while my trip to the national is somewhat in question due to business obligations and the fact that much of my dry powder was used today, Buck may be the thing that tips the balance!

Can someone post a pic of Leon and Buck at the national?

So Large Ass Herzog is back in Lucas TX after a grueling 2012 National Baltimore. He joined my table partners, Jay M., Scott B, Richard M, and myself at breakfast one morning (a very good buffet), attended each day of the National set up on my table (as many members and others saw) and finally ended up at the Net54baseball Dinner. As the pictures (thanks Brett and Lyman) show he was on the podium with the Speakers at the Dinner. His diary has been updated and he is ready to fly to his next board member adventure. I just need to know where to send him.....
AND for the record, NO ONE that came up to my table actually KNEW why he is called "Large Ass" Herzog. The reason is that he has an Old Mill back. Old Mill backs have the wording "Large Assortment" near the bottom of the ad. On this T206 there are paper remnants over the last half of the word "Assortment" so all you see is "Large Ass" on the card. That is why he is Large Ass Herzog. IF anyone wishes to take him on his next adventure you can post here about it, PM me or email me. He has a lot of energy and He is ready to go!! |
Great picture!
That is funny about no one knowing about his name. I suppose the bulk of his fame came after the link to the original thread was long buried on page 1 of this thread. Here is a link to that original thread when Buck first came to Net54. http://www.net54baseball.com/showthread.php?t=135418 |
that's good to know how Buck got his name...in the few months we spent together...he never shared that with me!!!!!!
There aren't many om bucks out there?!?!?! |
I think this is one of the greatest things in the history of sports collecting...I do a monthly column in a local sports pub and the editor has promised me I could do a feature on the travels of buck at some point in the future.

Whoops, photo links were broken. Fixed now.

Large Ass has committed to going to Pittsburgh in the next few days. He is excited about visiting one, or some, major league parks. Hopefully his new keeper will take some pics for us as he continues his journey. Thanks to the other folks that inquired too. Buck will be back available soon I am sure. regards

Has anyone seen or heard from Large Ass lately?
|
Ya, any word on his travels lately? I'd love to have a chance at him to visit the College World Series this summer in Omaha, NE.

We are about two months away from the 2 year anniversary of the beginning of Buck's travels. He has been to many great sites the past two years, more than I could have imagined when we started.
I am not sure where he is currently resting but I figured I'd bump the thread back up to the top and repost the trade guidelines in hopes of re-energizing his travels. The guidelines for the trade are this: - Large Ass Herzog must be made available for trade again upon receipt. - He may be traded for multiples, but must not be traded with any other card. - He travels with a log book (I hope it still exists) that must be updated with dates and traded for info. - The traded for item(s) must remain confidential (except for those with current log book access) even to past owners. If you want to know of LAH's trade history you have to trade for him. - You must take a picture of yourself with LAH and post it on the site (this guideline quickly morphed into pics of Buck with local landmarks). - You must re-post these rules when you make it available for trade (this one has not ben strictly followed, but the guidelines are posted and available so no big deal). Here is a slideshow-type-thing I put together of his journey thus far. <a href="http://s1199.beta.photobucket.com/user/abothebear/story/9355" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa471/abothebear/story/9355/thumb/large.png" border="0" alt="The Travels of "Large Ass Herzog""/></a> |

I sent him to Brad H. after the National last year. I just emailed him and I will update here when I have one. regards
|
Large ass has been sighted. Here is a message from Brad today-
" I am traveling with my family to spring training today and will be in my office there this weekend. Thanks to your note I remembered to pack Mr. Herzog. I will get back on Net54 ASAP to get Large Ass back on his tour." . |

I'd like to meet Mr Large Ass at the National...if possible. :)

I sent an email to Brad again yesterday to see where Large Ass is. I will see if we can coordinate him to be at our table again this year at the National. He was last year and was quite well received. He even got a complimentary admission pass each day, so he's a cheap date too. (that sounded kind of weird) |
I'm just wondering where "Large Ass" is? Is my concern warranted? :)Dave.

VERY SORRY for the delay - Buck is back!
11 Attachment(s)
Hello everyone –
First of all, I'm VERY SORRY for the lengthy delay in getting these pics posted from Buck’s latest tour. I had some unforeseen health issues last fall, and my work and travel gets extremely crazy beginning in January. Thankfully, Leon sent me a few reminders about Buck’s whereabouts, and I was finally able to track him down (I haven’t done anything with cards lately and quite frankly, I’d forgotten I had him!) Anyway – here is what Buck “Large Ass” Herzog has been up to… Since Buck is former Brave, I thought it would be interesting if he joined one of the most popular Braves of all time for the last few weeks of his playing career, so Buck and Chipper Jones spent some time together in September and October, as Chipper wound down his final weeks as an active player. (I'm not sure how to separate the photos with text in between, so here's the full description of his travels, with pics below.) Photo 1) On September 7, 2012, Buck went to Citi Field in New York and joined Chipper in the parking lot, at the location of the former Shea Stadium home plate. Chipper did a TV interview where he took the reporter and the viewers through his memories of his first career home run in 1995 at Shea. Buck recalled that reporters in his day were not nearly as attractive as they are today… Photo 2) Buck enjoyed a three-game series at Philadelphia’s beautiful Citizens Bank Park in late September, including this beautiful day game in 9/23/12. Photo 3) Buck concluded the regular season with a trip to Pittsburgh's PNC Park in October (Buck informed me he'd been here before with a fellow Net54 member, but was glad to be back). He enjoyed visiting the statue of his old friend Honus Wagner, and being on the field for batting practice and to see Photo 4) Chipper receive a gift from Andrew McCutchen and the Pirates. Photo 5) Buck was passed around among several Braves players in the locker room at PNC Park. They were intrigued by his tour and his story. Fellow card enthusiast Tim Hudson spent a lot of time with Buck, and Photo 6) 2011 Rookie of the Year Craig Kimbrel was fascinated by the “Large Ass” line on Buck’s back. Photo 7) On October 4, 2012, the Braves held a workout at Turner Field and Tim Hudson took Buck on the field for batting practice. Hudson (center) was joined by fellow card lovers (L-R) Cory Gearrin, Brandon Beachy, Craig Kimbrel and Freddie Freeman. Photo 8) A day after being knocked out of the playoffs, Buck went to Turner Field on a quiet Saturday morning to help Chipper Jones clean out his locker for the final time. Photo 9) Buck hangs out in Chipper's locker for a while before it's packed up...Can you find him (baseball card version of Where's Waldo)? Photo 10) Buck says goodbye to a Chipper Jones jersey, before it is sent to the Hall of Fame. This is the jersey Chipper wore on 7/3/12, when he went 5-for-5 vs. the Cubs. Photo 11) Buck hangs out with legendary manager Bobby Cox in spring training, March 2013. Okay - so who's next? I'm taking requests for Buck's next home. Please let me know via PM if you'd like to have him and I'll pass him on...Before I forget him again! |
Incredible!

Whoa!
It's gonna be tough for the next guy to beat those pictures. Fantastic!

By the way when this winds down I was hoping I could be last (as I was the first) so I could get pics of Buck with my sons again who have already changed dramatically since I did this two years ago :) when george gets all this back he is going to have the most popular t206 ever!

Wow just wow! Absolutely incredible!

I was very concerned about large ass...as we have spent time together and had become like family...but...WOW!!!!! Those pics are quite impressive...you must have quite the pull at the ol' ballpark!!!!!
In Large Ass's absense...I took his teammate...Bill Sweeney with me to Israel...we just returned yesterday!! Here are a few pics of him visiting Qumran where the dead sea scrools were found and one of us hiking near the en gedi spring in the mountains above the dead sea. We had a great trip!!!! |
Peter, those pics are fantastic!
|
thanks eric...got a few more just need to resize them...they're too large!!!!
|
Amazing stuff! You know it’s a sports card forum when the hot brunette reporters lower half is chosen to be blocked by the graded card in the shot vs. Chipper Jones’s back side. :)
Great stuff Peter that last shot is really amazing. Cheers, John |

In re-reading George's original guidelines this morning, I realized I had failed to a) post a pic of myself with Buck; b) re-post the guidelines to refresh everyone on the general rules. This is a picture I took with my favorite little collector - son Jack (age 8) - who is holding Buck. I'm holding my favorite card in our entire collection - Jack's 2013 baseball card! (sorry for the poor quality - shot was taken a while back with my phone camera) |
I took Buck to Wrigley this week. The weather was great.
Unfortunately the Cubs won. It was a good time nonetheless. Pictures to follow. |
Here we are at the entrance to Wrigley. Assisted by my 6'5" brother.

George, that is awesome. Thanks for the update with pictures and everything. Ya'll look like you had a great time!!
I was hoping to get Buck back to go to the National and join the Net54baseball dinner again this year. He had such a good time on the podium with the speakers last year I thought he would want to do it again. Last year he had his own stand on top of one of the cases at our table for the whole show, other than at the Dinner. A lot of people got to see him for the first time. LMK if he is spoken for, for the time of the National, which is Wed July 31 through August 4th.... I would need him at least a day before that. Thanks again for taking care of him. And Sean, I think Buck still has some legs .......but certainly it would be only fitting if you ended up with him for a while near the end.... Although, it is yours George, so of course you have final say....and maybe he should eventually rest in your possession since you bought him :). |
I think he should definitely keep going. He can travel forever. I only got him back so I could bring him to this game... and to see the log book.
He is not yet spoken for, Leon, PM me an offer and your address and I'll get him in the mail. It would be great to get him back to the National. |

Babe used it as a crutch to help him out on the field as he made his final public appearance before his death (according to the museum guy). <a href="http://s1199.photobucket.com/user/abothebear/media/The%20Travels%20of%20Buck%20Herzog/IMG_2060_zpsc7bd83fe.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa471/abothebear/The%20Travels%20of%20Buck%20Herzog/IMG_2060_zpsc7bd83fe.jpg" border="0" alt="2013/07 Bob Feller Museum 3 photo IMG_2060_zpsc7bd83fe.jpg"/></a> He is now on his way to Leon's. If all goes well he'll be making new friends and meeting old ones at The National next weekend. |

Got to see (perhaps) the first game with four 400 home run guys in the starting lineups. And watched Ichiro foul off a case of balls before flying out. Buck will likely sleep on the train to Baltimore. After a day or two of rest, he'll be ready for travels with a new board member. If you'd like ol' LAH, send me a PM. |
Looks like he had a good time. I would like to have him in Dec. when I go to the Keys to go deep sea fishing and next Dec. when I go to Cairns Australia to go fishing for big black marlin. He would have fun there since we will be staying on the boat inside the GBR at night. I wander if he knows how to scuba dive? That's in the future though so others can show him the rest of the world in the mean time.
