2 Attachment(s)
Larry Doby. Center Fielder for the Cleveland Indians in 1947-1955 and 1958 and the Chicago White Sox in 1956-1957 and 1959. In 1947, first black player to play for the Cleveland Indians. 1,515 hits and 253 home runs in 13 MLB seasons. 7-time All-Star. 1948 World Series champion. 2-time AL Home Run leader. 1954 AL RBI leader. 1998 MLB Hall of Fame. Cleveland Indians #4 retired. Cleveland Indians Hall of Fame. Managed Chicago White Sox in 1978. Second black player in MLB. First black player in the American League.
Frpm Doby's Sabr biography: Larry Doby is best remembered for becoming the first black player in the American League and the second in modern history in major-league baseball. When Doby made his major-league debut for the Cleveland Indians on July 5, 1947, he broke the league’s color barrier less than three months after Jackie Robinson first played for the Brooklyn Dodgers. In the face of racial prejudice, Doby remained a superior hitter and outfielder during his 13-season career, with selection to seven American League All-Star teams. “I had to take it,” Doby said, “but I fought back by hitting the ball as far as I could. That was my answer.” https://www.net54baseball.com/attach...1&d=1631445763 https://www.net54baseball.com/attach...1&d=1631445768 |

I don't know about anyone else but I had a hard time getting this card. It seemed to me they didn't come up very often but when they did they were scooped up rather quickly and always for a bit of a premium as well. |
