process. This weekend, I plan to spend a couple of hours with my son going through the set, making sure I didn't miss a common somewhere (in a set this size it happens) and making a list of my hideous two dozen, the most immediate and profound beaters. |
The beaters just keep getting better
Quote:
I too find it strange how attractive the beaters become as you near the end of your journey. Cards I wouldn't have looked at several years ago are now jewels that I covet. My next card that I covet looks like a real dog. See update. Update: I picked up this one from the kitchen floor. Great Ebay photo. See below. http://www.ebay.com/itm/221009221169...84.m1423.l2649 |

How long it take to build your set ? It is verry nice to meet other collector ! it will not happen to me i live in canada so no baseball card show here in canada. |
I'll go into how I build my set in more depth in a couple years, but here are the keys:
1) I bought my first T206 in the early 70s from Card Collector's Company. It was a Snodgrass batting. 2) I bought a little over 100 t206s for $100 in the early 80s. it included minor hall of famers and a few southern leaguers. Average condition was fair. 3) I started working on a set of hall of famers which happened to land me with a lot of T206s...including Johnson, Brown, Matty x 2. 4) I owned a shop in the early 90s. Had no intention of building a set, but worked on it some. Picked up a nice red cobb then. 5) About three years ago, I started working on a mini-monster, with the intent of getting one pose of each player represented. I was probably around 250 at the time. 6) Got into it and decided what the heck. Marc Delpercio was a very good traded. I got a couple of the variations and just decided to go for the 518. 7) a large deal...the only card I really, really regret parting with in this process (T206 AB Gandil that was a beauty) with Ted Z got a large number of the remainder knocked off...it was one of those trades that was good for both parties... 8) A trade with Chris Buckler for a trimmed Demmitt made me decide to go for the 520. 9) Stayed focused. Other than my Marshall University stuff, I have not bought much besides T206s on my want list for the past two years.I have two sets "on deck" but I think I will be working on my T206s for life. Pretty much gets me to where I am... |
verry interesting , so you work on this set since the 70's .... before my birth :) lol
It is a long way travel to build a t206 set, in the last time i bought many cards but i will probably take a little brake in the nexts months.. pderhaps buy a couple t206 a month but no major purchase until the end of the year.... I will probably collect T206 for the rest of my life too... |

I always find it interesting to hear how a collector has gone about building his T206 set. The T206 nay-sayers have valid points, but there are so many interesting ways to go about building this set, and other than those who are building 'by flip number', I haven't seen two people yet who have gone about it the same way. And once you have attained your magic number, you can then replace cards to add additional nuances (upgrade, tough backs, etc.) |
For this year, my magic number is 25%. I would like to have 25% (131 cards) of the 522 cards set by the end of 2012.

After receiving my PSA 5 young and SGC 50/4 Joss yesterday, that brings my monster up to 2!!! :D

For my part my first t206 was Jack Barry |
Quote:
I've been more of a hodge Podge kind of collector. Some autos, some rookies, some HOF, football and baseball vintage and modern. Really never tied myself down to a "type" but since joining the board, I see how many people have really enjoyed the monster, so why not go for it. I can't imagine ever buying a Wagner, and probably not a Plank, but everything else is attainable I figure, if I give it a decade or two. |
Quote:
Some card is harder than other , like the wagner, but if we keep fixed on a goal, everything can be happen anyway a nice decision you took to build a T206 set with all his way to collect. |
Frank, my second set...thus by the laws of the Monster Number thread it shall be recorded in the books...for future generations to wonder what the hell is a monster number LOL.

Wonka cracks top 20 ..... Again

wonkaticket (2) is being inserted at a level of 518. If a big four card is included, please advise. All below this set will regret dropping a notch, myself included. I have reached 511 with the addition of two more cards in the mail. Future generations should be referred to my tombstone or urn to learn of Monster number lore, where a video device will be imbedded to allow mourners to read the thread in its entirety.;) Frank |

Interesting concept. Don't really agree with the weighting commons and HOFers the same, though. I don't collect anything except HOFers and popular players. I will likely never exceed 100 T206 cards. As of now my # is 69 but 51 of them are HOFer cards.
|
Now at six, so +1
Hughie Jennings |
Not my monster #, but Chris Browne (atx840) kindly stitched together my recently completed back run and I thought this might be a cool place to post it. Thanks Chris!!! WHat a cool, spontaneous gesture for a fellow collector.

I think my monster # would be 81.... I have a long way to go.
Not sure about most expensive and least expensive....I forgot what I've paid for many cards, I'll go with these- and I may have it wrong- I may have paid more for the Lajoie/with bat but for some reason I can't upload the picture anymore. And, going off of a bad memory, I think I may have paid around $29.00 for the White? Cool thread-thanks- Sincerely, Clayton |
Still waiting for the right O'hara. Busily upgrading a little here and there.

Slowly building
Hit 508 last night.

Demmitt's Career
Nelson,
Did you know that Demmitt and O'Hara together collected a total of 7 hits after being traded to St. Louis teams in 1910? Interestingly both then played in Canada for several years as regulars, O'Hara in Toronto and Demmitt in Montreal. Demmitt made it back to bigs a couple times in later years, but O'Hara never did. I thought you might like your card even more knowing that Demmitt probably played more games in Montreal than anywhere else in his major and minor league career. |
