This seems like a memorable enough moment in the hobby. It may be setting it self up for future hobby lore. If he lives up to his expectations... You never know.

t206hound 06-24-2010 12:02 PM

This one is 1/250, not 1/2

Looking at the card, it is 1 of 250... only two have been graded by PSA

I wonder when he'll end up in a Yankees uniform. I wonder what the guy who sold it the first time is thinking.

D. Bergin 06-24-2010 12:52 PM

Anybody remember this stat line from a 20 year-old phenom in 1985?

Let's not forget he also came in 2nd place in Cy Young voting the year before as a 19 year-old Rookie. Imagine what his card would be worth if he came up today. ;)

Oh, not to mention he also played in the biggest market in the country.

GrayGhost 06-24-2010 12:53 PM

Sort of related to this topic and the Blue autographed card. Its PSA 9, one of two. Let me ask this, Why does that make it ANY better than someone who may have one of these who didn't send it to grade?

In general, lets say you have 500 Ty cobb T 206 cards. and 100 have been graded. Someone says "one of only two graded seven" none higher. Does that make the 400 "Raw ones" not worth money (assuming they are all original/unaltered).

I guess Im saying that a card being "1 of xxx" graded at that level, shouldnt mean it is the those are the only ones in that physical grade around, as some may not want to grade cards and be holding Raw ones in at least that shape. Puts a super high premium on grading, I guess..

hunterdutchess 06-24-2010 02:28 PM

Looks like the superfractor 1/1 first time buyer for $16,400 got himself a nice little profit:

FUBAR 06-24-2010 04:31 PM

Just passed 210k with 4 days left.... will we see 300k???

just saying that makes my ears bleed!

teetwoohsix 06-24-2010 05:16 PM

Do you all think the seller will really get paid at this point? This just seems strange to me.

Clayton

FUBAR 06-24-2010 05:38 PM

well the high bidder has 1400+ feedback.... will he pay.. who knows... he isnt a rookie with that feedback

card just past 260k.... i watched it climb 100k in 45 minutes.. crazy crazy crazy...

Matthew H 06-24-2010 05:43 PM

It's funny how earlier in this thread people were discussing what they would do with the 18k the card was selling for.

If this seller was having any trouble financially then that's over now.

Now at this point, i hope it goes for like 100 million..........because whatever company buys it....will never recoup it....probably a Las Vegas Casino or something

Kotton King 06-24-2010 05:57 PM

One could now buy a low grade T206 Wagner at the current price of $250,000.

Kotton King 06-24-2010 05:58 PM

Correction......make that $252,100. And the current high bidder has bid at least 30 times on the card today.

barrysloate 06-24-2010 05:59 PM

Does anybody really understand what is going on here?

Barry, this auction has more swinging D1cks, than a Chippendales event......its unreal

teetwoohsix 06-24-2010 06:07 PM

Barry, I admit this makes little sense to me. Leon did a great job of explaining this earlier in the thread, but this price,to me, is beyond reality.

And just for the record,I don't care how anyone spends their money. If someone wants to spend $350,000.00 on this card, go for it. To me, I couldn't bring myself to spend that kind of $$ on any card of a player with hardly any history in the game. And look how many "1 of 1's" keep popping up. One of one Blue, one of one red, one of one black, one of one sig orange blah blah blah...............

Clayton

cozmokramer 06-24-2010 06:07 PM

it says paypal is the only method of payment... that will be interesting.

barrysloate 06-24-2010 06:13 PM

I think this has gone beyond bidding on a baseball card. I can't believe that anyone, even the high bidders, believe this is worth a quarter of a million dollars, and I still think it has a long way to go. Maybe a million dollars at this rate.

So I think bidders are buying something else. Maybe being able to say you bought the most "valuable" modern baseball card is worth something to somebody, I'm really not sure. But these bidders are perceiving this card in some unique way.

Smokey Joe 06-24-2010 06:14 PM

Obviously the current/high bidder will not be paying for it at a quarter mill....i bet the seller is sooooo pissed since he knows there is no way he should expect payment.

barrysloate 06-24-2010 06:17 PM

It's already at 261K, and the high bidder has bid on it about fifty times. And there are four days left. Again, what is going on? Nothing makes any sense.

slidekellyslide 06-24-2010 06:19 PM

This guy should have done the same as the first guy that sold his 1/1 Strasburg and worked with ebay to pre-approve all bidders to make sure he was weeding out the idiots.

teetwoohsix 06-24-2010 06:22 PM

A VG Wagner T206, or this Strasburg........hhhmmmnnn........

They will pay... i think companies are starting to bid now

GoldenAge50s 06-24-2010 06:27 PM

It's all been just fun & games since it got near $100K---it's way outta' hand now. One guy has bid over 50 times and others are just playing along.

Seller should cancel everything back to about 50K & take his chances, otherwise it's a total farce.

PS: The 1914 FB guy has bid 48 times, not 50 as I stated above

FUBAR 06-24-2010 06:39 PM

it could be the Golden Palace casino... they like to waste money on ebay!

hunterdutchess 06-24-2010 06:42 PM

Is 1Mill range possible? I can just see Olberman, Dicaprio, and Gates all on there computers doing one big pissing match for this card : )

barrysloate 06-24-2010 06:49 PM

It's now 310K...I say it goes for a million.

Yeah I made the Gooden point in another thread, it really goes to show how a few games or even a few years doth not a career make.

A Mill could be possible with as much activity as this card has had in the last 8 hours. Absolutely crazy!

ctownboy 06-24-2010 06:54 PM

Knowing how Scott Boras likes to HYPE things to the extreme, I wouldn't put it past him to have somebody bidding on this card. That way, he can say that he represents the best rookie pitcher in MLB who has the HIGHEST priced modern baseball card in the world.

this card is currently at $22k, and in the questions section the seller said it was graded a 9.5 by BGS. I find it hard to believe that the centering (one of the four subgrades) could've gotten anything higher than a 7. I think to get a 9.5 the lowest any one grade could be is 8.5, correct? Just looks OC to the right, unless thats how its spoze to look?

But hey, I guess $22k is peanuts compared to the other 1/1 thats going for over a quarter mil

Rob

FUBAR 06-24-2010 07:02 PM

i wont mentioned it just passed 600k, but people are screwing with it now.....

Abravefan11 06-24-2010 07:03 PM

Now over $500k.

Peter_Spaeth 06-24-2010 07:04 PM

810k

barrysloate 06-24-2010 07:05 PM

Now 800K.

Abravefan11 06-24-2010 07:05 PM

Just went up $250k in 2 mins. Crazy!

asoriano 06-24-2010 07:05 PM

Make it $900,000.

What a mess!

barrysloate 06-24-2010 07:07 PM

The 900K is a new bidder.

Kotton King 06-24-2010 07:07 PM

Looks like Barry's prediction of $1,000,000 will happen in the next few minutes.

Peter_Spaeth 06-24-2010 07:08 PM

920

Kotton King 06-24-2010 07:08 PM

I've never seen anything like this.

FUBAR 06-24-2010 07:09 PM

this is better then REA.... 6 different people are bidding.. i dont get it, there are 4 days left not 4 minutes

Peter_Spaeth 06-24-2010 07:13 PM

15 retractions so far.

asoriano 06-24-2010 07:13 PM

I like how fifteen people "accidentally entered the wrong amount".

Kotton King 06-24-2010 07:14 PM

Could it surpass the T206 Gretzky/McNall Wagner ($2.8 Million) as the most ever paid for a card?

I still don't think the winning bidder will pay for this card.

FUBAR 06-24-2010 07:15 PM

11 bids just got canceled ... back to 920K and stable.... this guy must be wetting himself! I know id be dancing around the house if it was me....

George, Weesie and myself would be movin' on up!

barrysloate 06-24-2010 07:15 PM

I expected the million dollars to be a last minute snipe. This is happening so fast that I am starting to think there is something fishy going on.

Anyone suspect that before the night is out this is shut down?

cozmokramer 06-24-2010 07:15 PM

I can't believe that this auction has not been shut down yet.... I thought ebay would based on the previous shill bidding patterns throughout.

barrysloate 06-24-2010 07:16 PM

Eric- I was just thinking the same thing. If all these bids are on the level, then this is going to surpass the Wagner and become the most expensive baseball card.

Which completely blows my mind that anyone would pay (which again I don't think it will be paid for when it ends) that much for a rookie card from this year of someone that's only played 4 games so far.
