Hey 71buc,

Your photo sure looks like mine taken on the same day. What do you think?
This is one of my favorites. Mets 1968 Spring Training stretch- Florida style!

How did you do it?

Did you win that one in a Henry Yee auction? If so I was one of the losing bidders and have been searching for another one for quite awhile. That's how I came across the one I posted. Nonetheless I still much prefer your image but I am also pleased to settle for the fruits of my search. Thanks for sharing yours I think it is one of the more amusing shots I have ever seen.

Picked this up at an estate sale this morning. Not single signed, but I've always wanted one personalized, so it will do for now.

Hi Mike,
Yes, you are correct. I do recall that my photo came from one of Henry's auctions. I believe that this photo will be featured in an upcoming book on Nolan Ryan. I like this image too!

That's a terrific N.D. ball you got there! The condition looks great. Would love to see a picture once it's inflated.

I've been looking for a catcher figural for a while. This is an early National Baseball Museum and Hall of Fame, Cooperstown, N.Y. souvenir ashtray circa 1939 by K&O Novelties Company. They produced detailed bookends and figurines from gray metal or bronze from 1895 to 1939. Baseball Museum opened to the public in 1938 or 39 and the ashtray would have been a very early piece sold or presented at that time. Although this isn't a particularly large piece, I appreciate the detail and uniqueness of it. I've never seen another.

Damn Mike. Between you and Mark/perezfan you guys got the figural market cornered! What a sweet looking piece.

Trivia question:
What's rarer than a Nolan Ryan game used pitcher bat with provenance?
A game used batting glove with great use and provenance!! I've only seen one that I recall in all the years I've been collecting Ryan.

I just picked up this game used Nolan Ryan batting glove from circa 1982-83. It matches perfectly with photos of him batting while a member of the Houston Astros that I have in my collection. This particular glove came directly from the collection of one of the other most advanced Ryan collectors, where it has resided for many years.

Ryan certainly wasn't much of a hitter in his career, but what I believe makes this batting glove special is where it came from, it's use, the fact that it's vintage signed. The best part of all is it was used on his right hand (throwing hand). It will be a great compliment to the Ryan game used Astros bat that he signed for me the night of the grand opening of The Ryan Center (Nolan Ryan museum in Alvin, TX) in April of 1999. :D

Un...believable Scott. Looks like you are the KING on companion pieces! Just an incredible pick-up my friend.

I just love that sign Mark. You really have a terrific eye! One of the best in the hobby.

Jimmy,
Thanks for the nice compliment (no pun intended).
Let's just say that I learned from the best. You're THE MAN when it comes to the campanion pieces. I'm just drafting in your wake, buddy.....

Very cool. I used to have a gold late '50s leather helmet with a dark navy stripe - Notre Dame was the last college to use leather helmets, and this was the exact 'pro' model they wore that year. Mine was almost certainly not a Notre Dame helmet, as I had no provenance that would indicate it was, but I sent pics to a major auction house and their authenticator was prepared to sell it as a genuine ND helmet  I thought, "these guys really don't know me"; however, I simply declined rather than call them out as I normally would.

Now I sincerely wish I had saved that helmet - it would have been beautiful in a case next to your football, and it cost me next to nothing.

Ditto. Jimmy...

I feel like it's almost too obvious and redundant to compliment your acquisitions, as they are always off the charts. But many thanks for the compliments!

What you said about Mike H and me was ironic... we often step aside for each other when a unique figural piece hits the market. I never even saw his Catcher Ashtray, but we often have to "collaborate" when a cool figural piece surfaces. I sometimes wonder if you and Mark (Lordstan) do the same with photos... Yankees in particular!

Lordstan 10-29-2011 08:35 PM

Mark(perezfan),
I am honored to be mentioned in the same realm with Jimmy.
BUT...when it comes to vintage Yankees photography, Jimmy is the "King" of this board and probably pretty close to overall. My wife keeps a tight noose(yes...Noose) on my monthly expenditures, so we collect in a different range.
I am fortunate to count him as friend and trusted advisor, which is only fair as I do have him to blame for my current interest in vintage photography. I was happy and blissfully ignorant collecting my signed 34 Goudeys, when Bam...He comes along with ridiculous photos of Gehrig and holy cow I'm hooked.

I think it is quite easy to get hooked on collecting new things because of this board. The amount, quality, and variety of the collections here are incredible and too numerous to mention each. Suffice it to say, that this is THE place to live out your collecting dreams vicariously through others. What makes it even worse, is that most here are so damn nice, it's hard not to get caught up in their collecting enthusiasm.

You figural and pennant collectors have fantastic stuff as well. I am fortunate that my basement isn't finished or I might have to get some of those as well to display.

Best,
Mark

Geez Mark, I wish I had that tight a noose on me. You pick up some pretty nice stuff every month :D

Really jazzed to end the month on a great note. Just picked up a game 7 ticket from the 1946 world series. This was the game that Enos Slaughter went from first to home on a single to win the series. This will look great matted with my photo of Slaughter sliding across home signed by both him and Marty Marion.

Beautiful ticket stub, Mike. Congrats! :D

mr2686 10-31-2011 05:37 AM

Thanks Scott! It was a really good weekend for tickets, at least as far as I collect. There was a 1954 game 1 ticket (Mays catch), a 1951 game 2 (Mantle blown knee), a 1955 game 1 (Robinson steal of home) and a 55 game 7 (Brooklyn's only title). All 4 of those came up first and went for more than I thought they were worth so I passed on them, and then the 1946 came up and I got it for what I felt was a great price. I guess that just shows the N.Y. bias even on old tickets :D

I concur with Scott. That ticket is a beauty, Mike! And from an historic game to boot! Really nice pick up.
