Very nice Hubbell photo, Mark. It could be a rookie year piece, the uniform dates it to 1928-30.

pickup
Mark,
I believe you are right about the multiple pics of his swing. I always wondered if there were more as yours shows the man sitting in the doughout is the same in both shots. Very nice. I did check the back of mine and all it says is Lou Gehrig 1935 and the acme stamp. No real info. |
Phil,
Thanks for uni info. I hadn't looked it up, but he looks pretty young. That's what i was going on. Carlton, Nice house they had. She was pretty hot! Al, PM with who you got that pic from. I ask because I was offered one of the two by a dealer last year. I don't remember which one, but perhaps you could contact him and get it if it's the other half. Best to all, Mark |
pickup
Hi Mark,

Wow Mark! That's a sweet Mullin with fantastic content! Great pick-up Buddy. |
Ha! I am an idiot!:D:D
I was just looking these pics over and realized it isn't Gehrig! It's Mel Ott watching Bartell score. I realized this as I looked at the socks. They match Bartell's and not Dickey's. Of course, i could've just read the tag on the back of the top picture. See, This is what happens when you drink and scan stuff late at night. So the message to all you young folks is don't drink and scan! A couple of other interesting points I noted are. On first glance they look the same, but they aren't. They were taken milliseconds from each other. Look at how Bartell's arms and legs are from very slightly different points of the same stride. I think the second photo comes first as the umpire's front foot is slightly higher in that pic. He is stepping forward so the second one should come first. Also, they are from different angles. The photographer of the second was to the right and lower than the top one. You can tell by the orientation of home plate as well as the view of the Dugout on the second pic. Sean, I guess I just never thought of getting Bartell. Dickey was at a show in Conn. in the mid 80's. That's when he signed them. Mark Quote:

Last group
This is the last few I scanned. I promise not to post more for a while. I don't want to hog the thread.
The first is the last from the Pride of the Ynakees group. The next is a Butterfinger. The third and fourth I need a little help on as I don't know what issues they are. PLMK if you recognize them. Thanks, Mark http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...GDayatpark.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...ayatparkbk.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...tterfinger.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2.../Lg-promo1.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2.../Lg-promo2.jpg |

Been kinda close to broke lately, but I did manage to pick up a few more guide pages featuring hard or seemingly impossible for me to find players for my collection.. Moonlight Graham in the 1907(1908) Scranton page, and Louis Sockalexis on the 1902(1903) Lowell page.

2 weeks after I picked up my 6ft baseball bat(page 1 of this thread) I found this small one. I love the homemade feel of it especially evident by looking at the knob. At the same antique mall I found this neat 1928 Hall's Baseball game with original instructions that appears to never have been played.

A couple of great pickups this week...

Two great pickups this week:
- Circa 1940's original cartoon artwork of Johnny Vander Meer by Cincinnati artist Russ that was a regular contributor to News of the Reds. This came to me from fellow net54 collector Laughlinfan. Thanks Marty, I love it! Dimensions are approximately 9" x 14". - Another tremendous pickup for my advanced Walter Johnson collection. A terrific 1929 steel tipped fountain pen 3 x 5 of HOF'er Walter Johnson. One of the nicest I have ever seen. Thanks Greg (Gnaz on net54)! |
Glad to see that artwork in your collection where it belongs, Scott! Enjoy!

Something new
OK so I picked up a nice little picture last week and finally got it today.
1923 World Series Game 5 10/14/23 By Paul Thompson. Showing Joe Dugan scoring on his inside the park HR in the botom of the second inning. Whitey Witt and Bullet Joe Bush scored in front of him. Babe Ruth is standing by pointing to the plate, as he was on deck behind Dugan in the lineup. Also pictured is Hank Gowdy catching for the NY Giants, Home Plate Umpire HOFer Billy Evans, and batboy Eddie Bennett. Pic is approx 7x9. http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/1...140NYA1923.htm http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...WSThompson.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...Thompsonbk.jpg |

Way to go Mark! |
Thanks Jimmy.
I thought it was a pretty cool pic as well. It's not in my usual collecting realm, but I made an exception. Don't worry, I'm not gonna start collecting Ruth. I haven't decide if I'm going to keep it long term, but I'm enjoying it for now. My newest addition was a gift from the wife. She saw me looking at in online and told me she wanted to buy it for me. 1935 Gehrig with his wife singing to him a song she co-wrote. It's a very warm piece. The type I really enjoy. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...ifesinging.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...esingingbk.jpg I've seen the sheet music but haven't gotten one for myself yet. Best, Mark |
One more nice one this month....

Scott,
That's a very nice one. He did some really nice work. I just realized I have one of his of Gehrig as well, from about the same time frame. Mark |

I am anxious to find out more about this..... It will be fun to see what I can discover.... I am pretty sure that it belonged to Lefty Grove. It could have been used on an equipment bag of Lefty's... Perhaps carried with the team when they played their away games. I don't know yet for sure...

============================================== A friend sent me an email a couple of weeks ago regarding a few really neat 1960's Beatles items that he recently discovered at his Father's home. My friend told his Dad that he had a friend that was a Beatles collector. His Father told him to make a deal. Several days later, these arrived. :D This large poster c. 1965 Beatles Live at Shea - Film for all who weren't lucky enough to see them live, they could catch the movie at select theaters. And just how cool is it that the 3 Stooges "short" was the opening act for The Fab Four! The second piece was this terrific Beatles Wallet still in it's original packaging! I just love stuff like that. :) Both of these pieces literally hadn't seen the light of day for over forty years! Attachment 54638Attachment 54639 And boy, was I surprised to find a bonus piece he included. This sweet c. 1975 Poster that was surely meant to grace the walls of your neighborhood Music Store. As you can see, it displays all of the albums the Boys produced as both from their years together and through their solo careers up to that point, which was 1975. Ya know, I really like my collection... A LOT! But it's the friendships that are forged, and the memories you have from them, that will stay with you long after your collection has been sold... :) Attachment 54640 |

New HOF signed ball of Bobby Doerr. Also, happens to be on a Senior League balls, so it also adds a new professional ball type to my collection as well. Came from Dennis C. Purdy with his COA. I don't know much about him other than his time at VCBC, but the ball looked ok to me(From my experience his B's are generally all over the board, and you typically don't see many down-turns on the D, but I decided to give it a go). Anyone see any issues? Or does it check out as OK?

Found a really nice 2 page handwritten Joe Paterno letter, Not something I usually would pick up but the price seemed right. Thought it had good content and is pre head coach days. Actually written at the time the Jerry Sandusky was on a DE on the PSU team. I really dont recall seeing a handwritten letter latley usually the later typed recruiting letters simply signed Joe. If anyone is interested let me know as I am not attached to it and will be looking to move it in the future.

Newspaper cover with photos of the celebration of Feller returning to Cleveland after his opening day no-hitter. It's not the greatest piece, nor necessarily the most historically significant. But I think it'll look pretty good framed.

Nice jersey Clint! How many does that make in your collection now?
I just picked up a previously unknown (to me) Nebraska Indians postcard...same design as another I have, but this one has the team name and statistics listed at the top...interestingly enough though the team in 1914 was actually known as "Beltzer's Nebraska Indians" as Guy green no longer owned the team...the Beltzer brothers are both pictured on this postcard. http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b3...1914nebind.jpg Also picked up a few cuts from old Spalding guides of the team....these cuts have really helped me identify some of the players on my other postcards and photos. http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b3...am/nebinds.jpg http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b3...eam/nebind.jpg |

I don't even know if this fits into the memorabilia category, but I picked this up recently. It's card related so it's a nice addition to my collection. Any guess on actual age?

Thanks Dan. Awesome pick-up on the NI postcard! I've got 11 different teams now. Overall between MLB, minor league and college I have around 50. I just picked up one of my grail items today. It's a 1954 Wichita Indians road jersey. I've been after one of these for over 10 years. The only other one I know of is in a museum and it doesn't have an original patch. I also landed two jerseys from alma mater that I'm pretty excited to get.
|
Sweet! You got it...I was wondering how that deal was coming along. :) Do you know who wore those Wichita State jerseys?
