This is a Great Post/Poll

I actually surprised that the group is more towards the younger side.
I would have thought that it was more weighted more towards the older crowd.

Means the collectors are evolving and new blood is either coming in or coming of age.

By the way Love the Henderson Facts one of my favorite players. Loved how he used to snag fly balls with his showmanship

Damm, and to think some dude was screaming at me last week about all the 30 year olds obsessed with vintage cards.

nineunder71 12-01-2021 08:43 AM

That was me :D

And I’m kinda thinking that back and forth may very well have spurred Leon to start this thread...........Leon?

Either way, I’m glad he did, cheers Steve

‘And to think some dude’ damn, you sound pretty hip this morning

Edited,,,,actually, my mistake, another thread was started for a different reason. This one was only started because I was curious.

Have been into cards since I was a little kid and always had an interest in vintage, but finally dove in about 5 years ago. After hearing my late father refer to certain cards/sets over the years, it became a want to finally chase some of those cards when my finances allowed. I love the chase

What is older than vintage? Decrepit, I guess. I ,too, turned 78. My first pack opened was a "51 Bowman.

Why that would be CLASSIC!

485 votes so far and not 1 person between 16 - 21. I am not sure what that means except maybe that age aren't into vintage baseball cards?

16 was when I bought my first T206s.....Bresnahan, M. Brown & Keeler for $10 total back in 1979. I went on to get pretty much all the T206 HOFers, as well as several other pre-wwII HOFers, between the ages of 16-21.

I went to a 9 year old baseball tournament this weekend. I can assure you that a walk and two or three passed balls is better than a hit, because the kids were better on ground balls and throwing batters out at first, but a walk was as good as a triple and often resulted in a run.:D

3,055 Hits
+
2,190 walks
=
5,245 times on base
-
299 home runs
-
66 triples
-
510 doubles
=
4,370 singles and walks

Henderson stole 1,406 bases.
-
3rd 344 times
-
home 4 times
=
1,058 steals of 2nd base.

1058/4370
=
24.21% of the time his single or walk became a de facto double. That's astounding...

Sixteen was right around when I got out of cards. Wasn’t sure what the girls would think. I got back in around 19-20, but didn’t have serious money to put towards the hobby until I was around 22.

dacubfan 12-01-2021 06:58 PM

64 years older than when I had my picture taken with Duke in Ebbets Field in 1957.

I think they are on Twitter. There is a big hobby presence there. I also agree that it is hard to buy vintage. If you don't know baseball history, and only know Ruth, Dimaggio, Mantle.... those cards might appear to be out of reach. Personally, I wanted to collect players who were playing. Griffey, Larkin, Jeter. It's exciting to follow a player in their career. Once they retired I didn't want to collect post-career cards. So then I moved to vintage because I had more money to spend.

Rickey is the man no doubt, but this one can't be accurate. Sox were over 100 years old by 2002.

Cool seeing this card posted earlier. I never realized my Chong Modesto Henderson had come from a board member. I was able to win it with a snipe bid from a fishing plant's galley in remote Akutan, Alaska. It was probably the only 30 second window internet worked for me on that entire trip. I'm roughly its age, 44, though born late December (like Rickey) 1976.

Collecting my whole life, got pretty serious around 11, off and on through HS, then really serious again late college when eBay had become a thing. It kinda felt like cheating back then, but it was amazing to chase all the stuff you'd never see in the local card shops.

Not sure where you got this from, but it isn't close to being correct. From baseball-reference.com, the Red Sox had a total of 7624 stolen bases from 1901-2001.

jchcollins 12-02-2021 09:20 AM

44. Actively collected /collecting between ages 9-15; 21-26, and now 37 to present. I guess I'm on "phase III", LOL.

The great thing about THAT game was Gregg Zaun 'called his shot' - at the behest of a wonderfully loud left-field crowd. Zaun, normally a catcher, was playing left-field and received a HUGE ovation when he returned to his position after the shot. It was incredible to see!

At the time, the 50K crowd-size, was the biggest ever for an Induction- I believe it was surpassed with the Ripken / Gwynn crowd, but there sure were lots of port-a-potties there...and Ben-n-Jerry's trucks too!!

The ceremonies had to be moved to nearby soccer fields.

That was the first and only return for me to the area where I had been born 44 years prior.

We were going to also take the time to visit Syracuse, where we lived back then, and Rome, where I was actually born...but...there was this thing called Woodstock '99 and we were all glad we didn't venter out that way.

.

Wow, I've not seen pictures from those angles before. More crowded than I imagined. One of my buddies went that day and brought me back some souvenirs, but it would have been cool to be there in person. Thanks for posting.

And I'm familiar with Greg Zaun...he spent a couple years with the Royals in the early 2000's. He was exactly the type of non-descript player that filled the Royals rosters between their World Series years of 1985 and 2014, 2015.

As for Cooperstown, I'm hoping maybe Salvador Perez will sneak in one day, and give me another opportunity to watch a Royals player get inducted.

I'm guessing the majority of us took a break around that 16 - 21 age.

We got hooked as 10 year olds, got distracted by more exciting things in high school/college, and then eventually found our way back due to the nostalgia of our 10 year old selves. I definitely took that path.

Serves me right for posting before I had my morning coffee. :o From his wiki, he had more over his career than the Sox had over that same timeframe, so from June 1979 to 2002.

Yep. Describes me to a T. I found some of the first online auctions (pre-eBay, think dial-up AOL...) in college in the late 90's. I saw the vintage cards I had cherished as a kid in the late 80's and was immediately smitten again.

I am 61 years old. My first year collecting was in 1967 at 7 years old. That 1967 set is such a beauty!

I started collecting when I was 7 (1975 Topps set) and continued until going to college. I started up again in my late 20s when I had a job with some disposable income to spend on cards, and it's gone on from there for 25+ years now.

Hirbonzig 12-02-2021 11:18 AM

54 and got back into collecting about 7 years ago. Live about 15 minutes away from Addie Joss’s birthplace.

Ah, makes sense. That's still a very manly feat. I really hope that stolen base make a comeback. I think they will.

249. Hemlinegevity (also Puberty Derailment)
How ‘all’ kids collect cards from early on in grade school up until they start chasing skirts sometime in middle school, only to then pick up the hobby again decades later.

To paraphrase the late author Ursula LeGuin when she was about 80: "You're only as old as you think you are. You know who says that? YOUNG people! You never hear anyone over 70 say it because it's stupid".

Well, I'm pushing 68 and you won't here me say it either. Getting old sucks. The only good thing about it is you get to be a gripey old cuss who doesn't give a damn what other people think of you.

41 and got back into collecting about 11 years ago after being a kid of the junk wax era. Learned ,y lessons and only collect vintage and prewar

Congrats and good luck. Hopefully you find a good card/memorabilia shop along the way

54 here.

brianp-beme 07-01-2023 07:08 PM

We should have another poll, because in the 18+ months since this one was posted, some of us may have moved up an age bracket.

Brian (mysteriously I have moved down...perhaps I stumbled across the Fountain of Doofus)

Hard to believe I'm now in the 2% category. Seems like only yesterday everybody was wondering if generations following us would have any interest in this stuff.

notfast 07-02-2023 06:56 PM

I think this is more of a gauge on who uses forums vs who collects vintage.

Forums are very dated and the majority of people are using social media instead.

quitcrab 07-02-2023 07:17 PM

The bar graph is a perfect bell curve !
I turn 57 this week . Scott

REDSOX42 07-02-2023 07:35 PM

Just turned 81...bottom of the pack!

Fred 07-02-2023 07:55 PM

Why not just start a new poll and then we can compare to this older poll and hope the older age groups keep pace with the previous poll.
