The Saints Poster :

...I've been working on ( actually "picking away at") the other poster from this collection of two , the one with the 19 Millers but here's a view of the Saints poster---the lower right hole is where Larry Rosenthal (batting ) goes back into when he's all cleaned up.......these are positioned onto the back of the large posterboard so that the white borders are not visible but they're all complete ; old brittle kid's construction paper tape is holding them in place... I'll send a list of names in the order of the cards' positions this weekend sometime... ... |
Hi Mike,
Have you ever seen the Worch George Gibson? |
Some inquiries
Hi all,
In response to PMs from folks about specific players- Andrews and Gibson I have not confirmed in Worch, but there are a lot of MLB players, mostly commons, hiding in the bushes. Like some other issues, because you could request the players you wanted, stars and HOFers are seen a lot more than commons. Tim |

Just checking but does anyone have a picture of Roy Spencer's Worch? Always been curious if he's listed Cleveland or not
|
No Spencer
Hi Jack,
I don't have a image of Spencer; Mike G. may have one, since he seems to have at least as many Worches as I do- Tim |

"Gene Trow" and "Bill McWilliams"...in the slow process of cleaning off eighty years of grime ; they were exposed to the atmosphere but fortunately not to sunlight ; still crisp and a lot of gloss remaining...the attribution reads "Photo By Saint Paul Daily News" ; the "Saint" is completely spelled out ; on some others they used the abbreviation "St."..... ...my druggist wants to know why I buy so much alcohol and solvents.... ... |
the Saints poster
Hi Mike,
So do I understand you correctly that these are full-size cards that look like they were collected separately and then fitted into the poster (as opposed to a poster from which individuals were cut)? Tim |
Yup
...they are very well-done home-made posters -- nineteen Millers and twenty Saints , both "1935"
..cards are intact.... ...possibly some new vars. and even new confirmations of your rumored names.. ..no Gibson or Crabtree or Spencer or Andrews though... .. |
I actually believe those posters were issued by Worch.
|
They were found in St. Paul, the same city where Worch operated.
|
Mike, do you agree that it seemed to have been a Worch issue? It makes sense to me. I know one person I spoke to sees it as more of a Saint Paul team issue of 1935. I would like to get all the names from the poster, which I still don't have. I can get about half, which I'm about to do-

I hope you'll post the Mpls poster when you have a chance-

Interesting find this weekend. I already posted the signed Larry Rosenthal card earlier in this thread. I found this second one on Saturday. I didn't realize there were two different Rosenthals in the set. A pretty nice surprise :)

The Simmons Brothers....

The 5(MK) is a new grab...too many differences to list without getting a migraine.....neither flip mentions a var so methinks we may have found yet another new one , Tim ......Tim ?? ..Any Worch visible at the National this year ? .. |
Simmons
Hi Mike,
Yes, I think you're right that the Simmons is a newly seen variation. Not many worches at the national, with a couple of exceptions I can tell you more about soon... Tim |

Thanks very much for this thread! Solved a mystery for me. This card has been kicking around our collection for quite some time and I couldn't figure out what on earth it was until now:

Some better shots of my card. Some scratches on the upper right side there but looks pretty darn good other than that:

Also, I just realized the card says "Boston AL" but he's clearly wearing a St. Louis Browns uniform.

Well, he's back from SGC. Looks great but must say I was surprised to see so much daylight between the gasket and the card:

At least I think so. All the other Martins I've seen have the blank background. Sometimes ebay still comes through...

Time for an update on the Worches
Hi all,
Still obsessed with the Worches over here. I continue to compile new variations to the checklist, which is ever-expanding. If you have acquired any recently that you think might be uncataloged, let me know- I am also trying to compile scans of all the cards. I need scans of all these MLB players. Please let me know if you can supply any, or even just confirm their existence. Earl Adams Ivy Andrews Herman Bell Estel Crabtree George Davis Leo Durocher George Gibson Burleigh Grimes Charlie Grimm Frank Grube Jesse Haines Ray Hayworth Harvey Hendrick Billy Herman Frank Hogan Hank Johnson Sam Leslie Ernie Lombardi Adolfo Luque Jim Mooney Joe Moore Bob O'Farrell Ernie Orsatti Eppa Rixey Blondy Ryan Roy Spencer Casey Stengel Riggs Stephenson Gabby Street Gus Suhr Danny Taylor Al Todd Bill Urbanski Johnny Vergez Bill Walker George Watkins |
Burleigh "Berley" Grimes
http://imagehost.vendio.com/a/204295...SWORCH_NEW.JPG
... Hi Tim The Worch Cigar Premium Grimes I'm cleaning to replace back into the 1935 St. Paul Saints poster has the first name spelled " Berley "----- Berley Grimes vs. "Burleigh Grimes"---what are the odds that it's two different players ??--hopes this muddies the waters for ya.... .. |
Grimeses
Hi "Mike,"
I know, I wondered whether the Burleigh Grimes might be a phantom thread from the Berley in the AA set - especially since no one has actually produced a Burleigh for inspection. But Burleigh was still pitching in 33, so we can't rule it out. PMs and emails sent your way needing replies :) |

Hi Ben,
Did you see my note of Friday? I would love to get a pic of your Minneapolis poster for the checklisting effort. I think you have only sent the St Paul one previously. Please email me at apspr@msn.com |

Here is a card that came in a lot of Burke postcards. It looks like a Worch to me. It wasn't shown in the lot on Ebay, so it was a bit of a surprise to receive it.
|
Nice, Jeff
That’s definitely a Worch!
Tim |
I have never seen a photo of this player to compare to but I am guessing this is "Berley" Grimes for the 1935 St Paul Saints...

1933 Worch Cigar Hughie Critz???
Anyone have one that they're willing to part with???
|
1933 worch cigar Buddy Myer
Hey gang!
I scored the Hugh Critz I was looking for... Many thanks! Now, I'm looking for a 1933 Worch Cigar Buddy Myer... Anybody have one? Looking for lower grade (i.e. less expensive), but will entertain anything... Thanks in advance! |
bumping this durable thread
so that anyone newly interested in the set who might not have seen can have the info more accessible

I was looking at some of the newly listed Worch cards on eBay. Was surprised with the prices. They look very nice but I sure wish they were a little cheaper.
