Recently picked up the greenish tint version of the Snookums card on the left to match the yellow one on the right that I already had.

You may not get the recognition over here as you should but that is an awesome pickup! The Ruth image on the super rare R87 trio is great! You just need the other 3 cards to make the set of 6 to see who the other ballplayers are, MUCH easier said than done!

Howe’s Hunter 04-14-2016 11:28 AM

Numbers 289, 290 and 291 are back with the others

and a great surprise with number 289.

John Taylor at TnT Collectibles near Pittsburgh has been the source of quite a few cards over the years. A couple of weeks ago, we had a miscommunication over a card, and after a series of emails, he just went through his current inventory and found all the cards he had that Howe had stamped, made an offer and sold in a group rather than go through the auction process on eBay.

When the package arrived today, there was a great surprise with the Jordan card, as it has Howe's "other" stamp, using his first name Urich, and listing him as an agent for the Saturday Evening Post, but still with the home/grocery address listed. Like the other two I've seen and been able to acquire, the stamp is in green, which doesn't seem to hold up as well over time (the others are quite faint also) but really is a wonderful surprise to have arrive.

John had told me the Myers stamp was really strong, and he wasn't kidding on that, either.

Luke,

Congrat's, I was determined to get that one, but I was at work when it closed, and couldn't bid. Fate was conspiring with you on that one! Glad to see it went to such a good guy. :)

Andy, love the Hornsby, especially.

Pete, beautiful A&G.

Thanks Bill.

I got the Hornsby today. It is my highest graded DS HOFer at 4.5. I decided to go a little nicer than the rest (I know the group photo isn't great ... my budget being what it is the others are almost all 2, 2.5, or 3).

It serves double duty as necessary for the DS collection and also as my only Hornsby; someone I definitely want in my collection in contrast to, say, Red Ruffing (whose example in the Quigley collection features the card number written in pencil on the front top right corner). Still, when I display them all together they look better than I hoped.

I won the Hornsby by 66 cents. My snipe v. another snipe. Mine was in about 20 seconds earlier than his. If it were reversed I guess he would have gotten the card because while my bid was higher by $0.66, it wouldn't have been large enough to satisfy the minimum bid increment. I think that's right ... someone please feel free to correct me.

Thanks.

That's a really nice Lajoie, David. Congrats on winning it.

PWCC has been selling some incredible examples of his T206s recently. I was watching a couple of the portraits he sold. This one blew me away. That's a PSA 6 w/ a dark green Sovereign back. Then there was this PSA 4. That one looks under-graded to me.

I can't wait to own some of these.

It would seem mainstream Ruth's +1, for a D304 Cobb is interesting in trade but we know Gary (hey Gary) is shrewd. And that is no ordinary D304, it's really a cut above. Congrats on that one, Gary. Great looking card.

glchen 04-19-2016 09:19 AM

Thanks for the comments, everyone! I think it was a very fair and equal trade for both of us. I definitely gave up a lot of tough Ruth cards that now I have to go out and find again and hope the prices will still be reasonable. However, the Brunners has always been on my want list, and I probably could not have picked up a nice copy without a trade like this.

John Lloyd graded Authentic 94,875 (Hakes)
Pete Hill graded Authentic 64,936 (Hakes)
Ty Cobb graded Authentic I think 13k (Ebay) a steal BTW
Luis Padron graded Authentic 11,243 (Hakes)

And then my poor mans punch card which was under 10k.

Thank you Joe as that type card has always eluded me over the decades and finding one without the little hole in it, made it a must own. Wish I had one with the punch ad back which is ten times tougher!
