A.J., great going. You finished the 1914 CJ set? Even the Mathewson? That really is something.

Ruth RC

Lol Pete!! Just had my third son this past Wednesday. So, my plan was for each of them to have a Ruth RC. With the prices escalating recently, I wasn't sure I'd be able to pull one off. Thankfully, the timing worked out well.

It was a big night for me; I won three cards: Lot 77 (Old Judge - Burdock), Lot 243 (Close Candy - Speaker), and Lot 257 (Briggs - McConnell). I was the under-bidder on the Kid Nichols Mayo Cut Plug card.

Griffins 05-01-2016 05:52 PM

I picked up another Kbat, this one of Al Maul. Really love that set.

I told this story to my current girlfriend. We met in 2005. She always says that if she had been there, she would have helped me, and we couldhave gotten a Wagner.

Except for this: I found out that the winner of that card was Keith Olberrman. I could have made multiple bids, and he still would have beat me. So maybe you would have gotten them with one more bid, and maybe not. Could be someone wanted them much more that you did. Lets hope that you get another chance soon. :)

I appreciate the pep talk. I have been bummed all day. I know that the Gehrig wasn't great, but it did feel like 6 grand after BP was a reasonable price - especially with the provenance - would you agree? Knowing my personality, I would have ended up 10 grand into it committed to winning, late for the race, and irritating everyone else as the reason that the auction had not yet closed. I have been reading all of the Carter letters here on the board. I watched the Mastro video and I love the picture of the newspaper article where he is showing off the Delongs around 1950. Something about that set really spoke to me. Maybe someday it will show up again. I will be more on the ball when that happens...

Reeled in a MINO and also snagged the J Wood Studio Esterbrook. Almost, but backed away from all the T214's and T215's...I thought the Orange Borders box and the Cameo Pepsins were good deals, but did not have those on my bidder card...Rob

I was an under bidder on the Esterbrook.

Kenny Cole 05-01-2016 06:36 PM

I won the 1914 CJ WaJo PSA 2 for more than I wanted to spend; the Oxford Confectionary WaJo PSA 2 at a decent price; the PSA 3 N172 Sam Thompson Philadelphia card; and the 1952 Xalapa Mexican League team photo with Dihigo and Buck Leonard from Dihigo's collection. I really wanted the Rube Foster photo but just couldn't seem to pull the trigger again.

Nice one, that is sharp for a Mino. I considered Collins as I don't yet have a Mino and that is a HOFer in excellent condition, but I decided to wait to fight another day - I am glad I didn't bid you up!

Steven, I thought it was a good price. I think the condition kept the price lower, which was good for me.
Bryan, yeah I thought it was in nice shape for a T216. I also had some bids in on the T216 Lajoie. Did you win anything at REA or just waiting for Heritage?

Boy, 6 years ago a partial set went off the board at $14K! That is quite the price drop.

Was the 2009 set superior to the current offering?

I still have a perfect record with REA..........0-fer :(

I was hoping to get the N172 Mickey Welch, but ended up not being able to go for it.

I am really excited about winning the T215-2 Walter Johnson -- having obtained the P42 earlier this year, I have now completed what I perceive to be the closest I'll get to a back run on the hands-at-chest pose!

(I have never spoken to anyone who has seen or heard of the T215-1, so I'm not sure it exists, despite its inclusion on the checklists.)

I've updated my graphic in celebration.

Cheers,
Steve

I am having some remorse. I thought long and hard about the 33 Delong Lionel Carter set. I know that I can get a 33 Delong set in the future, but I doubt I will ever be able to get that set! It went for 5 grand + 1 grand BP. I stopped at 4 grand. It was at $4,750 last night and had been there for a while. It went up only $250. I woke up early this morning for the 1/2 Marathon and the auction hadn't closed yet. I am getting ready to buy a motorcycle this month, so my wife and I agreed that it was an either/or proposition. At breakfast, I thought that I am pretty deep into my 54, 55, and 56 sets with each probably pushing 5-6k with the number of grade 6 & 7 superstars and HOFers. I don't want to sell them, but I knew that I could get them again - but I would not be able to get Carter's Delongs. So, I had a quick conversation with the Mrs about using consignment credit for the sake of making one final push (I would pay up front, but the understanding was that I would consign in the fall and reimburse the account). I would then make whatever set I sold be my next project and start again.

I got the head nod, was getting ready to make one final push as I had gotten final warning. I popped open the computer and it had just closed. Maybe 5250 or 5500 doesn't get it, but I am going to wish I pulled the trigger...

I know the feeling. Back in 2003, I was the underbidder on a T206 Plank on ebay. I bid $16,100, and it went for $16,200. I know I probably wouldn't've won it at $16,300, but it still hurts, as I'll undoubtedly never again have the chance at a Plank.

Fantastic pickups, everyone!

This is my first REA win, and these two cards once resided in Jim Blumenthal's amazing collection.

I was able to win the Orange Border T210 set. I only needed two for completion and after I mix and match with my current OB's I will be able to put a nice grade set together. Ill post a thread once I have them in hand. I really wanted the pair of E222's but couldnt pull the trigger. If either owner ever looks to move them please keep me in mind. Great pickups everyone.

I know there is a theory that those M101-2s were "cheap" last summer because they sold in a small regional auction without much fanfare, but everything sold in REA for about what they sold for last year. Anyone who was in on them last year was in on them this weekend.

But, I love them, and will keep collecting the heck out of 'em...!

clydepepper 05-02-2016 07:53 AM

Could anyone tell me how to 'cut and copy' the cards I won? - from the REA website, I mean.

Thanks

I think there may be a better way, but I take a screen shot of the image and then crop it in Paint.

Right click on the small image and open in a new tab. It will be a much larger image that you can save to a file sharing site and then link it to your net54 post.

ullmandds 05-02-2016 08:07 AM

I just drag the image to my desktop and then link it in my thread post .

Peter_Spaeth 05-02-2016 08:09 AM

Drag the small image to the edge of the screen. That then brings up a link where the image can be copied by the usual method.

You always got Heritage up next,
and don't forget to look at the HugginsScott preview--I just scrolled thru tons of vintage cards and including some hard backs (brown lenox and Am.beauty460) There tons of sets in this one.
I got my eyes on 3 lots already there.
