Posted By: Joe_G.
1887 Tomlinson Jimmy Manning Cabinet
As always, I’m interested in 19th Century Detroit items. As such, the Tomlinson cabinet of Manning mentioned above is of interest and has my attention but I’d like to point out a couple observations. While the seller has been very gracious to my inquiries and enjoys superb feedback, I’d like to clear up some discrepancies (or at least gray areas).

- Seller refers to Manning as a "World Champion Detroit Wolverine utility player" which, I guess, is a true statement. Another fact would be Manning was the teams worst performer with a 0.192 BA and .742 fielding percentage in 13 games (10LF, 3SS).
- Manning doesn't appear on the team composite "Champions of the League" cabinet.
- Perhaps most importantly, the Bennett Tomlinson mentioned on sellers eBay listing did not sell for “about $3500”. Just under $2850 is more accurate. The high premium realized for the Bennett card likely had something to do with Bennett being a HOF hopeful (arguably the best defensive catcher of the 19th Century) and the card being in better condition (no photo blemishes / chip). The other most recent Tomlinson cards sold on eBay realized far less, $360 for this very card last month (wish I noticed it then – item #6131302045) and a couple hundred for a Baldwin.

I realize some of this is minor and may backfire in my quest to obtain the card, but I just want to make sure everyone is on the same page (at least those interested in the card). Best of Luck.

- WANTED -

Detroit N172 Old Judge Cards:
(there are others, but most interested in the following 13 members)
- Lady Baldwin
- Dan Brouthers
- Pete Conway
- Charlie Ganzel
- Charlie Getzein
- Ned Hanlon
- Hardy Richardson
- Jack Rowe
- Sam Thompson
- Larry Twitchell
- Bill Watkins
- Stump Weidman
- Deacon White

- TRADE MATERIAL - (for above items)

Several graded and more ungraded Old Judges including duplicate Detroits.

Regards,
Joe Gonsowski
twinturbo@comcast.net
Posted By: Joe_G.
Rob, I do know he frequents the board and I respect him as a dealer and contributor as such. And yes I am interested in this card. My post was 100% honest and factual. I simply corrected his statement on the Bennett Tomlinson selling price, gave some background info on Manning, and stated that he doesn't appear on the team composite that has become well known (auctioned in Mastro April '04, REA May '04, & Mastro Dec '04).

I am thinking about bidding on the card but believe the misrepresentations might make the card too pricey. I simply stated some facts and hope the seller would agree with them. I don't see how I've given myself an unfair advantage. I apologize to anyone I may have offended, if the board believes this is in bad taste I can remove the post.

Regards,
Joe Gonsowski

Posted By: Brian H (misunderestimated)
I just want to add that based on my experiences I seriously doubt there was any imporoper or malicious motive behind any of Joe's post about the rare cabinet card. Joe G. specifically collects Detroit Wolverines cards, knows the history of the 1887 championship team well, posts frquently and never friviolously and from my limited experience is an honorable guy who was simply sharing his knowledge.

Buy/Sell/Trade - December 2004
Posted By: Jason
First, thanks to Rob (ramram) for his kind words. 2nd I have no problem with someone stating the truth, which Joe did about the $2,850. I am not a specialist in post 1870's cards so I pay scant attention to cards dating after that period. I could have sworn that the Bennett went for $3500 but it is one of those things that you only half remember if it's not your main collecting area. Yes, I should have checked before stating it on the ad but I assure everyone it was not done to mislead.

So, I have no problem with the truth but I am slightly disappointed with the motive if it was just aired to keep the price low for a prospective bidder.

I respect Joe and know he is a very experienced collector but what he states about the prowess of Manning is immaterial. This is a very rare card from a very rare set and yes, stars command a premium but this is not just any common player card. If you want to amass the Tomlinson’s set you need this card and although I may be corrected, I have not ever seen another Tomlinson’s Manning card for sale. I also never stated that Manning was on the team composite card either. His picture was taken by Tomlinson at the same time as all the other Detroit players but was left off the final composition. He was still a Detroit player and was still important enough to have had an individual cabinet made of him.

Regarding how much I paid for the card - it was my good fortune that I spotted it after the seller promoted the card poorly and inserted it into a less than visible category. People are envious of the deal now but the prospective bidders could have had the card then but didn’t see it. Just because it went for the stated amount then, does not mean that it is the actual market value. I got it well below its true value and it’s as simple as that. I am sorry if that value is beyond certain collector’s reaches or expectations but the informed market will determine where it goes.
Posted By: Joe_G.
Thanks Jason, I support most of your comments. I have no problem bidding against others on a level playing field. My concern was/is some bidders may have taken your listing verbatim without knowledge of the Bennett sale, Manning the player, and Tomlinson cards in general. Normally I'd just say "buyer beware", "shame on the ignorant", but your add includes some misleading information. I'm sure it wasn't intentional, but still misleading none-the-less.

I was not trying to state the cards current market value was equal to your purchase price last month. You certainly stumbled across a nice find on the "electronic flea market", no one can hold it against you for taking advantage of a nice find.

When I shared the same items with you privately and no changes resulted to your listing here or eBay, I simply took it the next level and posted them myself.

And for the record, in case anyone cares, the Manning card is an 1886 cabinet. The team composite is from 1887. Tomlinson changed to a very different mount (front & back advertising) between 1886 & 1887. The production and distribution of the team composite cabinet was quite different than the 1886 Manning card and I wouldn't consider them part of the "same set".

Lastly, it's not that the card is "beyond my reaches". I simply have to treat it like anyone else on this forum and weigh what value it has to me. I'm sure the card will do quite well. All this advertising should send it past Bennett's realized price

Regards,
Joe Gonsowski
