A brief retrospective on the LEAF GUM Co. (1948 - 1949)
 

Here are some recollections regarding the LEAF GUM cards from my youth.

Early in 1948, the first cards marketed by LEAF were Pirates of the Seas cards with a 1" x 2" stick of Bubble gum in 1-cent wax-packs.
These cards are very tough to find; and, very seldom seen.



In 1948, LEAF issued their ALL-STAR FOOTBALL GUM set comprising of 98 cards, issued in two 49-card series. Jackie Jensen's rookie
card is in the tougher Hi # series. A tremendous FB and BB athlete, Jackie decided in favor of BB when he signed with the Oakland Oaks
of the PCL in 1949.

In the Fall of 1948, LEAF introduced their KNOCK-OUT BUBBLE GUM set (49 cards + Rocky Graziano). These cards were very popular.
And, due to high demand, LEAF ran additional press runs of them in early 1949 (gray cardboard versions).

1948 was the 3rd meeting of the famous Rocky Graziano vs Tony Zale fights of that era. Zale knocked out Graziano in this 3rd match-up,
winning 2 of the 3 fights. The Graziano card is extremely rare. Supposedly, Rocky did not like his picture and had LEAF remove his card.

LEAF issued the 1st series (49 cards) of their ALL-STAR BASEBALL GUM in early Spring of 1949. And, issued the 2nd series (49 cards)
in limited distribution during the Summer of 1949.

1949 LEAF BB cards with wrong-backs
 

Complementary pair of wrong backs from my 1949 LEAF set.

These inverted backs on the cards in 2nd (scarce) series tells us that the printer simply ran the pre-printed 49-card sheets (of fronts)
in reverse when doing the back run.

I've never seen 1st series wrong-backs from this set. Anyhow, if you have 1949 LEAF wrong-backs, please post them here.....Thanks.

I am a huge fan of '49 Leaf and would love to show off more but unfortunately this is the only (1) that we have at the moment.

We can only afford so many MONSTERS at a time.

In a similar vein I always wonder why the Ruth from this set sells for such high prices. I mean it is a post-career card printed after his death just like the 62 Topps or any other postwar Ruth card. Why does it garner prices as if it was issued during his career? It's an attractive card to me but I don't understand why it is so IMHO overpriced.

The Leaf Paige is definitely one of the great card's to own in this hobby, good luck buddy...hope you can track down a nice PSA 1 or Authentic Paige for your collection. If I come across one, I will definitely point you in the right direction!

It's all a matter of "relativity"....you consider this vintage card of Ruth "overpriced"....however, when compared with his Goudey cards (or earlier cards),
it is reasonably priced. Ruth is Ruth, and most collectors want an old card of him.

I think it is a MUCH better looking card than any in the Goudey sets but what I meant by ovepriced was overpriced compared to other cards that saw release after his death. If the Leaf had been issued in 1933 it would be without a doubt his finest looking playing days card.

I am reprising this thread as it illustrates a rich amount of LEAF cards on display.
Especially all the 2nd Series (short-prints)....which are very seldom seen.
And, many of my color variations.

Plus, Mike Ryan's (long-time 1949 LEAF BB collector) beautiful cards.

After all is said and done.....pictures are always worth a "1000 words" :)

What a wonderful thread -- a trip down Net54 memory lane!

Even more impressed with the cards in this thread with the passage of time.

My own Leaf run from earlier in the thread has rounded out a bit now. Many thanks to the board members who helped along the way.
The Jackie and Ruth were actually two of my very first cards bought via Net54, and I am still very grateful to the sellers! Great memories.

These are amazing copies across the board. Centering color registration - awesome!

Not a set I collect, but a cool thread. I have a handful of Leaf cards, including these two misfits. Can anyone offer a good explanation with what is going on with them? Harris has a really dark area below his mouth that looks like a beard (not ink on card), and the Evans has registration issues that caused the weird border overlap on the left side?
