Great pickups everyone. Mike, so sorry to see what happened to that phenomenal piece. My personal opinion is that condition is basically irrelevant for items like that, but still should have been handled appropriately. I do bubble wrap and cardboard for anything of value when it goes through the mail. It’s a shame.
Ben, great cards as well. Do you have the Exhibit in hand yet and have you had an opportunity to compare it with another? Probably just the picture but color seems a little off. As for the hole punched card, I love it. I’ve got to do that to mine so I can flip through them easier. |

Mantle Exhibit PC back
Ben:
Congrats on the Mantle PC back. As you know I am not into grading. But how is that only a 2?? Looks real good to me. But I guess I should not be surprised. When I recently got the four 61 Topps Dice Cards I picked up ( Mantle, Mays, Musial and Richardson) graded, I was expecting to be disappointed and figured I'd get a 3 or 4 on them because I thought they looked like a 5 or 6. Of course the Mantle came back 2.5. The one good thing is it was the highest graded, so in that respect it was good, but just like your Exhibit PC it sure looks much better than the assigned grade. Just my old man's grading rant! I know it is nothing new for you graded collectors. |

Fred,
For any of my Mantle stuff I slab for protection or I buy cheap examples already slabbed. I’m definitely not in it for grades. I think most of my Mantle base cards are 1’s or 2’s. I do have a bunch of 80’s 10’s in my pc, but most of those I acquired or slabbed for minimal $. To each there own though :) In the case of this PC back, I think it probably could have gotten a 3 or 2.5 but I am fine with the assigned number. It does have a noticeable crease that guarantees a low grade. It isn’t that noticeable in a scan. I am ready to find a raw dice game Mick like you did next! Haha |

Very cool pickup Mike! Congrats.
Now you need to collect variations with different numbers of matches used from the book. Haha |

At the same time, it’s so difficult to find these in any grade that you often get some compression in the market, with even low grades pieces selling for museum prices. Unlike with mainline pieces, where a pop 1 PSA 8, none higher might sell for 10x or 100x of a PSA 2, with the oddball stuff, it could go for 2x or it could go for 100x. Just need the right buyers to be motivated enough to pay that much for it. But I wouldn’t be surprised if you could easily get $10-20k on a bad day, and probably approach 6 figures on a really good day. |
I always thought that in order for this item to receive a numerical grade that it has to have the white borders on all sides. I've seen a few with no borders at all receive numerical grades. Just no consistency.

Supposedly a 1954 8"-by-10" photo. At some point in time, someone typed Mantle's name on the front. Attachment 588237 An 8"-by-10" photo that is stamped on the back; it is from NBC for Television Audience Promotion for the 1958 World Series. Attachment 588238 An 8-1/2"-by-11" magazine from Mexico, Super Hit. It's a special edition commemorating the homerun race of 1961. Maris is on the front cover with 61 "jonrones" and Mick is on the back with his 54 "bambinazos". Attachment 588239 |

Wow...great pickup Mike! Would love to see a pic with that guy up on your wall with the other spectacular framed pieces! I would almost be too scared to hang it thinking it might fall :)
|
Gonna be a bummer for your cleaning lady, though, as she'll be tasked with flipping that display over on your wall each week to change the orientation from Mantle being right side up to Maris being right side up and back again. :D

Mantle rare magnet base Hartland Statue
6 Attachment(s)
I am an advanced Hartland statues collector. Not many people know that early in the production of the statues there was a very rare subset of magnetic statues issued. Only 11 of 18 were issued with magnets attached to the bottom of the players feet.
Of course Mickey was one. I just picked up a duplicate which is only the fourth one I have ever seen in all my 60 years of collecting Hartland's. In the late 50's when these first came out car dashboards were metal. Hartland issued these to be used that way. But in case you didn't want them on your dashboard they also included a metal base with a hole drilled in it so you could mount the base with a screw to other surfaces. From time to time you may find statues with magnets on the bottom but without the base. The bases are actually rarer than the statues. Much like the Berra Hartland, you will see tons of them but seldom does it still have the original mask that was issued with Yogi. Too easy to lose over the years. The same with the magnet base. Hartland also issued a smaller statue known as the Minor Leaguer on a card. See attached where you can see the mention of mounting them on the dashboard of your car. Thought you all would enjoy seeing and knowing about this rare Mantle piece. I also picked up a Musial and Ruth with magnets and bases and a Fox without the base. Sorry photos are so large and turned sideways. Hopefully someone can fix it for this old man who is not computer literate! |

Magnetic base for Hartland
I had heard of these, but had never seen one. Thanks for posting. I have been fascinated with the Hartland issues ever since my parents purchased my first Hartland (Stan Musial) for me in the early '60's.

That's a beauty Mike. ^^^^^
These aren't necessarily new pickups (some are), but I gathered some cards the last year or so and finally sent them in to SGC. A number of these I picked up raw, here on the board. Excuse the lighting glare seen in a couple of these pics. The W.S. Batting Foes is very clean/no snow, unusual for that card. I picked up the '55 Bowman Mantle, in early 2020. It does have some wrinkles and gum stain on the back, plus the usual "chipping" thats everywhere on the '55s. I believe I paid around $150 for it, figuring it would be hit with the "authentic" designation, but I was surprised when it came back a 1.5. The '68 is obviously trimmed. It is such a brutal trim job, I can only imagine some kid took scissors to it. It adds to the charm, and I think I picked it up for like $50, so the price was right. https://i.imgur.com/f1xEXT3m.jpg https://i.imgur.com/rdo6q11l.jpg https://i.imgur.com/borKxNPl.jpg https://i.imgur.com/51SrSKfl.jpg https://i.imgur.com/KVJ76lBl.jpg https://i.imgur.com/kMHidkQl.jpg |

Dexter Press
5 Attachment(s)
Thought I would share another Mantle variation...albeit a minor one!
The item is listed by Kelly E. and graded by PSA as a c1960's Dexter Press Southwestern Historical Wax Museum Postcard. Kelly notes in an SCD article that it is designated as an 809-C, but there are also 99704-B designations. If you look at the Dexter Press dating by year, the 809-C is from 1965 and the 99704-B is from 1964. Small variation I know, but for Mike and Chris I am guessing you want both! lol The dating holds true for the Dexter Press items I have in my PC too. Curious about what others may have too. Notice the 66/67 Mick's have 22295-C which corresponds to 1967. The interesting one though is the postcard with Mantle wrapping his knee. This is not mine, but look at the number - 36419. That number is shown as being from 1951. I have only ever seen one of these and maybe it was just a test issue that wasn't released. Who would want a pc of an injured Mick! I do think it is cool though, and would make it one of a few "card" examples of a 1951 rookie Mick. |
The mantle postcard is from 1951

I'll need to find my wax postcard to see what version it is. Then, I'll have to put the other on my Want List. I'll need to look for the Yankee Dexter sets to confirm what number they have. I do have a picture of the Dexter Press Yankee poster on my computer and it has the following number on the back: DT-25546-C. That would correspond to 1967. I've never seen the Mantle postcard with him wrapping his leg. Very neat item that will also go on my Want List. |

There's also a 67 set on eBay and the Mantle in that set has the same number. |

1953 Topps Mantle Dvorak Painting Print
1 Attachment(s)
Several years ago, I acquired 1 of 50 prints of a painting by Gerry Dvorak depicting Mantle's 1953T card. It was authorized by the Mantle estate. Gerry had not created the original Mantle painting used in the set. He did paint 50 of the originals used to produce the set. There are several articles and interviews with Dvorak that appeared in hobby and newspaper articles. The print I own (No. 4 of 50) has original Mantle and Dvorak signatures. Below you will find the image and the handwritten Christmas card note from his friend, Kim. She also sent 10 of the hand-out 1953T prints used in Gerry's sports collecting and public appearances. I thought my hobby friends -- particularly Mantle and 1953T baseball card enthusiasts -- would enjoy seeing the image. -- Dan
