My pleasure, Jimmy! While we're talking cereal...a late 1930s Wheaties Baseball Broadcasts store poster and two complete 1937 single-serve cereal boxes (and the Huskies box still has the cereal inside!).

!964 Volpe advertisement

1 Attachment(s)
These banners were displayed in 1964 outside Union 76 gas stations in Los Angeles, promoting 8"x10" pictures of various Dodger players given away at the stations with a minumum puchase. It measures a whopping 3 1/2' x 7', and is made out of linen. Never seen another one survive, and being a picture of Sandy Koufax makes it even more unique.

"Junk mail" 80 years ago is pretty interesting. This tire salesman/owner was ahead of his time that is for sure. Cool find Jimmy.

Thanks Ryan. The Koufax banner had water damage on the edge and some mold issues, so I ended up paying more to a professional conservator to clean and stabilize it than i originally payed to acquire it. But since I mainly collect Koufax items it was well worth it.

Hi Rick,

I'm glad you posted that banner. I have one the same size for Cleveland Indians Volpe cups from the same era. When I get home later I'll try to snap a photo and post it. Nice to see that another one of these -- albeit not advertising the same giveaway -- survived.

Mr. Mitt (Jerry) has posted links above, showing the front and back of a Peach Glove, as well as a vintage ad copy. You will be hard pressed to find many additional images, as examples are scarce.

Although the names are off by a single letter, the Reach and Peach companies were not related. The guys over at Vintage Glove Forum can probably shed more light, if you are interested...

Here are a few photos of a really interesting JA Peach "snap heel" fielder's glove with its patent. The topic of Peach advertising and gloves were discussed earlier in the thread.

Recent REA pickup... I liked the colors, combined with the Carl Horner portraits, the D&M Logo and the cartoonish mascots at the bottom...

rob, yours looks to be in nice condition, great graphics. I don't believe they started with the Volpe cups in L.A. until 1965.

Nice to know at least 2 of these outdoor banners survived.

Nolan knows Rhino

1 Attachment(s)
Not vintage, but definitely oddball as this is the only one that I've ever seen. I've always liked this one. Nolan Ryan hawking Rhino brand huge farm equipment. As you can see, the bi-line is "Some things are just built tougher than others." BTW- Poster is circa 1990.

Lordstan 05-15-2010 07:07 AM

Paul,
Great stuff!
I noticed this especially because of the presence of Gehrig.
It's interesting that the tag line is "Joe McCarthy and a host of Memories" but there is no Dimaggio pictured. Ruth, Gehrig, Rizzuto, Keller, Crosetti, even one behind Gehrig that looks a little like Mantle, plus a few others that I can't immediately place are all there, but no Dimaggio. Strange!
Nonetheless, it's a beaut:D

Also if you ever get tired of it LMK.

Best,
Mark

I believe that McCarthy yankees piece was to be used as the print as the header on a calendar. I have had it like 15 years and found it in mint condition.

Dell,

I don't like being the bearer of bad news, and maybe you already know this, but I'm 99 percent sure that's a fantasy piece. Not really a reproduction in the true sense of the word, because there was never an original piece like that. It's a modern creation. Others can check in with their thoughts. I hope I'm wrong.

Best,

Rob

mjkm90 01-23-2011 06:53 PM

You are correct Rob. I didn't want to be the bearer of bad news, but I would want to know.

ExhibitMan, What version is yours? there's a little one about 5" I think, and the big one about 3 feet tall which I have in my collection. I saw one at the 2009 National that was a little wiped out that Gary Schultz had that you can see in link below
