A new Mantle acquisition from the National
2 Attachment(s)
Hi Guys:
Picked this up in Chicago. It is a Post Cereal CANADIAN Supermarket display banner. It was intended to fold in half and hang over a wire above the cereal aisle in the Canadian Supermarkets to advertise the cards on the back of the 1962 Post cereal boxes. Sorry for the flash and shadows in the photo This joins my 62 Post AMERICAN display banner shown in the small photo next to the Canadian. |
Great piece Fred.

Man, over a month since this thread saw a bump. How about I bump it up with a Mantle I picked up today?
It's for my 1957 Topps and it's not in the greatest shape as it has a couple of creases (one on the left edge and the other near the top). It's going into my set, but I'll have to upgrade it later. Why buy it if I'm going to upgrade you ask? Because I got it for $100 at the local show today. Probably could've (should've actually) gotten it a little cheaper or at least seen if the seller had gone down a little more). But I'm okay with a $100 bill for a Mantle, especially a 57. https://i.imgur.com/E31zfnu.jpg |
Glad to see another post. I thought maybe collector interest in Mantle had died.
You won't ever regret paying $100 for this card. |

Thanks. I'm waiting until PSA catches up a bit to think about getting it graded. Or maybe I'll send it to SGC. I can't decide.

found this at a antique shop for 5.00 theres a soldering version from what I believe is 1958 and from what I researched mine in the scan is from 1959 |
Picked up a couple of cool posters.
1960’s Rawlings Gloves Ad Poster and 1968 Sports Illustrated Poster #8A1 (still sealed in plastic). How do you guys display your posters? Top loader? Frame? https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...dd827b2715.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...38ed1166c9.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...b47462d039.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...9bccd7de3d.jpg |

I try to have the large items framed so I can see them. However, that does eat up a lot of wall space. My wife has been nice enough to let me use the entry hallway to hang a bunch of stuff, including large posters. But I do have some other items that aren't framed yet because I'm not sure of where I'll put them. Hmmm, I can't seem to get the first two pictures to show up properly. But anyway, you get the gist. |
I forgot you had the full Jello ad. Very jealous as that looks twice as good as the 1/2 I have! The SI stuff looks terrific as well. One day I’ll have to put some baseball stuff on the wall.
|
Hey AustinMike, I truly love your framed JELL-O ad of Mickey; that is saturated with eye appeal!!!:D
I also congratulate you for the way you've framed the the 1954 Sports Ill. paper Yanks--nice. As an aside, I sure as anything wish Topps had used that breathtaking George Silk portrait of our Mickey, used by Sports Illustrated to make their paper Mantle, to craft their recent 2021 Topps X Mickey Mantle card. They chose the same original photo used on his '52 Bowman, which I hate because of Mick's serious, almost irritated expression on his face. The glorious George Silk portrait would have been perfect. Topps did everything else correct on the front---nice light blue background, great black 'n white extra photo, and the right period autograph. Topps screwed up the backside, however, giving the SAME backside they used on their 1955 Topps Mantle creation! Not to be vain, but they shouldda asked me, which would never happen anyway as I'm a nobody. But, I'm right this time! My suggestion is to rectify the situation---make a run of exactly 100 of the way the 1954 would look with the George Silk photo, and create a right proper 1954 backside. Have them all graded at least PSA 10 and identified as "UPDATE VERSION". I'll leave it to the Topps people how to market those modern gems. All right, I can dream can't I! All the best to you, AustinMike. You sure have a rousing hobby den, sir. Kudos, bro!!! --- Brian Powell |
Thanks Chris and Brian. I also really enjoy the Jell-O ad. However, a Net54er has said that real Jell-O ads have a number on their bottom border. I bought this already framed and haven't had the courage to look to see if there is a number. I'll let my kids worry about it when I'm gone. Getting back to unframed posters, I did get the '62 Post poster from the same Net54er. Unfortunately it is sitting in a box waiting to be framed which won't happen until I can find more wall space. I'd like to move the Rawlings ad and put the Post ad next to the Jell-O ad. And I have the Yoo-Hoo poster that I also need to get framed (in a shadow box frame because of the faux frame on the poster). That would look great on the other side of the Jell-O ad.
Brian, I haven't seen the new Mantle card you're talking about. I have my eBay Mantle search set up to exclude anything after 1970. I'll have to take a look at it at some point. |
Quote:
Where is the number supposed to be on the advertisement? I don’t think I have one on mine but I can check—all I have is the portrait side of the advertisement, but I know mine is real—the colors are spot on, I can’t imagine someone would have faked it and then cut it in half, and it’s autographed. |

Shoot me a message with your address if you are collecting the 2021 set. I ended up with an extra 1952 Topps (and may end up with 1 or 2 others), that I am happy to send you. |
Will do, Chris. Thank you, my friend.
While I did not collect this beautiful set, I immediately zeroed in on the reprint of the 1963 Topps Dice Game Mick. It's a honey and a half. I love it so much. Remember the 5 new to the hobby Dice Game cards that were submitted to Mile High or Memory Lane Auctions a few years ago? Recall the Dick Groat had his hat reconstructed to be a St. Louis Cardinal, with his team designation as St. Louis Cardinals. In November, 1962, Dick was sent to the Cards. Also, the Norm Sieburn card shows him with an A's uniform not used until 1962. It was Topps expert Keith Olbermann that brought this revelation to the hobby at the time. So, the Dice Game year is 1963. Nothing earth-shattering, but how long it will take the hobby, and Topps, to call the year correctly remains to be seen. PROBLABLY GLACIER-SPEED!) Same with my proving in NEVER CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN the Home Run Derby set was issued in 1960, not 1959, due to Rocky Colavito's card showing a team designation as Detroit Tigers, to whom the Rock was traded in mid-April, 1960. Enough of my palabre. Take care, friend. All the best to your wife and family. ---Brian Powell |
As usual, very cool stuff Mike! You show me the other items I need to pickup to frame :)
I bought a few of the 2021 X Mantle boxes too. Fun to open since I have not opened any new stuff in a few years. I pulled a low numbered standup reprint card. Would have been way cooler if you could actually make the Mick stand up! |

I went through my old emails and see that the the ID number on the Jell-O poster is "next to the bottom left corner of the Mantle photo." So I suppose that puts it near the center. |

I am the fellow who told Mike about the numbers on the Jello Mantle display piece. I won one from Heritage and asked if the numbers were there . It had been framed so they could not see it. They promised if I won it they would take it out of the frame to check. When they did it was not there so I did not buy it. You can see the location ( although very small now) in this REA listing when you enlarge the photo by clicking it a few times to see the largest blow up: https://robertedwardauctions.com/auc.../#&gid=1&pid=1 It used to be able to be magnified more than you can now. But if you look under the "G" in Gelatin you will see what I recall says "Litho Made in USA" or something close to that. Then under the "T" in Dessert close to the photo you can see the small numbers Post/Jello put on all their display items. But as I say the numbers are too small to see now. These should be on any original Jello Mantle display piece. This should help you IDing the one you have. |

Tho i have questions?????? I noticed on the 51B it doesnt have the 70 logo on it and the 53B as well. I totally was impressed getting both the 51& 52 and also the dice game. |
Hey, Chris. That's a mighty nice array of those 2021 Topps X Mickey Mantle cards you have there! So glad you pulled the Dice Game; that baby is such a beauty. For such a mysterious and alluring card that's as rare as rare can be, wasn't it nice of Topps to allow us Mantle collectors the privilege of owning a genuine well-done reprint?
My guess as to the absence of the 70 logo on the two Bowmans is because Topps did not own Bowman at the time. Cheers. --- Brian Powell |
Big fan of that Rawlings poster-- cool piece. Been hard to find any nice Mick cards lately; seems they're locked away in collections these days and things have dried up quite a bit.
I've been playing around on this app on my laptop creating collages of cards and this one is my favorite. Figured any Mantle guys would dig it. The pop data on these signed vintage Micks continues to amaze me, for example around 8200 unsigned 1959s in the PSA pop report versus only 24 signed. Only 19 signed 1952 Bowmans out there, etc. And then when they surface, you gotta hope the auto isn't faded and is in a good place, and that the card is just not 90/10 OC. The 51 and 52T signed have sailed way out of range for me, but I hope to one day track down nice dual-signed copies of the multi-star Mantles, with Aaron, Berra, and Mays. I think they're out there...somewhere LOL. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...75b766c6_c.jpg |

Beautiful collection. :) |
Recently picked up a 63 Mantle, from a member on here (thank you, Anthony) I've been searching for the "right" one for a while, I think this fits the bill for now. Presents very nicely, and gets me a little closer to my goal. I'm now only missing the 51 Bowman, 65 Topps, 67 Topps and a 69 Topps, in my journey to get a Mantle from every year from his career. I do eventually want to add a 52 and 53 Topps to my collection. The latter is more realistic than the former. With the former, I'm going to have to wait until retirement, as teaching unfortunately does not pay nearly enough for me to afford a 52 Mantle at the moment!
Those signed Mantles, are a beauty. Love seeing those. |

Bowling Alley Lighter

Just picked up but has not arrived yet. A Mantle Dallas Bowling Alley Rolex Lighter. I will be finding a new home for it once it arrives.
Anyone else have one? |
Nothing huge, but I'm stoked to add this to my small/rebuilding collection.
Thanks to fellow board member Lucas. :) I don't see any "major issues", and the centering is as good as I will ever need in my own PC. (I still have a PSA 8 of this same issue that looks amazing, but I liked the price and wanted to add another) I will likely send this to SGC along with a few others very soon. https://i.imgur.com/3K8fbZ3.jpg :) |

Mantle glove and box
6 Attachment(s)
Hi gang:
Just picked up this Mantle glove and box. Trying to find out info on year it was released etc. So far I have learned the glove, model MM9 was issued over many years in a few different boxes. Any info you can provide appreciated |
My father, in his recent travels has stumbled across a few nice Mick-related oddball type pieces.
I figured you all might like to see these......especially those amongst us that haven't seen these yet. (I hadn't ever seen 2 of these items until a couple days ago) None of it is "expensive", but if you haven't seen either of these items before, then they might be of interest. https://i.imgur.com/AxewamV.jpg MICKEY MANTLE "His Final Inning" - This is actually a fold out pamphlet, not a card. These were apparently printed in 1998 for the "American Tract Society", and they were reprinted again in 2012 for "Good News Tracts". This is basically several pages long, and it gives a brief look over Mantle's career. After a few stats it briefly goes over the length of his career and finally ends with Mantle turning to God/becoming a Christian with the help of longtime friend Bobby Richardson. It is worth a read, even if you aren't overly religious. These are widely available too, and you can find them on Ebay around the clock for less than $10. The gold colored card at the bottom of this picture is a die cut 1997 Scoreboard Mickey Mantle Collection. The back of the card reads "For Promotional Use Only". It lists his career '51-'68, and the date he was inducted into the HOF. The final piece is the most interesting. It is basically a die-cut oversized card, from the same 1997 Scoreboard GOLD Mickey Mantle. Its celebrating the 30th anniversary of his 500th career home run. Like most newer products, this is indeed NUMBERED......... 5784/7000, It can also be found on Ebay, and these go from $10 - $50. Nothing Earth-shattering here, but I'd never seen a couple of these cards. Plus my Father snagged them for me gives them some sentimental value. The Mantle "super collectors" might want to check out the "30th anniversary of his 500th home run" card.....if they haven't seen it already It might not be of tremendous value, but it looks great~! :) |
1953-55 Dormand Mickey Mantle Postcard
Been a little while since I`ve added anything to this, one of my favorite, threads. Picked up this early Mantle piece from our own B S T section, thanks Craig for such a smooth transaction Sir. Postcard is HUGE, 9 X 12 inches and in nice shape. Always on the lookout for affordable Mantle items and this fit my collection to a tee.
