Same here, I wonder if they saw a big inflow of subs once word got out before the price increase.

Edit: My order just got logged. It has an expected ship out date of 3/30/21 too which is nice so I have an idea of when to expect my cards back.

Jcosta19 03-09-2021 02:17 PM

My 7 card order ($15 per card) submitted on March 3rd just hit post grading status today.

Very impressed so far. The order had several sizes and types of cards (t201, t206, 33 Goudey, 36 National Chicle, 48 Leaf, and 1 modern card) hopefully post grading isn't too bad.

The $25 per card will make the process go even smoother.

Jeff, SGC puts the submission in the system as soon as you make payment. If it has been 'delivered' per USPS but they have not registered it as received, you probably want to take action with the post office. this is exactly the reason I have private insurance.

I also have a submission they received this week. The ETA they gave me is March 30, and frankly I expect it earlier.

PSA vs SGC

Don’t misunderstand thinking I love PSA. I just don’t see SGC as an option for post-war cards. Their slabs are boring and easy to compromise. Most importantly their resale value isn’t there MOST OF THE TIME.

I view PSA’s registry (which I’m not part of) similar to what Apple offers. It’s almost a cult and can’t be penetrated.

The younger people I talk to don’t ever mention SGC. They use PSA and Beckett. I honestly believe HGA is onto something offering a slab to complement these colorful modern cards. I’m hoping both CSG and HGA become viable.

Just my 2 cents.

Beautiful! Thanks for sharing. I wish that I was waiting for a package like that! sadly I missed the $15 cutoff. I've got 40+ '33 Goudeys in PSA slabs ready to be crossed. Does anyone know if there is any indication from SGC that something other than $25/card pricing is on the horizon, bulk sub or some kind of special? $25 to grade commons is just not feasible, I was already hesitant at $15/card.

Chad, Thanks for enjoying my mail day! I've had success with SGC just emailing or messaging them and asking them. Tell them exactly what you told us, you wish you had done the $15 and that you feel the $25 is just too high for your commons. My hunch is they might offer you a deal. In those cases, I'd just send an incomplete order form since its a deal you get from them, and mark the paper that you got permission to send at X amount per and to charge a card when they get the order.

I think you might get success with SGC. Worst case they say no but they will actually get back to you! Thanks! Mike

PS Goudeys would look so nice in their new holders! Good luck!

Just updated with received status today, suppose to be yesterday, but it's my fault. There's discrepencies between what submit and what i mailed. I find out right away i finish the submit, PSA can correct it on their website but SGC doesn't. So I did get a human call from SGC. and they took care of it right away, ETA ship back 3/31

the charge is on the invoice but haven't seen it on my PP/credit card yet. i have the original submission invoice that lists it as $15/$10, so we'll see how they choose to handle it. either way, done with SGC at $25 each.

I think March 5th, I think you should be able to talk to them to honor back the price when you submit
The one i submitted on march 4th, i ask them to correct and on website it shows the new price, but i paid with paypal not credit card. will see what they say, but they should be honoring the old price since we submitted before the price hike

how is that possible? They charge you when you submit online based on the invoice. My submission was March 2nd, and I paid the invoice they gave me based on $15 a card. They are not going to charge you higher than the invoice.

Why is the $25 price important? that is market rate for grading... at least you get your cards in 2 weeks. You should be comparing $25 to PSA/BGS express which take weeks(if not months) and charge you multiples more.

My submission was received on 3/9, and they gave me a date of 3/30. I expect it a week earlier.

Jcosta19 03-10-2021 03:48 PM

Doesn't SGC charge as soon as you make an invoice? Even before you mail the cards?

hey bud, yes it may just be a glitch with the website where everything auto-lists as $25 now. my order was already paid for ($85 for 4 cards/1 reholder/shipping), but the order on my submissions says $140. i assume it's just a mistake but will keep an eye on it.

SGC is clearly the market leader in returning the cards these days, of that there is no doubt. but i've only used them for older cards that i just wanted slabbed since i like the all black look. for anything i'm considering selling off, i'm going PSA, regardless of the wait time.

bobbyw8469 03-10-2021 06:07 PM

I refuse to pay $25 to grade a card. I will just wait for a special and sub the way I always have done.

I can't see paying that either for most cards.

And for a company that desperately needs a decent registry, that won't help.
One of my submissions way back included some really nice 81 Topps commons, figured it was worth a try on some more modern stuff on a special. At the time, a registry was pointless for those, since they had only graded maybe 25% of the set.
At $25, that's going to become a very static statistic.

Isn't a registry just about volume? Even as the #3 grader, I am sure SGC is doing hefty volume in today's market. As long as they are collecting the data, they can always put it together at some point. building these systems take time, but it seems they are making the investment.

I noticed on my last submission, SGC has all of my cards on file with pictures, through a link called "My SGC SellerReadyImages (Expanded Pilot)". Seems like they might be setting up a marketplace of some sort. Maybe PSA/BGS collect this info as well? I am not sure, but it's a really good idea.

What I can tell you is that Rome is not built in a day. But the steps SGC is taking is definitely building a better product and experience.

I have said it before and I will say it again, I am not able to get deals on SGC cards. So I understand people look at the data and see discounted pricing. but IMO this is due to a lack of sales volume all together on specific cards.. I will buy ANY pre-1980 hall of famer in an SGC new slab at a 1-grade PSA discount (assume of course the card is properly graded). I am always looking so please PM me.

Not really. There has to be volume to support it initially, but the main point is to drive prices by getting people to compete for the best set. PSA has pretty much done that really well (And I'm not a fan at all)

I looked at when I posted the 81s here, and it was in 2017. I'd thought it was longer ago.

People can't compete for "best set" if it's essentially impossible to complete the set graded. PSA has enough graded they don't need more cheap commons being graded. And that bulk came from both bulk submissions, and the massive submissions of some dealers.
SGC doesn't really have any of that, so finishing a big set graded would be expensive. At the old specials price, an 81 Topps set would cost just over 5000 just in grading fees. At the new price... 18,150... Not counting variations if you wanted a master set. I can't see anyone doing that.

Rome wasn't built in a day, but it wouldn't have been built at all if bricks were $25 each.

Buying SGC

I think a couple of you guys are missing the point. I assume we are all willing to buy SGC graded cards. That’s because they are selling at a discount vs PSA. THAT’S THE POINT!

Why submit to SGC if their cards are selling at a discount vs PSA?? I don’t care how quickly they turnaround a submission.

DISCLAIMER: I am NOT talking about all cards and definitely not pre-war. I am definitely talking about all cards 1960 and later and as previously noted pretty much every post-war card.

jimmer77 03-14-2021 07:17 AM

I agree with Dan here. I recently picked an SGC card for 0.99 on ebay, the same card in PSA was over $20.00

Oscar_Stanage 03-17-2021 06:58 PM

On the topic of SGC...

When I lookup a slab on the website, SGC lists the grading date. this is helpful because regardless of old/new slab, I can see when the card is graded.

I do not believe Beckett or PSA provide this info. Is that correct, or am I missing something?

Something that should be known IMO because obviously in the last few years grading standards have changed across the board

When I perform a cert lookup for BGS/BVG cards, I see the date on which the card was graded.

Final update: just received the grade and shipped , total 9 business day
received on the 9th, shipped on 19th, for this price, it's amazing service.
Grades are consistently fair. a few cards are a little lower than I'm hoping but did have exepectation of the receiving grade.

My premium1(1k grading fee) sent to PSA took them 3 business day. Took them 2 days to enter into the system. I would say SGC exceeded my expectation.

For those who worry about their holder or label not enough security, I believe sooner or later SGC will include the high resolution of the scan when you do cert lookup. That will be highest security of any holder since you can match the card with the scan of front/back. Right now every single card is scanned and you can see it in your sgc profile.

Eric, that timing is incredible... Yes, I mentioned here that they scanned my cards in as well... I was not sure if this this something PSA/BGS did as well? but maybe not.

My last order was received by SGC on March 9, and I will have it on Monday. Just as in my 1st submission, they hit my grade estimate on 80% of the cards. they are extremely accurate and consistent.

SGC is building a serious business and collectors should take notice. The PSA re-sale premium is based on Greater Fool Theory and won't last forever.

dio 03-19-2021 05:14 PM

I think people will eventually recognize sgc and the value will increase. I think on grading part they're on par or even better than psa because of the consistency.

Nice Mantle Fred, I found a comparison on Ebay that has a Buy it Now of 42k and 35 current watchers. Not sure what it is they are watching? They must enjoy roller marks, wax stains on back, and coffee or water stains on lower left borders? I'd say you'd do quite nicely right now......

Reading this post has swayed me to give SGC a try with a few of my bigger cards now (Aaron RC, 50B Robinson). I actually like their holders more and I’m not worried about value relative to other slabs. I actually feel more comfortable buying SGC over PSA as of late, as PSA seems to be all over the place with consistency. Looking forward to my results with them.
