Even though I bought many cards and coins this year, I can only say I have one favorite (how could one have more than one favorite?). Anyways after watching The Sandlot a million times I knew I had to eventually get a signed Babe Ruth baseball. My budget was small which makes this a tough goal to reach, but I found one here on the board.
http://www.net54baseball.com/picture...ictureid=26052http://www.net54baseball.com/picture...ictureid=26053 What makes this one so special is not only is it signed by Ruth on the sweet spot, but it is also signed by Walter Johnson on a side panel (Thank God they are PSA/DNA certified!). Not only being signed by these two legends, its a 1932-1933 William Harridge Reach OAL baseball and it's the last year for the red and blue stitches. It may not be the boldest of signatures, but knowing that they held this ball at one time is pretty cool. I'll be keeping this one away from my son's just in case they need a ball for batting practice! |

Here is mine - easily my favorite pickup of 2018, and really of all-time as well . . .

Some amazing pickups here. This year, I snagged my white whale, the T209 II Thompson! Still excited about it...

Stunning Mathewson, Scott!
Jason B., that US Caramel Ruth is unreal, as well as your 33 Goudey, Rob. And I can see why you chose that ball, Jason. Love the huge Ruth Signature. |
This was one of my most fortunate years to pick up Jim Thorpe items and one of my favorites is this early 1920’s baseball lineup between Thorpe’s Indians and Green Sox.

The Boston Store Wheat is the only one slabbed by PSA. The Crawford was my first Net54 purchase.

Williams was part of a group of African-American fighters in the 147# and 160# classes (welter and middle) nicknamed "Murderers' Row": Charley Burley, Lloyd Marshall, Williams, The Cocoa Kid, Jack Chase, Eddie Booker, Aaron Wade and Bert Lytell. The champs of the time refused to fight them, so they ended up fighting each other dozens of times (62 in all). Five of them have been elected to the HOF so far: Burley, Marshall, Williams, Cocoa Kid and Booker, and collecting them for a HOF set is a real challenge. Booker, Burley and the Cocoa Kid have no known cards; I had to settle for career-issued photos. Marshall appears in the 1940-70 Boxing News set from the UK. Williams has a 1947 Montiel card. This postcard is the first I've ever seen for Williams. It is an AZO four squares back (1924-49 per Playle's). The weight notation and format suggests that this was a self-issued postcard and it dates to his days in the early 1930s when he fought as a lightweight): http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...man%20RPPC.jpg A better man than all of us: http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...kson-Brown.jpg Jeff Dickson was an American boxing promoter in Europe in the interwar period, elected to the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2000. This British 1930s RPPC shows him with fellow HOFers Thil and Brown. In 1943, Capt. Jeff Dickson was killed in action over Germany while serving in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. |

..1936 R314 Goudey Wide Pen Premiums Type 3 Borderless ---those two mugs had eluded me for years ; the 1952 Star Cal Decal "Busby & Zarilla" has re-defined the term "rare" all by itself...... I know my phone is going to be ringing off the hook tomorrow.....do you kids even still say that ? .. |
Very cool, Adam. You have such eclectic taste.

Great stuff everyone! The Tip Top Wags was probably my single favorite pick up of 2018, largely because it's not a card I ever thought I'd own. It is pretty mesmerizing to see that portrait and background color combo in hand.
T227 Cobb, 1926 Exhibits Ruth 1914 CJ Alexander are my other favorites this year. Attachment 339001 Attachment 339000Attachment 339004 Attachment 339002 |

This pales in comparison to some of the great items listed in this thread but, like MikeGarcia, I have been hunting an elusive R314 Type 3 of Chapman/Werber (No litho variety) for the longest time, as did my father before me. While not the most expensive pick up of the year, it was certainly the favorite.

It’s amazing what diverse collections there are out there and what great 2018 purchases that everybody is posting! I Ran out of room to include my Thorpe baseball pickups so here they are.

I've shied away from Joe D cards in the past. This year, I picked up a sharp Wide Pen from Net54 for a good price. Great way to get two HOFers!

This just arrived in time to squeeze into the 2018 pick up thread.
Thanks to Tony C. |
That is one fine looking 2.5 my friend. Happy New Year!

Thanks Ryan! It's almost half as cool as your 6. ;)

HOLY SMOKES!!!!
that GC is a blazer:eek: BIG congrats!!! my theory watching the green cobbs over the last few years: 5 th big card in the set....Wagner, Doyle, Plank, Magie, Green Cobb looks like this is becoming a reality.....green cobb will stay right behind the Magie in price and collectability.... get them greens while you can....they slowed down a bit, but will still keep appreciating right behind Magie...... A Magie in a 1 is a 6k-8 k card easy.....a green cobb similar maybe 3k....still more room to grow, then trail consistently behind the Magie.... Cobb- like Mantle and Ruth transcends the hobby.....it's a no brainer.... watch the other cobbs follow suit |
T206 Double-Name
|
Thanks Johnny. I'm stoked to acquire this Green Cobb.
Believe it or not, I've collected T206 for almost 30 years, and this is my first Green Cobb. Obviously I could've acquired one along the way, but never found the right one, until now. |

Mine pale in comparison to most of the others on this thread but my two favorites from 2018 were these:
Attachment 339245 Attachment 339246 Both are cards I've wanted for a long while. I got the Bender for my Bender collection and the Musial, well, I've always thought it was a beautiful a card as has been produced. Here's hoping that Net54 folks have a prosperous and healthy 2019. And you all find that one card that's been on your list the longest. |
Congrats on completing the set, Jon! Nothing like saving one of the toughest cards for last. :)
Solid HOFers there, Bob, and I agree that the '53 Musial has one of the best photos on a baseball card. |
