I'm sure it unintentionally served the same purpose in the art world and other niches. I'm not saying it doesn't suck, but you can't expect every buyer and seller to want their name broadcast to the world. That means it comes down to the ethics of the auction house. Unfortunately even at the very top of the auction industry there has been shenanigans (read up on Christie's and Sotheby's colluding on consignor rates) I'd say I don't know why the auction business seems to attract so many bad apples, but that would be disingenuous. I will say the longer I'm around the more I wonder about ALL business categories being more crooked than ethical. |
