PSA 8 Ty Cobb D304

I'm assuming that the PSA 8 Ty Cobb D304 that sold in Saturday's REA auction for $80,000 before the BP, was the same card that Goodwin sold about a year or so ago for $260,000.

Is this correct?

Tony,

Yikes! According to VCP it's one in the same. How do you write-off $160,000???

Lovely Day...

Correction.... the one in Goodwin sold for $272,980.00 with BP.... Double Yikes!!!

I picked up this Cracker Jack lot along with some T205s. I thought the price of the lot was too good to resist... and I'm really hoping that PSA didn't miss a trim job on a few of these.

Jeff, is that you????

calvindog 05-03-2010 06:01 PM

Don't worry, Jim, there are actually other people in the hobby that are concerned about some of the funny stuff that goes on in auctions. But I promise not to make any more trouble because I don't want to make you sad, ok?

Edited to add: And it actually sold for 273K. Sorry!

Lot #297

Did a board member end up getting lot number 297?

i was willing to go up to 15K.. and that was already more then I could afford... but 20K after the premium was too rich for my blood..

if the winner is a board member I would be interested in several pieces.

This card sort of jumped out at me when I first browsed the auction online, but I figured that it would sell for more than I wanted to pay. When I woke up on the couch at 3:30 a.m. Sunday and saw what it was at, I decided to enter one bid and one bid only. Luckily it was the high bid, and just as fortunately, Jeff P. decided not to pull the trigger again. Even though it's not a Lajoe, I'm pretty thrilled to add a card to my collection that I never thought I would.

Rob,

That is a great card. Congrats

blome speaker

Tbob, I won the Speaker Blomes back you mentioned, along with the Wagner Blomes back, the 4 Clement bros. major leaguers, lot 173 mixed pre-war, and lot 326 t205s with 3 Mattys and 22 caramel cards. Underbidder on a few including the e97 set. Now have to hijack liquor truck to pay for this.

Bicem 05-03-2010 09:11 PM

Great Joss, had I known it was you I would have bid.

So you were the fellow that outbid me by $100 on the T207 Johnson, nice card and congrats!

My wife would be looking for that $3,000 spa day... Heck, I could send her to the real Spa (in Belgium) for less than most of the lots y'all have shown here.

Jerry, congrats! Glad to see Speaker and Wagner going to a good home. I was really amazed at the final hammer prices. Nice pickups on the other cards also. You are back in to the card world bigtime! :D

1960 Kahns Weiners

I was fighting pretty hard for the 1960 Kahn's lot of 53 with 3 Clemente's, but just less than hard enough. Anyone here win or happen to know who won it - really interested in the SGC 88 Clemente. If any of you out there happen to have rare or unusual Clemente items that you might consider selling (if for no other reason than helping to pay for all your REA winnings) please contact me. Congrats to all the winners.

-Howard

Ps. I know this is primarily a pre war thread, but it also seems that it is the most active REA thread.

Lifson rocks! Auction ended Sun morning and my card arrived this morning. Just another one of the many reasons why I like REA. Hell my Heritage winnings still haven't arrived.

ephus 05-05-2010 07:49 PM

My only win from this auction. I have owned the batting version from this set before, this is my first throwing version Wagner.

Beauty! For some reason, though I've seen this card many times (but not in person), your version made me notice the extraordinary colors in the sunset in the background. That's a looker!

Would you like these removed from the paper and glue stains, thanks

Peter_Spaeth 05-06-2010 11:02 AM

Dick are you still taking out paper wrinkles, I mean creases, I mean paper wrinkles?

calvindog 05-06-2010 11:31 AM

Pulls. And pinches too.

Guess it won't be for long. How great is this hobby?

Besides how often do you go to barber and simply ask for a shampoo?

The sheet will not be altered, harmed, cut, repaired or denigrated in any way.

In post 123, Dick Towle attempted to quote me. He left out the [/QUOTE] resulting in my quote from post 88 running together with his post.

Quick Service

I paid on Monday and received my winnings today in Texas.

FedEx pulled up around 7:30 this evening. Feels like Christmas all over again.
The Connor OJ cabinet is unreal and even the wife is swooning for Vinegar Bend.

Any consigners received their checks yet or is there a significant delay to be expected? I would think buyers have to pay before consigners get checks...

glchen 05-08-2010 03:48 AM

How do people pay and receive their winnings so fast? I mailed my personal check on Thursday (had to transfer money from my brokerage account first), and since I'm from California, the check probably won't arrive until late next week. Then it'll probably need 1-2 weeks to clear before REA can ship. Are most people paying by money order or cashier's check and sending payment via Priority Mail or something similar?

REA is known for, in many cases, shipping items before receiving payment.

Bicem 05-08-2010 07:36 AM

The artwork on the Mizell is amazing, good eye David!

kcohen 05-08-2010 09:14 AM

I mailed my check Monday and received my stuff yesterday (Friday). REA obviously doesn't wait for the check to clear before sending. Nice way to do business if you ask me.

e107collector 05-08-2010 11:27 AM

REA - quick shipping

I dropped my check in the mail Sunday evening. My items were mailed Wed, my check cleared Friday.

It used to take Mastro around 3-4 weeks to ship my items, but Legendary is now a lot faster the last time a won an item.

Tony

wolterse 05-08-2010 01:51 PM

Yes, dropped my check in the mail on Monday afternoon, REA winnings arrived on Friday.

Bill Goodwin and B&L turn items around at a quick pace as well.

Legendary usually takes 3-4 weeks.

Correct me if I am wrong but Silk Road Equity (aka: Mastro) would send winning lots before payment only to the "Great Guys" in the hobby. If you weren't part of that VIP club, you got nothing until the check cleared. That policy is what bit them in the arse.

Lovely Day...

You'll have to refresh my memory on who the "Great Guys" are in this hobby...The two people who I've heard of who didn't pay for their items, but still received them were not connected to auction companies.

calvindog 05-08-2010 07:35 PM

Mastro had plenty of money to pay consignors regardless of what they claim was the reason for their inability to pay. They just chose not to pay consignors; unless, of course, you had your dogs bark on the phone at them or called the press (or had an ol' friend call on your behalf). Then suddenly the money appeared.

I'm sure that's entirely true...however sending out items that are not yet paid for is IMO not a good business practice.

calvindog 05-08-2010 07:47 PM

I hear you. But Rob seems to do ok. There's just a different level of trust between Rob and the great majority of his customer base. Rob has said that he's been stiffed by like 1 winner in the past few years. Imagine what Legendary, Mastro, Goodwin would claim during the same time period.

Dan,

I guess my definition of who belongs as a "great guy" in the hobby is a little bit more broader then just auction owners. With that said, I have no first-hand knowledge of what is an old discussion and would prefer not to get "calvindog" all riled-up ;).

I was just trying to draw a distinction between what Mastro might have done to keep a couple of bidders in the fold and what REA does as a matter of customer service.

Lovely Day...

If you assume that all of the major auction houses draw from the same pool of bidders, it seems strange that REA is rarely plagued by non-paying customers, yet other auctioneers are forced to resell numerous lots in seemingly every auction they hold because of not receiving payments.

ichieh 05-09-2010 12:10 AM

What was the outcome of FBI investigation on Mastro auction. Any charges filed? I know Mastro went out of business, but the executives were able to get out the sinking boat and started Legendary auction.

If you look at REA's auction results posted on their website, they will show a letter discussing the origins of baseball purportedly written by Henry Chadwick selling for $310,500 (lot 469 in 2004 auction) and a trophy ball of an 1858 Fashion course All-Star game match selling for $498,800 (lot 1 in the 2005 auction). Neither of these items were paid for and they were subsequently sold along with other material at a private auction in February 2009. So apparently the problem of non-paying winning bidders applies to REA as well, and is more widespread than comments on their website would indicate.

Peter_Spaeth 05-09-2010 09:26 AM

If items are not paid for, should auction houses disclose that so that a misleading impression is not created as to prices? For better or worse many of us rely on reported sales as a guide to market value.
