T202 Wood/Speaker

Sean --

Nice pickup on that T202 of Wood/Speaker with the Close at Third middle panel. There are a few toughies in the T202 set for some reason or another, and that's one of them, at least in my experience. Everyone thinks the Birmingham card is tough because the ACC said so, but it's really not. The Cobb with the Desperate Slide for Third is, in my opinion, way harder than the other Cobbs, for instance. I'm not sure how they were printed, but it would be interesting to get in the time machine to check it out!

Take Care,
Geno

Thanks Geno!

It was a bit pricey but now I have both speaker/wood cards. Hey did you see the Hassan display that sold tonight? im assuming it was a reprint but was still pretty cool!

HercDriver 07-25-2009 07:28 AM

No - I didn't see it. Is it the big, tri-fold one? I had a reprint of it matted and framed for my man-cave! It wasn't big - it came out of one of the auction catalogs a couple years ago...

milkit1 07-25-2009 11:27 AM

check it out:

would love to have a full size reprint one.

1940's Eagle Hall of Fame Lefty Grove...

Here is another card for which I've been looking for several years... It was made in the 1940's... It is a 1940's Eagle Hall of Fame "card"... I say, "card", because it's on thick cardboard... It measures 9 1/4 by 11 1/4 inches... I had to scan the top and bottom separately and then fuse them together with software...

BTW.... Today is the 68th anniversary of Lefty's 300th (and final) win...

Vintage photo of Mickey Lalonge of Zeenut and Obak fame. It's actually a little bigger than 8 x 10 (the Vitt card is enlarged)> Both purchased at the same show.

Brad - congrats on your tough Grove pickups! Always a great feeling to cross something off you've been chasing for a long time.

Gorgeous Lalonge photo!!!

Just my opinion

Sean --

Not sure, since I've never seen that one before, but it doesn't look right to me. Both Matty and Cobb look different from the original ad piece. Way to suspect for me...

Here's the original (which I don't have):

Picked up a nice postcard size Burke photo of Gabby Street

I recently picked up a nice postcard size photo of Gabby Street. The picture is from 1938 when he managed the St. Louis Browns. The photo makes a nice companion piece with Street's T207. Unfortunately, I was the runner-up tonight on a large Burke photo of Street. You win some and you lose some.

Speaking of Gabby Street . . .

Won this postcard in the recent Goodwin auction
http://photos.imageevent.com/ltsgall...6%20Street.jpg

Rest of these cards are from eBay with exception of the 1959 Marukami Oh/Komatsu which I won in Robert Klevens' Prestige Auction. Something about that Overall card that said "Buy me"; always wanted the Bridwell Sliding card but lost out on several before I scored this one; not real pleased with the registration on the M116 but such is life.

The Malarkey is significant as it completes the common portion of the monster for me. It's all SLers, HOFers and variations from here on out. I was happy to pick up a Shag. A special thank you to David Bryan for allowing me to purchase the SLers before putting them on ebay.

Best,

Scott

Despite the E91 set's reputation for depicting generic images, look how both the T204 and the E91 Donlin look virtually identical.

Seeing this stuff and the memorabilia and other things is why I love this board so much. Thanks everyone.

I actually thought the same thing -- the E91 set has so many generic images that look nothing like the players, yet in this case Donlin looks pretty good. For a comparison to someone whose face (and hand) look nothing like him, here's Brown:

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/calvindog/3716705555/" title="1909 American Caramel E91-B by calvindog65, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2563/3716705555_d42e071923_o.jpg" width="900" height="759" alt="1909 American Caramel E91-B" /></a>

barrysloate 07-29-2009 10:05 AM

Jeff- some of the images are generic, others are pretty good likenesses of the player. It's a strange set in that respect.

brianp-beme 07-29-2009 11:05 AM

E91 likenesses

I've written an article about the E91 cards and came to the conclusion that most of the artwork of the E91A set and about half of the E91B appears to based (at least the facial portion) on photos that can be seen in other photo based issues of the era, including T204's. Jeff's post points out that this can be pretty obvious and strikingly similiar depiction, whereas the Brown, (if I remember correctly--don't have the article in front of me), is also an example of a card that utilized a photo of the player, but may have been less artistically sucessful in generating an accurate likeness.

Contacted Old Cardboard about my article...they were not too enthused--thought I would have to provide more images of the various photographic cards that were used to create them. I have the whole E91A set, and I did most of my research/comparision utilizing that great Classic Baseball Cards book issued in the mid 80's. In general E91's get no respect, but I believe they should be considered in a different light. Someday maybe I will just post the article here.

Brian

barrysloate 07-29-2009 11:24 AM

Brian- Old Cardboard really wasn't interested in it? That seems odd, as it sounds like a pretty good topic to me.

The N284 Buchners are likewise either generic or accurate. Identical poses are often used on different players, whereas some players can be identified without even looking at the name on the bottom.

brianp-beme 07-29-2009 01:41 PM

E91 article

In all fairness to Lyman, about a year ago we talked over the phone about the article and it was his opinion that the images of the comparision cards needed to accompany the article. I was able to provide scans of all the E91A cards, but only own maybe one or two of the comparision cards (the sets in the book I utilized were T204, Fan Craze, PC Rose, and M116's--all sets I don't really collect). I think he would be more interested in the article if I had those images scanned, but what the hey, I don't. Also Lyman read the article and perhaps was just letting me down easy (otherwise known as my writing and research was lacking, or sucked wind). Perhaps when I have the time I could post here, and people could do their own research.

Brian

barrysloate 07-29-2009 01:49 PM

Maybe it just needed a little editing.
